  • Chilean Syrah from a Standing Start, Syrah Has Made It to Number Six in Chile’S Wine Pop Charts in Less Than 20 Years
PANEL TASTING Chilean Syrah From a standing start, Syrah has made it to number six in Chile’s wine pop charts in less than 20 years. And this could be just the beginning, says Peter Richards MW The sTory of syrah in Chile is not a straightforward one. It’s a tale still in the telling, with a murky past, highs and lows, capped by an uncertain future trajectory. This makes it intriguing, especially given that for some time it has been generating a good deal of excitement among wine lovers in the know. The key thing is that there are many – from drinkers to producers and wine critics alike – who hope that this is one saga with a happy ending. The history of syrah in Chile is a matter of debate. records suggest it may have arrived as early as the first half of the 19th century, in the Quinta Normal nursery project in santiago. Its commercial origins in the country, however, are most commonly attributed to Alejandro Dussaillant, a french immigrant who arrived in Chile in 1874 and planted vineyards in the Curicó region which included ‘gross syrah’. (Though this could equally have been the aromatic savoie variety Mondeuse Noire, which goes under this epithet and, according to Wine Grapes, is a close relative of syrah.) either way, by the early 1990s there was scant trace of syrah in Chile, the theory being that, even if it had been there, it was lost in the agrarian reforms of the 1970s. This started to change in the mid-1990s.

  • Sandeman Porto Fine Ruby
SANDEMAN PORTO FINE RUBY TYPE: Fortified COLOUR: Red TONE: Ruby DOC Porto Douro DESIGNATION OF ORIGIN: REGION: QR Code COUNTRY OF ORIGIN: Portugal THE WINE Descended from the fiery ruby Porto Wines originally shipped by George Sandeman in 1790, Sandeman Porto Fine Ruby is still made traditionally to be rich and robust yet with a special depth of flavour and the finesse, achieved by expertly blending wines from Sandeman´s large and varied stock. TASTING NOTES Brilliant red ruby in colour, with clean aromas of red fruits, plums and strawberries, Sandeman Porto Fine Ruby has full rich flavours and is very well balanced. Rich, round, balanced in the mouth, with overt flavours of fresh plums and red fruits. WINEMAKER: Luís Sottomayor VARIETIES Touriga Franca, Tinta Roriz, Tinta Amarela, Tinta Barroca, Tinto Cão WINEMAKING Sandeman Porto Fine Ruby is produced by the traditional Porto Wine method. The hand-picked grapes undergo stalk-removal and crushing before fermentation, under controlled temperature, with skin maceration so as to extract the best components. The addition of wine alcohol at the ideal moment sets the balance between the wine's body and bouquet. This moment is chosen by the winemaker following strict control of fermentation temperatures and densities, the later depending on the vine variety, maturation stage and the final sweetness required. MATURATION After the harvest, the wines remain in the Douro until the following Spring, when they are taken to V.N.Gaia and enter Sandeman's centuries-old lodges for ageing in oak wood casks, as required by Porto Wine traditional ageing system.

  • Sandeman Fine Ruby Port
Sandeman Fine Ruby Port Grape Varietals: Tinta Amarela, Tinta Barroca, Tinta Roriz, Tinto Cão, Touriga Franca Growing Region: Douro Valley - Portugal Head Winemaker: Luís Sottomayor Sandeman has arguably one of the most well-known logos featuring the caped man named ‘Don’ dressed in a Portuguese student's cape and a wide Spanish hat. But for those in the know - Sandeman is well known and respected for the consistency of their dynamic range of quality Port wines. I have fond memories of visiting their terraced vineyards in the heart of the Douro and also spending quality time with the team at their stunning cellars on the water’s edge in Villa Nova de Gaia. As each terrace is hand-picked and the fruit arrives into the winery, the bunches have their stalks removed before crushing and fermentation. Which is under controlled temperatures, and skin maceration so as to extract the best characters. The addition of grape-spirit at the ideal moment sets the balance between the wine's vivid aromatics, flavour profile & final sweetness. After fermentation, the wine remains in the Douro Valley until the following spring, when the wine is taken to Villa Nova de Gaia to enter the Sandeman's centuries-old lodges for ageing in oak casks, as required by the Porto Wine traditional ageing system. Throughout this time the wine is carefully tasted and assessed by the winemaking team who also make any necessary corrections and then prepare the final blend so as to keep to the desired Sandeman Fine Ruby style and character. The wines selected for the blend are usually between 2 - 5 years of age, which makes it possible to obtain a vibrant and youthful wine with an average age of 3 years.

Sandeman Porto Fine Tawny has the fruit and style of great Porto but with an added finesse. • Wines of Spain Introduction Spanish Wine Classification Spanish Wine
Wines of Spain Introduction Spain is the third largest wine producer in the world and has the largest land area dedicated to vineyards than any other country. Earlier, it was known for ‘sherry’ and red wines from Rioja, outside Spain. However, today, almost all its wines are well – recognized because of dedicated and continuous efforts on improving the quality. Some new wine makers are employing modern technology and introduce classic grape varieties along with native grapes, to wide range of wines. Spain has a diverse climate which gives a variety of wine styles – full – bodied wines, light wines, and sparkling wines. Sparkling wines are made in Spain using methode champenoise named Cava. Spanish Wine Classification Spanish wine classification is based on French appellation system, which not only identifies the specific area of production and the grapes used but also the minimum ageing period which is applied to all Spanish wines. Spanish Wine Areas Rioja This region makes the best known Spanish table wines, including red and white of different styles and rose. The key feature of Rioja is that it is aged for a longer period in 225 litre barricas (barrels); for instance, reds are aged as long as 15-20 years obtaining an oak flavour from the wood. The reds are mainly from tempranillo. The whites of Rioja are made chiefly viura. The three Rioja red wine classifications, as found on the front or back of Spanish wine bottle labels are as follows – • Crianza – This is fresh, fruit – flavored, youthful, red wine that is aged in oak for a minimum of one year and then kept another year for ageing in the bottle.

GOLD MEDAL WINE CLUB TASTE THE ADVENTURE ARGENTINA C URRENTLY THE WORLD’S 5TH LARGEST WINE PRODUCER, ARGENTINA IS POISED TO BECOME A SERIOUS PLAYER IN THE INTERNATIONAL WINE MARKET. As with much of Argentina’s cuisine, the country’s huge wine industry had its roots in Spain. The first documented record of a commercial vineyard was by Jesuit missionaries in 1557. Three hundred years later, French agronomist Miguel Aime Pouget brought the first cuttings of Malbec to Argentina that would eventually grow to become the country’s signature varietal. Argentina currently ranks fifth in annual production and eighth in production, making its wine industry a very important part of the national economy. Vineyards now stretch from the tiny Jujuy Region in the far north to the Rio Negro Region, south southwest of Buenos Aires and far to the south of most vineyard land. Mendoza, in the center of the country, is the highest-rated wine producing region in the country and is home to the first quality movement the country has experienced in the past thirty years. In Mendoza, most of the vineyards are located at relatively high altitudes, ranging from 1900 to 3600 feet, much higher than most commercial vineyards in Europe and the United States. Many Argentine vintners place the altitudes of the vines on their front labels as a source of great pride and accomplishment. For many hundreds of years, quantity, as opposed to quality, was the formula for most Argentine wineries. With huge national consumption, there was little need of extremely high quality wines to compete on the international markets.
