374 BAPTISTS, BISHOPS AND THE SACERDOTAL MINISTRY As a Baptist who before my ordination frequently presided at the Lord's Table - and on one occasion in the presence of no less than four Anglican priests (one of whom is now secretary to the Board of Mission and Unity) - I am by no means a l,ikely advocate of a fully sacerdotal ministry. Nevertheless, my view of ministry is what I would call a "high" view, which, combined with my in terest in symbol, ritual and liturgy has led some to label me a "Bapto-Catholic". I pray, however, that my view of ministry is not "high" because of personal pride in my own office, but out of humble recognition that despite my unworthiness, Christ has seen fit to call me and equip me as a Minister of Word and Sacra ment. I believe, moreover, that my "high" view of the ministry is consistent with,much of Baptist history. Indeed, the Baptist Statement of 1948 declared that "Baptists have had from the be ginning an exalted concept of the office of the christian minis- :' ter".l I will even go so far as to say (being in a provocative mood) that episcopacy - that highest of all concepts of ministry - also has a place in Baptist tradition. I will begin my defence where all good Baptists begin, with the Bible, by examining briefly the Biblical basis of episcope. In I Peter 2.25, Christ himself is described as the episcopos of our souis (translated as "guardian" in the R.S.V.). He is the Over-seer of the Church, His Body, of which He is the Head. -

Resolution 2 That, having regard to the conditions under which intercommunion between members of the Church passing from one distant diocese to another may be duly maintained, we hereby declare it desirable: 1. That forms of letters commendatory on behalf of clergymen visiting other dioceses be drawn up and agreed upon. 2. That a forms of letters commendatory for lay members of the Church be in like manner prepared. 3. That His Grace the Lord Archbishop of Canterbury be pleased to undertake the preparation of such forms. Resolution 3 That a committee be appointed to draw up a pastoral address to all members of the Church of Christ in communion with the Anglican branch of the Church Catholic, to be agreed upon by the assembled bishops, and to be published as soon as possible after the last sitting of the Conference. Resolution 4 That, in the opinion of this Conference, unity in faith and discipline will be best maintained among the several branches of the Anglican Communion by due and canonical subordination of the synods of the several branches to the higher authority of a synod or synods above them. -

Frederick Dennison MAURICE: Still a prophetic voice today? A paper for St Aidan’s Fellowship, November 2010 By Derek Pratt I. Introduction If you are a regular Facebook user you will know that down the right hand side of the home page there are frequent advertisements for things such as how to flatten ones belly or quizzes to help understand ones self-development. Last year I answered a set of questions which then informed me that I would best fit into a Dominican monastery were I to a become a religious. A few weeks ago I found a quiz, which promised to tell me which Anglican theologian I was. After answering a set of ten questions it informed me that F. D. Maurice was the Anglican theologian I was closest to. My report stated: You are fully convinced that the Scriptures and the Fathers are important to Anglican life and witness. However, social justice is important to you, too - and social justice tends towards some sort of non-revolutionary socialism, and towards an emphasis upon education. Liturgy is at the Church's heart, and both it and the calendar ought to be taken more seriously. Taking these seriously, however, means neither detracting from them nor adding to them. Thus, you have a traditional but not excessively high view of aesthetics. The Gospel is about Christ, and Christ is about grace - perhaps even for all. Therefore, you believe, theology should begin with the Incarnation. Bishops are the successors of the apostles, but you like to remind your friends that the Church is also embedded within a larger political community whose stability it must help to secure. -

THE ORDER OF THE HOLY CROSS ORDO 2020 Holy Cross Monastery Edition West Park, NY The Ordo of the Order of the Holy Cross is the official calendar of feasts and fasts observed in our community along with their rank or degree of solemnity. This Ordo follows the calendar authorized by the Chapter of the Order in 2017. It may be used with The Monastic Breviary in either its 1976 or revised forms, with the service books published by the Camaldolese Benedictines, or with any other authorized form of the daily office. Observances listed as First Class feasts begin with First Vespers on the preceding evening and generally take precedence over all other observances. Second Class feasts do not have a First Vespers; their Vespers take precedence over the Saturday Vespers preceding an ordinary Sunday. Third Class feasts are observed with their own office, elements of which are taken either from the Proper or the Common of Saints in the service books used. Fourth Class feasts, also called Optional Commemorations, do not have their own office but may be commemorated at Matins [or Vigils and Lauds] and Vespers or observed at the Eucharist of the day or both. A table of such commemorations recently observed in our Order can be found at the end of this booklet. Local communities or households will need to determine if and how they wish to observe them. In this Ordo, First and Second Class feasts that are impeded are transferred to the next day of lesser rank. Local communities or households may choose to transfer them to some other available day in the week that follows their assigned date. -

