I-I I Manuscript received 20th August, 1964 ABSTRACT The Indo-West Pacific spider-crab genus Chlorinoides is redefined and a key is given to the 12 included species considered to be of good taxonomic standing. The type species, C. tenuirostris is shown to be congeneric with several species formerly placed in the genus Acanthophrys, which latter genus is now reduced to synonymy with Hyastenus White. The genus Prismatopus Ward is reduced to synonymy with Chlorinoides. INTRODUCTION Among the spider crabs of the family Majidae unique to the Indo-West Pacific are the assemblage of species which have been variously referred to the genera Acanthophrys and Chlorinoides. These small, delicate crabs, with a pyriform carapace set with long spines or flattened plates, or both, and long, slender ambulatory legs, are known from continental shelf depths from Hawaii to South Africa. -

Over 10,500 names are treated including 6,793 valid species and subspecies (with 1,907 primary synonyms), 1,271 genera and subgenera (with 393 primary synonyms), 93 families and 38 superfamilies. Nomenclatural and taxonomic problems are reviewed in detail, and many resolved. Detailed notes and references are provided where necessary. The constitution of a large number of families and superfamilies is discussed in detail, with the positions of some taxa rearranged in an attempt to form a stable base for future taxonomic studies. This is the first time the nomenclature of any large group of decapod crustaceans has been examined in such detail. BtSHOJ' MOSEtrM INTRODUCTION The following report on crustaceans selected from materia1lwhich has accumulated in Bishop Museum for several years inc1uder (1), new species, (2) known species as new Hawaiian records, an,(i (3) known species rarely recorded in the central Pacific. Recently, valuable collections have been received as a result of the current dredging operations of the M alliin, a boat of the Fi hand Game Division, Territorial Board of Agriculture and Forestry. These collections clearly reveal the presence of a crustacean fauna a ut the Hawaiian Islands. at depths of about 10 fathoms and beyond, which is not seen on the shallow reefs. Many of the unique species taken nearly 50 years ago by the Albatross of the United States Fis Com~ mission have again been brought to view. Other rare crustaceans recorded in the report were receive1 from the Honolulu Aquarium and came from fish traps operated b~ com mercial fishermen off the coast of Oahu at depths ranging aro~nd 16 fathoms. These specimens show that fauna at these depths har close affinities with that of the western Pacific and the Indian Ocej. It is well known that many organisms, both land and marine ~orrns, have been introduced into the Hawaiian area within recent I.years, chiefly as a result of war activities. Ocean-going craft returning to Hawaii from forward areas in the Pacific transport on theil' hulls marine organisms not previously recognized among local shore fauna, and some of these inunigrants become established in the new e9viron ment. -

E-mail: [email protected], [email protected] 4Corresponding author Abstract Decapod crustaceans were studied in the Marquesas Islands, French Polynesia, between 50–550 m by using a remotely operated vehicle (ROV) equipped with high resolution cameras and an articulated arm. Careful examination of videos and photographs combined with previous inventories made in the area with conventional gears allowed the identification of 30 species, including 20 species-level determinations. Species identified belong to shrimps (Penaeoidea, Stenopodidea, and Caridea), lobsters (Astacidea and Achelata), anomurans (Galatheoidea and Paguroidea), and brachyuran crabs (Dromioidea, Homolodromioidea, Raninoidea, Leucosioidea, Majoidea, Parthenopoidea, Portunoidea, and Trapezioidea). Most of these species were observed and photographed in situ for the first time. A discussion is given on the geographic distribution, density, ecology, and behavior. -

Goy, and Rafael Lemaitre The decapod crustaceans are primarily marine in terms of abundance and diversity, although they include a variety of well- known freshwater and even some semiterrestrial forms. Some species move between marine and freshwater environments, and large populations thrive in oligohaline estuaries of the Gulf of Mexico (GMx). Yet the group also ranges in abundance onto continental shelves, slopes, and even the deepest basin floors in this and other ocean envi- ronments. Especially diverse are the decapod crustacean assemblages of tropical shallow waters, including those of seagrass beds, shell or rubble substrates, and hard sub- strates such as coral reefs.
