Introduction Blurb Flourish is a new set of exclusive ornament fonts included within Blurb Bookwright. They contain custom-designed book ornaments used to embellish your book pages with classic publishing motifs. As they are both font and function, please use our keyboard guide to identify which keystrokes to use to display the selected Table of Contents ornaments.

Within Blurb BookWright you can use the ornaments however you please. As with any Keyboard Guide font, you can change the color and font size in the text editor. Refer to the ornament Sample Ornament Usage usage page to understand how these elements are typically used in book layout. Ornament Fonts There are nine Blurb Flourish ornament fonts which are designed to work together cohesively to style your novel. For each font, there is a corresponding 6x9 inch Trade Book starter template which contains the ornaments already properly placed as Fleur Di Lis, Fleuron, Spike master elements, front matter, and chapter opening pages. These 6”x9” templates are designed in greyscale, as you may choose to print your Novel Starter Templates Guide book in black & white only. Preparing your content Planning, preparing and organizing your book content is the first step in producing your novel.

RTF DOCUMENT PREPARATION In order to import your text into BookWright’s flowing text containers, you will need to use Microsoft Word or similar text editor to output .RTF (Rich Text Format) documents.

It is recommended that your full novel is output as multiple, manageable chapters, or in whatever the natural segmentation of your work is. Follow these steps to prepare your chapters for BookWright import:

1. Copy and paste a singular chapter into a new Word document.

2. Change your font to either Times or Helvetica as a placeholder font, set it to 10 pt., full-justified, with paragraph line-spacing of 1.5. Set the paragraph indents to .25”.

3. Save the file as Rich Text Format (.rtf). Repeat these steps until all chapters (and any other sections of text) are completed.

GRAPHIC PREPARATION Any graphic files you plan on including in your book—photos, illustrations, and artwork of any kind—should be saved as either .jpeg or .png file format.

PRINT OR EBOOK? OR BOTH. First, you must determine if you are creating an 6x9 inch printed novel and/or an ebook. If you plan to make an ebook you will need to choose from BookWright’s licensed ebook fonts. Even if you are not immediately planning an ebook, it’s a good idea to use these fonts in the event you choose to output an ebook in the future. All the Blurb Flourish templates composed of only ebook licensed fonts.

This guide provides direction to first develop a printed or fixed-format .epub ebook, followed by instructions to alsocreate a reflowable .mobi ebook.

BookWright Layout

IMPORT RTF FILES Launch the chosen 6x9 inch template in BookWright—if this is your first time using BookWright it may be useful to refer to the User Guide to get a general understanding of the tool interface. It is important to first import all of your .rtf files into BookWright at the same time, however you should style each import and style chapter, one after another, until complete.

1. Click on the Text Files icon in the main toolbar at the top of the BookWright interface.

2. Next, click on the Add Text icon to navigate to the location of your .rtf formatted files. Select the files you wish to import. The .rtf files will appear to the right of the add text icon. flourish Starter Template Instruction Guide

3. Click on the page spread where your first chapter will begin—this is the 7th page in the template.

4. Hover your cursor over the chapter start text container, this is a reflowable text container that you will flow your .rtf files into. Locate your .rtf text icon and click and drag it over the chapter start text container, release to replace placeholder text.

5. Click on text container, select all the text, and change your font. Click on “Update text flow”.

ADDING ADDITIONAL TEXT CONTAINERS

Depending on the length of the imported text, you may need to add additional pages with text containers to complete the placement of the .rtf file. To determine this, go to the page that contains the end of the imported text. If there is a yellow warning icon in the upper right-hand corner of the container, this warning may indicate that there is more copy which needs to be displayed on additional pages. Complete the following steps to accomplish this:

1. Click on the Layouts icon in the main toolbar at the top of the BookWright interface.

2. Next, click on the Layouts pop-up menu and select Novel Layouts to display the layout options.

3. Drag the second layout, MS Word Moderate, on to the page spread that follows the page with the text container with the yellow warning icon. You will now have an empty text container adjacent to the incomplete text container. (MS Word Moderate is used in all of the templates)

LINKING FLOWING TEXT CONTAINERS

1. Hover over the incomplete text container to see the text flow icon in the lower right corner.

2. Click on the text flow icon in the first container, then click anywhere in the second container—the text will flow into it automatically.