A Primer on the government of The Episcopal Church and its underlying theology offered by the Ecclesiology Committee of the House of Bishops Fall 2013 The following is an introduction to how and why The Episcopal Church came to be, beginning in the United States of America, and how it seeks to continue in “the faith once delivered to the saints” (Jude 3). Rooted in the original expansion of the Christian faith, the Church developed a distinctive character in England, and further adapted that way of being Church for a new context in America after the Revolution. The Episcopal Church has long since grown beyond the borders of the United States, with dioceses in Colombia, the Dominican Republic, Ecuador (Central and Litoral), Haiti, Honduras, Micronesia, Puerto Rico, Taiwan, Venezuela and Curacao, and the Virgin Islands, along with a Convocation of churches in six countries in Europe. In all these places, Episcopalians have adapted for their local contexts the special heritage and mission passed down through the centuries in this particular part of the Body of Christ. “Ecclesiology,” the study of the Church in the light of the self-revelation of God in Jesus Christ, is the Church’s thinking and speaking about itself. It involves reflection upon several sources: New Testament images of the Church (of which there are several dozen); the history of the Church in general and that of particular branches within it; various creeds and confessional formulations; the structure of authority; the witness of saints; and the thoughts of theologians. Our understanding of the Church’s identity and purpose invariably intersects with and influences to a large extent how we speak about God, Christ, the Spirit, and ourselves in God’s work of redemption. -

The Sources and Structures of Authority in the Church by J. Robert Wright An Anglican paper for the second Anglican/Oriental Orthodox Forum at the Monastery of St. Bishoy, Wadi El Natrun, near Cairo, Egypt, March 12-18, 1990. VER THE PAST SEVERAL centuries of the history of Christianity in the West, there have been three major Christian Oanswers to the question of “authority,” all of which have had some following within the Anglican tradition as it has sought the proper and appropriate source in which Christian authority may be grounded. The first approach has been to locate authority within the Holy Scripture, as if the truth contained therein were univocally obvious to anyone who reads it. A second approach has been to find the source of authority within the individual testimony of the Holy Spirit as perceived by each true believer in prayer, who is in this way supposedly enabled by private guidance to distinguish among contradictory interpretations. And a third approach has resorted to the calm certainty afforded by the institutional church, which is thought by those who follow it to offer a collective wisdom that is presumably more objective. Variations on each of these approaches have been numerous, and the one most commonly cited as “Anglican” is most frequently labeled by the triad of scripture, tradition, and reason. The major discussion of authority in the reports to the Lambeth Conference of 1988 is based on it (pp. 99-105). In the Anglican use of this triad, holy scripture is generally understood as the fundamental source of Christian revelation, the new testament complementing and completing the old, then tradition as the gradual unfolding of the scriptural truth throughout the pages of history, and finally reason (including experience) as the most satisfactory way in which the former two sources can be appropriately evaluated and measured. -
Anglican Principles for Liturgical Revision
ATR/92:3 Expressing What Christians Believe: Anglican Principles for Liturgical Revision J. Barrington Bates* What principles have guided liturgical revision in the Anglican Communion? This essay attempts to address that question for each of four historical periods, as well as offer suggestions for fu- ture revision. The author asserts that we cannot simply forge ahead with more experimental texts and trial liturgies if we truly endeavor both to value the inherited tradition and to move where the Spirit is leading us. By working toward a shared understand- ing of principles for liturgical revision, the Episcopal Church and other entities in the Anglican Communion can potentially avoid fractious conflict, produce better quality liturgical texts, and foster confidence that we are following divine guidance. “Liturgy expresses what Christians believe. To change the liturgy therefore runs the risk of changing doctrine—or at least those doctrines which worshippers regularly hear and absorb and which become part of their Christian identity.”1 Since the formal establishment of a separate identity for the Church of England from that of Rome in the sixteenth century, the various church entities that now form the Anglican Communion have made numerous revisions to their liturgy. What principles have guided these efforts? This essay attempts to address that question for each of four historical periods: (1) the reforms of the sixteenth cen- tury, focusing on the claims made by Thomas Cranmer and Richard * J.
