English Turf Labyrinths Jeff Saward Turf labyrinths, or ‘turf mazes’ as they are popularly known in Britain, were once found throughout the British Isles (including a few examples in Wales, Scotland and Ireland), the old Germanic Empire (including modern Poland and the Czech Republic), Denmark (if the frequently encountered Trojaborg place-names are a reliable indicator) and southern Sweden. They are formed by cutting away the ground surface to leave turf ridges and shallow trenches, the convoluted pattern of which produces a single pathway, which leads to the centre of the design. Most were between 30 and 60 feet (9-18 metres) in diameter and usually circular, although square and other polygonal examples are known. The designs employed are a curious mixture of ancient classical types, found throughout the region, and the medieval types, found principally in England. Folklore and the scant contemporary records that survive suggest that they were once a popular feature of village fairs and other festivities. Many are found on village greens or commons, often near churches, but sometimes they are sited on hilltops and at other remote locations. By nature of their living medium, they soon become overgrown and lost if regular repair and re-cutting is not carried out, and in many towns and villages this was performed at regular intervals, often in connection with fairs or religious festivals. 50 or so examples are documented, and several hundred sites have been postulated from place-name evidence, but only eleven historic examples survive – eight in England and three in Germany – although recent replicas of former examples, at nearby locations, have been created at Kaufbeuren in Germany (2002) and Comberton in England (2007) for example. -

Electronic Solutions to the Problems of Monograph Publishing By Anthony Watkinson Resource: The Council for Museums, Archives and Libraries 2001 Abstract Electronic Solutions to the Problems of Monograph Publishing examines the suggestion that the so-called monograph crisis can be overcome by making use of the possibilities of electronic publishing. Research monographs are the preferred way in which scholarship is communicated in most disciplines in the humanities and some in the social sciences. The problems faced by publishers influence the practices of the scholars themselves. This study examines the nature of the crisis in the print environment, the aspirations of scholarly publishers in the electronic environment and the attitudes of and impacts on other parts of the information chain. There is as yet little experience of electronic monographs, so the emphasis is on the projections of the various players and on the major experiments that are being funded. There is nevertheless consideration of the practical aspects of making content available in digital form. No immediate solution is presented but there are pointers to fruitful future developments. Anthony Watkinson is an independent consultant with three decades of experience in scholarly publishing. He was a pioneer in putting scholarly journals online. Syllabus for English 200: Introduction to Literature Section 001 Instructor: Billy Longino Semester: Spring 2015 email: [email protected] Location: Ferguson 181 Office: LAN 328 Time: MWF 10:00 – 10:50 Office Hours: M/W/F 9:00 – 10:00; Tues 1:30 – 3:30; or by appointment Course Description English 200: Introduction to Literature is an introductory level literature course designed with the goal to aid students, who may not be familiar or versed in the various genres of literature, in acquiring the skills necessary to engage, understand, critically analyze, and (hopefully!) enjoy the literary genres of the shorty story, poetry, the novel, drama, and the graphic novel. As they read a range of works belonging to these genres, students will explore the basic concepts of literary technique, narrative, poetic, and dramatic structures and innovations, and begin to engage with the more advanced cognitive aspects of literature. In addition to these theoretical skills, students will also read below the surface of the texts in this class for their historical, ethical, psychological, social, and philosophical value, developing insight in how literature gives us a window into both the experiences of others and wider appreciation for the human condition. In addition, through assignments in class (quizzes, exams, essays, and discussions) students will learn how to intelligently respond to the sometimes complicated concepts found in works of literature. The goal here is for students to be able to take skills of critical thought beyond engagement with literature only into their wider interactions with an increasingly complicated world, which of course will continue to be reflected in the human output of literary works. -

Rogan’s List 2019 Greetings WFU parents! Fond thanks to the many of you who recommended this book or that movie or the new restaurant in your home city. Keep ‘em coming! Parents who’ve seen this previously skip this graf, but if you’re new to this odd enterprise: three inspirations converged a dozen-plus years ago. As a still-singleton, felt a response was necessary to my expanding circle of married-with-kids friends’ annual Holiday Letters, tinged with a certain “here’s how life works”-ness. And I loved pal Drew Littman’s roundup of his fave movies/books of the year (Drew also originated the B game/A game you’ll see on next page). Third, I grew up with Roger Angell’s annual New Yorker rhyming ‘poem’ of boldface names, & added my own pale imitation after Angell stopped…then NYer’s Ian Frazier picked up the tradition. Shifted therefore to a ‘found poem’ of lines from songs by millennial/rising-generation musicians; this year’s is after the best-of music page below. Speaking of poems, a stanza from one long beloved, WS Merwin’s To the New Year: so this is the sound of you here and now whether or not anyone hears it this is where we have come with our age our knowledge such as it is and our hopes such as they are invisible before us untouched and still possible On to my favorites of 2019. To adapt a venerable Welsh saying, may the best artistic creations of the decade just ending be the worst of the next. -

Hate them. The text is dull and not well written. It’s the book form of candy, empty words without any redeeming intellectual value. There are probably books in your children’s lives that are the same way. Why not feed their little brains with good literature instead of junk books? Just like I limit the junk food in Grace’s belly, I limit the junk books in her brain. I’ll loosen up a little when she’s old enough to read her own books, but as long as I’m doing the reading, we are reading the good stuff. If I am going to take the time to read to Gracie (and I do, every single day), I want to hear her a book that is stimulating. I want a story that draws me in and makes me want to read just one more chapter! I want it to expand what Gracie knows – either in experiences or feelings or understanding of the world. I want a story with layers – something she may come back to again as an older kid or even an adult. There is no junk food here. (There’s also no junk food on my list of 101 Picture Books to Read or Hear Before You Grow Up. ) I’ve read almost every one of these books, either in my own childhood or recently. -
