Nomenclatural and taxonomic problems are reviewed in detail, and many resolved. Detailed notes and references are provided where necessary. The constitution of a large number of families and superfamilies is discussed in detail, with the positions of some taxa rearranged in an attempt to form a stable base for future taxonomic studies. This is the first time the nomenclature of any large group of decapod crustaceans has been examined in such detail. Nine genera and twenty-three species of gecarcinucid freshwater crabs are reported, including six new genera (Baratha, Lamella, Pilarta, Snaha, Vanni and Vela) and 10 new species (Baratha pushta, Baratha peena, Pilarta anuka, Snaha aruna, Travancoriana kuleera, Travancoriana charu, Vanni ashini, Vanni deepta, Vanni giri and Vela virupa). Four species previously regarded as junior subjective synonyms are recognised herein as valid species, namely, Lamella lamellifrons (Alcock), Vela pulvinata (Alcock), Vanni travancorica (Henderson) and Travancoriana convexa (Roux). Keys to the genera and species of southern Indian gecarcinucid freshwater crabs are provided. The new species is easily differentiated from its congeners by its first male pleopod (G1), which has a long, less strongly twisted terminal segment and distal portion of subterminal segment in addition to a setose hump on the outer margin of the non-twisted portion. Key to the species of the genus Spiralothelphusa Bott, 1968, is provided. Oziotelphusa ganjamensis n. sp. is easily differentiated from its congeners by a distinct first gonopod (G1) having terminal segment bent outwards, whose tip is upturned and pointed, and subterminal segment relatively broad in the basal half to two-third portion and then sharply narrows to appear slender in distal half to two-third portion. Introduction Oziotelphusa Müller, 1887, belongs to family Gecarcinucidae (Klaus et al., 2009). Taxonomical studies related to this genus are mainly those of Alcock (1910), Bott (1970), Ng & Tay (2001) and Bahir & Yeo (2005). Most of the Indian species are restricted in their distribution to the southern part (Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Kerala and Puducherry).

Vogan et al. [Dis. Aquat. Org. (2001)] have shown that the severity of shell disease in the edible crab, Cancer pagurus, correlates with an increase in haemocoelic bacterial infections and may therefore serve as an external marker for the internal health of the animal. Therefore, this present study examined if the same crabs with shell disease lesions and varying degrees of bacterial septicaemia also displayed differences in the haemogramme, haemolymph phenoloxidase activity, total protein, copper and urea, as well as haemolymph-derived antibacterial activity, compared to uninfected individuals. A strong correlation was found between the severity of shell disease and a reduction in serum protein, which was further indicative of haemocoelic infection. Levels of copper, urea, phenoloxidase, and antibacterial activity in the haemolymph showed no correlations with the proportion of exoskeletal lesion cover. However, the degree of melanisation of haemolymph samples taken from shell-diseased individuals was less than that seen in disease-free crabs. Total haemocyte counts were unaffected by the disease, although some minor changes were found in the differential counts. Overall, despite having intrahaemocoelic infections, shell disease-affected individuals displayed few changes in the cellular or humoral defence parameters examined.

The updated data comprises 62 crab species in 18 genera of the family Gecarcinucidae, including recognition of two new records from the Western Ghats: Oziotelphusa biloba and Oziotelphusa ravi. The Western Ghats crabs contribute nearly half the diversity of the Indian freshwater crabs and more than two-thirds the diversity of the Indian gecarcinucid crabs. Nearly two-thirds crab species of the Western Ghats have been reported during the last two decades. The Southern Western Ghats is relatively rich in crab diver- sity as compared to the Northern- and Central Western Ghats.

The result shows a strong response of haemolymph against the clinical pathogens which confirms the immune mechanism of the freshwater crab. A new species of gecarcinucid freshwater crab, Oziotelphusa naga sp. nov., is described herein from Nagercoil of Kanyakumari district in Tamil Nadu, India. The new species is distinct among the Indian congeners due to its stout and distinctly sinuous terminal segment of the male first gonopod. Among the Sri Lankan species of Oziotelphusa Müller, 1887, O. naga sp. nov. resembles O. minneriyaensis Bott, 1970, in the structure of the male gonopods but can easily be distinguished by the less convex dorsal surface of the carapace, the relatively more narrow frontal median triangle, and the relatively longer male second gonopod. Oziotelphusa is now rep- resented by 18 species: eight species from India and 10 from Sri Lanka. The distri- butional records of all the Indian species of Oziotelphusa are provided.
