  • PRESS RELEASE Fraunhofer HHI Successfully Completes the Project
PRESS RELEASE Fraunhofer HHI successfully completes the project “Installation of VLC technology on the Island of Mainau” The “VLC Mainau” project was launched in the spring of 2015 with the objective to convert an existing conference room on the Island of Mainau (Lake Constance) using Visible Light Communication (VLC) technology. Now the project has been successfully concluded by the Fraunhofer Institute for Telecommunications, Heinrich Hertz Institute, HHI and Mainau GmbH with the realization of a novel optical WiFi environment. The conference room system was upgraded in several phases intended to offer insights about parameter optimization in view of practical applications. This VLC installation outside a laboratory environment is the first in Germany and one of the few field tests of this kind worldwide. A first VLC-based system was installed in the conference room during the first project phase. Also known as LiFi, the VLC technology is a WiFi alternative that supports the wireless exchange of large data volumes. The VLC technology was then expanded in the second project phase, providing flexible access to the Internet for multiple users. “This first VLC installation on the Island of Mainau was a very exciting project for us. We very much appreciate the constructive collaboration with Mainau GmbH and the financial support of the Baden-Württemberg Ministry of Environment. Today we are looking back on one year of continuous, error free operation of the installed system. Highly positive feedback from users shows that this technology will find a place in everyday life. The constructive comments are already being implemented into the further development of our systems today”, says Dr.

Together with Count Lennart Bernadotte from nearby Mainau Island, Franz Karl Hein and Gustav Wilhelm Parade realised the first “European Meeting of Nobel Laureates” with seven Nobel Laure- ates. Only two years later, the first students were invited – the rest is history. This summer, 39 Nobel Laureates and 580 young scientists from 89 coun- tries will join the 69th Lindau Nobel Laureate Meeting. Never before have so many countries been represented in this extraordinary exchange. All you excellent scientists from around the world have one thing in common: your passion for physics. We hope you will experience the special “Lindau Spir- it”– as more than 30.000 Lindau Alumni did before you.

  • Tour D'europe Enjoy a Variety of Cycle Routes Through
Tour d’Europe Enjoy a variety of cycle routes through four countries all from one unique location Welcome to the region of Lake Constance The Region of Lake Constance - In recent months we’ve seen some epic cycling events take place with the world’s finest competing for glory at the Giro d’Italia, Tour de France, Ride London Surrey Classic and most recently the Olympic Games Rio 2016. So this year, why not take to the road and explore one of Europe’s most international cycling hotspots, Lake Constance. As a location for a cycling holiday, the region of Lake Constance, lovingly called ‘Bodensee’ by local residents, offers visitors the unique opportunity to cycle through four countries; Germany, Austria, Switzerland and the Principality of Liechtenstein. The popular 273km Lake Constance cycle route allows you to circumnavigate the lake through Germany, Austria & Switzerland while the 64km detour from Lake Constance takes you on a picturesque route along the Rhine to the Principality of Liechtenstein. A period of between 4-7 days is recommended to complete the route and with the terrain being mostly flat with some rolling hills, it is perfect for beginners, families and keen cyclists alike. A second route worth mentioning is the incredibly scenic Danube – Lake Constance route leading from the world’s highest church spire to the banks of Lake Constance. Beginning in Ulm on the southern edge of the Swabian Alb, the route passes through the hilly countryside of Upper Swabia and finishes among the orchards and hop fields of Kressbronn on the banks of Lake Constance.