3. Repeat this process of adding text containers and linking them until the yellow warning icon no longer appears, indicating that your entire chapter has been imported. flourish Starter Template Instruction Guide

CHAPTER OPENING STYLING

1. Click on the spread where your first chapter begins—template pages 6/7 in the page spread panel.

2. The left-hand page (6) contains instructions and formated elements which you will copy and paste into your chapter text container.

3. Click on the 6th page text container labeled “Formatting Chapters,” this will open the text editor panel at the bottom of the BookWright interface. Select the block of copy: Chapter Title - Chapter One -

4. Click on the text container on the page to the right, where your chapter begins; this will again open the text editor. Position your cursor at the top of the text editor and select paste, this will place the formatted chapter opening into your chapter text container.

5. While still in the text editor, select the block of copy just pasted, and select the Text Centered COPY PASTE icon, to ensure the chapter information is centered, while the rest of the chapter remains full-justified.

6. To set the chapter title text, select the full “Chapter Title” text and simply type in the name of your chapter. You can repeat the process with the chapter number; options include “Chapter One”, “One” “Chapter 1,” or “1.”

7. The last step in stylizing the chapter opening is to adjust the top of the text container to approximately 1/3 of the way down on the page, using the top container handle and dragging it down. This is standard book formatting convention which you should follow.

ADDING PARAGRAPH BREAKS AND THE CHAPTER END ORNAMENT

Follow the steps above to copy and paste the paragraph break and chapter end ornament throughout and at the end of the chapter.

COMPLETE ALL CHAPTERS

1. To begin a new chapter, drag the next chapter .rtf icon to the next empty right-hand page following your completed chapter. This will prompt you to select from the novel layout icons which will automatically flow your entire .rtf file into as many pages needed.

2. Repeat the steps to stylize the chapter opening and add paragraph breaks and chapter ends.

3. Continue to repeat these steps until all chapters have been imported and stylized.

4. Finally you must delete the instructions container on the 6th page otherwise it will print. flourish Starter Template Instruction Guide

FRONT MATTER STYLING

The first 5 pages of the template are called the front matter, they are publishing standard pages consisting of the half title page, the full title page, copyright, and dedication pages. You may have other pages to include in the front of your book, if so add new pages and create your pages with BookWright’s tools.

Follow the instructions below to edit the 5 front matter pages specifically for your book.

1. Half Title Page - Click on page 1 the page spreads panel, click on the text container to open the text editor. Select the Book Title copy and type in the name of your book, and then select the Author Name and type in the name of the author. Note: Make use of the ornamental ampersand in the flourish font!

2. Page 2 - the second page of a book never contains content, leave the decorative pattern that fills the page.

3. Full Title Page - Click on page 3 the page spreads panel, and repeat the steps to enter the book title and author name. Experiment with the font sizes and spacing between the ornamental dividers.

4. Copyright Page - Click on page 4, the page spreads panel and update the copyright year and replace the book title and author name. You must insert your own legalese—the template copy is placeholder—however it should remain in the lower-left corner.

5. Dedication Page - Click on page 5, the page spreads panel, and insert your dedication, this can be in any format you prefer, and the text container may be placed anywhere on the page.

6. Page 6 the sixth page, should only contain the full-page pattern, and page 7 is the start of chapter 1, which is always on the right-hand page.

EDITING BACKGROUND ELEMENTS

The Background layer contains master elements which appear on every page of your book. The book title, authors name and page number have already been placed and stylize in the starter template —you only need to edit the content. Just follow these steps:

1. Click on the Background icon in the main toolbar at the top of the BookWright interface.

2. Your main page editing area will be replaced with a spread that contains only master elements, which include the Author Name and Book Title. Using the same process that was used to update the title pages, click on the text containers and enter your book and author names.

