As the executive agent for the Ministry of Defence (MINDEF), DSTA's roles and functions are to:

• Acquire defence and systems

• Manage complex programmes, including systems design and integration

• Manage the development of IT and communications systems

• Manage defence research and development

• Develop defence facilities

• Provide engineering support and defence-related services

• Advise MINDEF on all defence science and technology matters

• Implement defence technology policies and plans

• Promote and facilitate defence science and technology development in Singapore

Another key player in the defence industry is Singapore Technologies Kinetics (ST Kinetics). BIONIX Infantry Fighting Vehicle – 1997

Built on a modular system concept, the BIONIX has tremendous growth potential to be adapted with various weapon configurations for command, recovery and support roles amongst others. For its role, ST Kinetics became the first company in the local defence industry to win the coveted Defence Technology Prize awarded by MINDEF for the design and development of the BIONIX Infantry Fighting Vehicle.

BRONCO All Terrain Tracked Carrier - 2000

The BRONCO was unveiled as Singapore 's first all terrain, multi-purpose articulated tracked carrier that could augment the Army's mechanised force. The Defence Technology Prize was again awarded to ST Kinetics for their work on the BRONCO. The award symbolised the continued close working relationship between ST Kinetics, DSTA and the SAF, and also recognised their contributions to the operational capability of the SAF.

SAR 21 – 2001

The SAR 21 ranks among the world's most advanced assault rifles. The SAR 21 was developed as a new generation rifle to meet the unique training and combat needs of the SAF, and is to replace the antiquated M-16 rifles currently in service.
