  • Lesbian Brides: Post-Queer Popular Culture
Lesbian Brides: Post-Queer Popular Culture Dr Kate McNicholas Smith, Lancaster University Department of Sociology Bowland North Lancaster University Lancaster LA1 4YN [email protected] Professor Imogen Tyler, Lancaster University Department of Sociology Bowland North Lancaster University Lancaster LA1 4YN [email protected] Abstract The last decade has witnessed a proliferation of lesbian representations in European and North American popular culture, particularly within television drama and broader celebrity culture. The abundance of ‘positive’ and ‘ordinary’ representations of lesbians is widely celebrated as signifying progress in queer struggles for social equality. Yet, as this article details, the terms of the visibility extended to lesbians within popular culture often affirms ideals of hetero-patriarchal, white femininity. Focusing on the visual and narrative registers within which lesbian romances are mediated within television drama, this article examines the emergence of what we describe as ‘the lesbian normal’. Tracking the ways in which the lesbian normal is anchored in a longer history of “the normal gay” (Warner 2000), it argues that the lesbian normal is indicative of the emergence of a broader post-feminist and post-queer popular culture, in which feminist and queer struggles are imagined as completed and belonging to the past. Post-queer popular culture is depoliticising in its effects, diminishing the critical potential of feminist and queer politics, and silencing the actually existing conditions of inequality, prejudice and stigma that continue to shape lesbian lives. Keywords: Lesbian, Television, Queer, Post-feminist, Romance, Soap-Opera Lesbian Brides: Post-Queer Popular Culture Increasingly…. to have dignity gay people must be seen as normal (Michael Warner 2000, 52) I don't support gay marriage despite being a Conservative.

the Miss Julie Goodyear collection Personal jewellery sale in aid of Registered Charity No: 1029318 the Miss Julie Goodyear collection We are extremely honoured and grateful that Miss Julie Goodyear MBE has donated such a wonderful collection of her jewellery, both personal and as worn as the iconic brassy barmaid with a heart of gold, Bet Lynch. Willow Wood cares for the people of Tameside and Glossop who are living with a life-limiting diagnosis, and provides palliative and end-of-life care. With annual running costs of £2.8million (£7,650 every single day) and funding of less than 21% of that figure, we rely heavily on the generosity of our community. However, with our shops closed once again and most of the year's fundraising events cancelled, our income this year has dropped dramatically. We are hoping that this auction will bring in a substantial amount to enable us to continue our loving, specialised care for our patients and their families. The auction also includes lots from Julie Hesmondhalgh (Hayley Cropper) and the family of the late Roy Barraclough MBE (Alec Gilroy). We are so very grateful to them for their donations. Full details of all the lots in the eBay auction follow, and it will commence at 12 noon on Saturday 14 November 2020. Thank you for your support of Willow Wood. If you would like to find out more about us please go to www.willowwood.info. All lots in this category were donated by Miss Julie Goodyear MBE from her personal collection. Each lot comes with a certificate of authenticity signed by Miss Goodyear.

  • Miss Meccano
Miss Meccano In 2001 National Museums Liverpool held an exhibition, at the Museum of Liverpool Life and the Merseyside Maritime Museum, to celebrate one hundred years since the invention of Meccano. As part of the exhibition we put out a call for former employees to come in and be interviewed about their working lives at Meccano’s main factory in Binns Road, Liverpool. Many people responded and we have a wonderful set of interviews covering work in the factory from the 1930s up until closure in 1979. We spoke to people who worked on the production line, in the offices, as salesmen; we talked to people whose families had all worked at Meccano, who met their partners there and who loved their time spent at work with great friends and colleagues. One gentleman brought in a box of photographs related to the Miss Meccano competition. It was full of amazing images of the competitors and the judges, many of them local celebrities. We put a selection in the Liverpool Echo and asked for any former contestants to come forward. We were really lucky and several ladies got in touch, with others mentioning the competition in passing in their interviews. We think the competition ran for around twenty years and most commonly took place at the Grafton Rooms in West Derby Road. Carolann only worked at Meccano for a year but was persuaded by her supervisor to enter the competition. She recalls wearing a full-length halter neck dress and her long dark hair up in a ‘bubble fashion’ which was all the rage at the time.

  • Carltonware.Com News
carltonware.com news Issue 124 23 January 2007 Novelty Items In the later years Carlton Ware produced quite a number of what is known as Novelty Items!. These usually consisted of copies of everyday items and gimmicky pieces for fun. The most famous and popular is the Walking Ware series. We have written about this in previous issues of this newsletter. In this Shape 3291 - Ice Cream Wafer Butter newsletter we thought we would look at some less known novelty items. Although they were probably produced quite cheaply in abundance for a mass market. The first picture is of shape 3291 which is an Ice Cream Wafer Butter. This was first introduced in Back Stamp the late 1970’s. An interesting replica of an ice-cream and wafer. To complement the ice-cream butter dish Carlton Ware produced 3292, Milk Shake Preserves. Another novelty design is the Alligator Range. This included the following items listed under the shape or impressed number 3543: Teapot, Sugar, Cream, Eggcup, Toast rack, Butter dish, Preserve, Salt and Pepper. It’s obvious that many of the novelty designs were created as utilitarian ware to appeal to a wide audience. Shape 3354 is a very amusing Toastrack with a Bird and Worm - Shape 3543 - Alligator Teapot The early bird gets the worm! Each of the two birds have got a different end of the same worm - which one will succeed in winning the prize? Shape 3353 is a Beaker in this Early Bird range. The handle consists of a bird eating a worm. Two other shapes in the Early Bird range include 3352 Chicken Egg Cups and 3348 Egg Pepper & Salt.
