Views with Girls, and a Research Blog That Explains My Project to My Research Subjects in Understandable Language DISTINCTLY DIGITAL: Subjectivity and Recognition in Teenage Girls’ Online Self-Presentations DISSERTATION Presented in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree Doctor of Philosophy in the Graduate School of The Ohio State University By Adriane Brown Graduate Program in Women's Studies The Ohio State University 2011 Dissertation Committee: Mary Thomas, Advisor; Jill Bystydzienski; Linda Mizejewski; Julia Watso Copyright by Adriane Brown 2011 Abstract This dissertation examines the ways that teenage girls’ online interactions reflect their psychic and social struggles to negotiate contradictory and constricting discourses regarding contemporary American girlhood. Literature on girls’ online interactions has tended to fall into one of two categories. In the first, scholars sound alarms about the ubiquity of risk in digital spaces (for instance, on websites that supposedly promote eating disorders). In the second, scholars celebrate the ways that teenagers engage in social activism online. In contrast, I argue that emergent media scholarship often fails to question the messages of autonomous selfhood that characterize girls’ digital personas. I utilize feminist and psychoanalytic theories of subjectivity to suggest that girls’ voices and agencies are always embedded in normative ideals of gender, race, sexuality, and class. I examine a variety of digital spaces that cover a diverse range of contemporary American girlhoods, including queer girls’ MySpace pages, pro-bulimia message boards, and fan sites for young musicians such as Taylor Swift. I utilize a three-pronged methodology: analysis of the textual and visual elements of websites, instant messenger interviews with girls, and a research blog that explains my project to my research subjects in understandable language. Website analysis and interviews reveal that girls feel personally empowered by the ability to express themselves and demonstrate “who they really are” online in ways they cannot offline, but their digital personas are deeply embedded in discourses that privilege normative femininity, whiteness, heterosexuality, thinness, and middle-class status as conditions to aspire to. This ii research shows that despite girls’ proclamations about articulating independent selves online, their self-presentations are consciously and unconsciously motivated by a yearning for recognition by real and fantasy online audiences. Elucidating girls’ desire for recognition illustrates the limited range of possible subjectivities to girls under post-feminism and hegemonic white consumption ideals. My dissertation thus points to the inadequacy of media scholars’ reliance on teenage girls’ explicit statements about their intentions for their online personas, demonstrating the importance of a psychoanalytic perspective to reveal the ways that allusive and unspoken desires—especially the subject’s fundamental longing for recognition— underpin girls’ digital self-presentations. iii Dedication This dissertation is dedicated to my family. ivii Acknowledgments I would like to thank my advisor, Mary Thomas, for her tireless efforts in reading drafts, brainstorming ideas, and offering constant support.     Cartooning Across the Pond The Big Reuben Wrap Up! This past Memorial Day weekend the National Cartoonists Society, had its annual Reuben Awards Weekend in not-so-sunny San Diego, CA… well, we did see some sun on the final day of the festivities, but for most of it we experienced what native San Diegans call “May Gray”. That hardly got us down, however. The weekend was a lot of fun. They usually are, but this one seemed to be turned up a notch. Most of the events took place at the beautiful Omni hotel right at the start of the famous Gaslamp District. Friday, May 23rd The ball got rolling Friday with a terrific slate of guest speakers. As NCS president, I have many things I have to do and oversee throughout the weekend, so I rarely get to catch many of the speakers, but I did get to see the majority of the first three of the day who I thought were great, and I heard nothing but raves about the others: Eddie Pittman- Freelancer, animator and creator of the online graphic novel Red’s Planet, Eddie shared his work from various Disney features like “Mulan” and “Lilo and Stich”, to TV’s “Phineas and Ferb”, to his excellent web comic (which was nominated for a divisional award). Chris Houghton- The second recipient of the Jay Kennedy Memorial Scholarship for cartooning, Chris is a great success story. He’s worked on several animated TV shows, comics, MAD and more, including his own comic Reed Gunther. Greg Evans- The Reuben Award-winning creator of the syndicated comic strip Luann, Greg shared stories of some of his early tries at syndication, and about his 29 years doing Luann.

How do those with diabetes seek and create spaces of freedom from these consequences in everyday life? Looking to archival materials and social media discourse, I use a geographical, feminist lens to argue that the diabetic body is a place, a site, for historical and current applications of biomedical technologies that have embodied, emotional consequences for lifeworlds of people with diabetes. Before the discovery of insulin, everyday life with diabetes consisted of persistent high blood glucose levels, starvation diets, calorie counting, hopelessness, diminished lifeworlds, and early death. Now, nearly a century later, for those with access, treatment of diabetes may include the use of an increasing number of pharmaceutical innovations and technological devices to quantify and manage life with diabetes. These pro- grammed/programmable devices are interfaced with human flesh, described as part of an individual’s body and identity, creating diabetic cyborgs. Those embodying these devices seek liberation from negative consequences by hacking them, meaning to use or program the devices in ways not intended or against medical advisement, in order to individualize improvements to the device’s function. Management of dia- betes produces personal biomedical waste from daily use of ‘disposable’ items. I use reddit data to show how some seek freedom from the burden of waste management, while others seek freedom from guilt within a framework of biocitizenship.

    VHS 2.0: AMATEUR ARCHIVING ON THE INTERNET AND THE NOSTALGIC RECLAMATION OF RETRO MEDIA by Dax Sorrenti A THESIS SUBMITTED IN PARTIAL FULFILLMENT OF THE REQUIREMENTS FOR THE DEGREE OF MASTER OF ARTS in The Faculty of Graduate Studies (Film Studies) THE UNIVERSITY OF BRITISH COLUMBIA (Vancouver) April 2012 © Dax Sorrenti, 2012 Abstract The archiving of retro media on the internet has become one of the more prolific examples of amateur archiving in recent years. Using various case studies, I argue for a new understanding of how this orphaned and obsolete media preserves important nostalgic and cultural histories. Not only this, but the preservation of niche film and television programming deserves recognition for the intricate and complex work of amateur archivists, in the aims of validating their work and viewing the sharing of this material as more than simple file sharing. Often providing the only means by which to access material, these archival sites preserve history through its media output, and I provide a glimpse into the motivations and machinations of their inner workings.