3. Adjust your page numbers (if necessary) - are set up to begin on the first page on chapter one, which is industry standard. However, if you add or delete front matter pages, you will need to adjust the start of page number 1, by using Add Page Numbers under the Add/Insert menu so it aligns with the first page of your first chapter. flourish Starter Template Instruction Guide

FRONT AND BACK COVERS

The final step in completing this starter template is to create your front and back covers. First you need to determine which book format you want to order—Hardcover Dust Jacket, Hardcover ImageWrap, and/or Softcover, and whether you want to order an ebook. Follow these steps to finalize your covers:

1. Click on the Covers icon in the main toolbar at the top left of the BookWright interface.

2. Below the icon, the Covers panel will appear, allowing you to edit the covers in the formats of your choice. Click on the format you want to edit.

3. Click on the Photos icon in the main toolbar at the top of the BookWright interface.

4. Next, click on the Add Photo icon to navigate to the location of the image file you would like to use on your cover. Select the file you wish to import. The image files will appear to the right of the add photo icon.

5. Drag the image file thumbnail to replace the placeholder image on the cover. Click on image to trigger the image-editing dialog to zoom or pan your image placement.

6. Click on the text containers to edit the book title and author name. You can also change the font size and color since all covers print in color. You can also edit the Blurb Flourish ornaments just like any font, experiment with changing the size and color.

7. When your front cover is complete, click on the back cover and edit the text fields to your satisfaction. Remember this is just a starter layout, you can customize your covers, or any area of your book to your liking using the wealth of BookWright’s editing tools. flourish Starter Template Instruction Guide

Review and Order your book

PREVIEW AND REVIEW Before you place your book order, you will need to make sure your book is perfect. Just follow the following steps to ensure your book is ready to upload for printing.

1. Click on the Preview icon in the main toolbar at the top right of the BookWright interface.

2. The Preview Panel will launch allowing you to page through your entire book to preview.

3. After a full preview of your book, click the Back to Book button to return to editing mode.

4. Make any edits to your pages based on your preview.

5. Click on the Review icon in the main toolbar at the top right of the BookWright interface.

6. The Review Panel will launch indicating pre-print warnings that you are advised to fix, however you can choose to ignore them. Frequent warnings include low-resolution images and text overflow issues, you can either choose Fix or Ignore in the warning dialog.

UPLOAD AND ORDER YOUR BOOK

1. Click on the Upload icon in the main toolbar at the top of the BookWright interface.

2. Confirm that your order is correct, check the cover and paper type, quantities, and endsheet—click Add to Cart.

3. After a final confirmation of your shopping cart—click Checkout.

4. Complete delivery and shipping information—click Continue.

5. Complete your payment information—click Place Order.

Note: The book is ready to order in print and as a fixed-layout ebook. There are a few steps you need to take to prepare it as a reflowable ebook. There are instuctions on the following page. flourish Starter Template Instruction Guide

Reflowable ebook preparation

A reflowable ebook does not conform to fixed-layout layout, therefore it is important to make some edits to optimize the way your content flows in a ebook. Follow the instructions below after saving your file:

1. Delete empty pages - Any page that is blank or has unnecessary content on it should be deleted. For instance, you can delete pages 1 and 2 because they are redundant.

2. Delete background pattern - Overlapping elements are not supported in reflowable ebooks, therefore you must delete any background patterns used throughout the template.

3. Consolidate front matter content - Copy and paste your copyright and dedication copy into the title page text container, allowing it to flow in one compact, cohesive block of text. After completing this, you should delete pages which previously contained the copyright and dedication. Any additional front matter content should be also be included in the title text container.

4. Background elements - As there is no physical page in an ebook, there is no need for page numbers or headers/footers. In the template these are in the Background, and will not appear in your reflowable output, however if you did include any headers/footers or page numbers in your actual pages, you should delete these.

5. Upload and Order - Once completing these steps, select Order and follow the steps to order an ebook.
