The Episcopal Diocese of Southwestern Virginia Connections linking diocesan leaders Vol. 13, issue 11 November 2013 Around the Diocese and Beyond Mission Action Plan. This will be taking place during the upcoming months, as will a revamping of diocesan communications. The fall convocation meetings served as the place to discuss the needs and opportunities of the upcoming year, as required by the diocesan canons. These conversations will fuel further discussion as Executive Board Parish representatives wave at the Abingdon Convocation meeting, members begin to craft a proposed held at St. Thomas Episcopal Church in Abingdon. budget for 2014. Rev. Mark Bourlakas Sixth Bishop Below is my cover letter that will accompany the annual appeal to each congregation for its 2014 gift to our diocesan mission. My prayer is that this time of fall stewardship will begin a renewed commitment to our Christian discipleship of responding to each other and the neighbors who surround our churches. “Thou that hast given so much to me give me one thing more, a grateful heart: not thankful when it pleaseth me, as if Thy blessings had spare days, but such a heart whose pulse may be Thy praise.” – George Herbert Dear Sisters and Brothers: In this fall season of giving, I recall George Herbert’s beautiful prayer that focuses on the heart of our Christian discipleship. Herbert prays for God to give him the kind of grateful heart that will not simply offer thanksgiving when he received something exceptionally pleasing, as if God only portioned out a specified number of blessings for each of us, but rather a heart that pulses with praise for blessings large and small. Our giving must strive to reach beyond notions of obligation and transaction: “I should give to my parish to keep the lights on.” “We should give to the diocese so they can keep the lights on at Evans House.” These are not responses of gratitude. These are grudging responses of obligation combined with the cynical consumer perception that we get what we pay for . maybe. On a recent Sunday Luke told us about Jesus’ healing of ten lepers. The remarkable detail is that only one of those healed returns to give thanks to Jesus. His heart is grateful. The other nine people are narrowly focused on their own selfish needs and do not see the need to return and praise the source of their blessing. Our individual giving and the annual sharing of our parish’s blessings with the larger diocesan community should spring from the place of gratitude. Gratitude should shape our common life as we begin a new season of mission and ministry in this diocese. I am now working with our diocesan leadership to develop a Mission Action Plan that will realign our ministries and resources in order that we might be prepared to listen for where God’s Holy Spirit may be leading us. This is a blessed diocese. We have much to give, to each other and to the world around us. George Herbert was right. God’s blessings do not have spare days. They are new every morning.
