Career Development Module
Onwards & Upwards A Toolkit for Careers Advisors Working with Mature Students in Higher Education Onwards & Upwards A Toolkit for Careers Advisors Working with Mature Students in Higher Education Careers Service Cooperative Education & Careers Division University of Limerick www.ul.ie/careers Written by Patsy Ryan, Careers Advisor - University of Limerick April 2007 Onwards & Upwards Summary This toolkit serves as a framework for those working with adult learners who are planning to study at third level. It comprises two modules, Educational Guidance and Career Development, which highlight and examine the core aspects of educational and career preparation through a number of tutorials which include course and career investigation, grant applications, skills identification, CV and application form preparation, interview advice and overall self-awareness. Each tutorial comprises an introductory text and presentation slides, while others have assignments and additional materials to support tutorial activities. Both modules offer practical exercises, which enable students to relate to and customise the learning to meet their own needs. Students also gain the opportunity to give oral presentations and submit assignments and reports, activities that are typical of most educational and career paths today. The toolkit guides and advises tutors throughout all aspects of the modules, while allowing for flexibility in each tutorial given the diverse needs of all groups. Through regular feedback and updating, the toolkit continues as an invaluable aid in supporting adult learning. This report can be downloaded at: http://www.ul.ie/careers/careers/mature/toolkit.shtml. Summary Toolkit Overview iii Onwards & Upwards Acknowledgements Thanks to the students on the Mature Student Access Certificate Course at the University of Limerick who provided feedback on the modules for this toolkit and who were such a joy to work with. -

A Critical Study of Transsexual Transition in a Familial Context
1 Straddling the scalpel of identity: a critical study of transsexual transition in a familial context Claire Elizabeth Jenkins Doctor of Philosophy Sociological Studies December 2012 2 Acknowledgements Many have helped me. Firstly I would like to thank my immediate family, my ex-wife and my four children, for sharing in my transition which was the genesis of this research. I very much appreciate the invaluable help given by Dr Emily Gray in formulating my original research proposal. Perlin Dobson and David Jackson, my dear friends, have consistently supported me through transition to submission. David read many of my drafts and gave me critical feedback. Perlin gave emotional support when times were difficult. I am very appreciative of the invaluable advice and support given by Kevin Mahoney of Sheffield University Careers Service. These friends together with Nirmal Fernando, David Jones, Professor Stephen Whittle, Dr Roshan das Nair, Jayne Tulip and Imogen Hale were especially helpful when I experienced a major setback. They helped me to re-continue afterwards. I would also like to more formally thank my supervisors, Dr Victoria Robinson, Dr Lorna Warren and Professor Jenny Hockey, who taught me much about sociological writing and thought and who gave extensive critical feedback. Dr Warren has especially helped me regain academic confidence during 2012. I am also grateful for the informed critiques received from Professor Ruth McDonald, Professor Brendan Gough and David Miers. I am especially grateful to Brenda Stephenson and Dawn Montiel for the proof reading early drafts. I would also like to thank Duncan Macmillan House Staff Library and Nottingham Trent University Library Staff for supporting me locally through book acquisition, loans and for obtaining journal articles. -

Emotional Geographies of Everyday Life with Diabetes
”Are You High?”: Emotional Geographies of Everyday Life with Diabetes by Gentry Hanks Athesissubmittedtothe Department of Geography and Planning in conformity with the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy Queen’s University Kingston, Ontario, Canada September 2018 Copyright c Gentry Hanks, 2018 Abstract Geographies of everyday life intersect diabetes in interesting ways with emotional and physical consequences. How do those with diabetes seek and create spaces of freedom from these consequences in everyday life? Looking to archival materials and social media discourse, I use a geographical, feminist lens to argue that the diabetic body is a place, a site, for historical and current applications of biomedical technologies that have embodied, emotional consequences for lifeworlds of people with diabetes. Before the discovery of insulin, everyday life with diabetes consisted of persistent high blood glucose levels, starvation diets, calorie counting, hopelessness, diminished lifeworlds, and early death. Now, nearly a century later, for those with access, treatment of diabetes may include the use of an increasing number of pharmaceutical innovations and technological devices to quantify and manage life with diabetes. These pro- grammed/programmable devices are interfaced with human flesh, described as part of an individual’s body and identity, creating diabetic cyborgs. Those embodying these devices seek liberation from negative consequences by hacking them, meaning to use or program the devices in ways not intended or against medical advisement, in order to individualize improvements to the device’s function. Management of dia- betes produces personal biomedical waste from daily use of ‘disposable’ items. I use reddit data to show how some seek freedom from the burden of waste management, while others seek freedom from guilt within a framework of biocitizenship. -
Views with Girls, and a Research Blog That Explains My Project to My Research Subjects in Understandable Language
DISTINCTLY DIGITAL: Subjectivity and Recognition in Teenage Girls’ Online Self-Presentations DISSERTATION Presented in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree Doctor of Philosophy in the Graduate School of The Ohio State University By Adriane Brown Graduate Program in Women's Studies The Ohio State University 2011 Dissertation Committee: Mary Thomas, Advisor; Jill Bystydzienski; Linda Mizejewski; Julia Watso Copyright by Adriane Brown 2011 Abstract This dissertation examines the ways that teenage girls’ online interactions reflect their psychic and social struggles to negotiate contradictory and constricting discourses regarding contemporary American girlhood. Literature on girls’ online interactions has tended to fall into one of two categories. In the first, scholars sound alarms about the ubiquity of risk in digital spaces (for instance, on websites that supposedly promote eating disorders). In the second, scholars celebrate the ways that teenagers engage in social activism online. In contrast, I argue that emergent media scholarship often fails to question the messages of autonomous selfhood that characterize girls’ digital personas. I utilize feminist and psychoanalytic theories of subjectivity to suggest that girls’ voices and agencies are always embedded in normative ideals of gender, race, sexuality, and class. I examine a variety of digital spaces that cover a diverse range of contemporary American girlhoods, including queer girls’ MySpace pages, pro-bulimia message boards, and fan sites for young musicians such as Taylor Swift. I utilize a three-pronged methodology: analysis of the textual and visual elements of websites, instant messenger interviews with girls, and a research blog that explains my project to my research subjects in understandable language. -

Lesbian Brides: Post-Queer Popular Culture
Lesbian Brides: Post-Queer Popular Culture Dr Kate McNicholas Smith, Lancaster University Department of Sociology Bowland North Lancaster University Lancaster LA1 4YN [email protected] Professor Imogen Tyler, Lancaster University Department of Sociology Bowland North Lancaster University Lancaster LA1 4YN [email protected] Abstract The last decade has witnessed a proliferation of lesbian representations in European and North American popular culture, particularly within television drama and broader celebrity culture. The abundance of ‘positive’ and ‘ordinary’ representations of lesbians is widely celebrated as signifying progress in queer struggles for social equality. Yet, as this article details, the terms of the visibility extended to lesbians within popular culture often affirms ideals of hetero-patriarchal, white femininity. Focusing on the visual and narrative registers within which lesbian romances are mediated within television drama, this article examines the emergence of what we describe as ‘the lesbian normal’. Tracking the ways in which the lesbian normal is anchored in a longer history of “the normal gay” (Warner 2000), it argues that the lesbian normal is indicative of the emergence of a broader post-feminist and post-queer popular culture, in which feminist and queer struggles are imagined as completed and belonging to the past. Post-queer popular culture is depoliticising in its effects, diminishing the critical potential of feminist and queer politics, and silencing the actually existing conditions of inequality, prejudice and stigma that continue to shape lesbian lives. Keywords: Lesbian, Television, Queer, Post-feminist, Romance, Soap-Opera Lesbian Brides: Post-Queer Popular Culture Increasingly…. to have dignity gay people must be seen as normal (Michael Warner 2000, 52) I don't support gay marriage despite being a Conservative. -
