  • Lartigue and His Cars – an Exhibition
Press Release January 2016 LARTIGUE AND HIS CARS – AN EXHIBITION From the Monaco Grand Prix to the ACF Grand Prix, Jacques Lartigue, famous photographer and cars addict, shot the most beautiful cars of his time. For its 41st edition, Retromobile will honor this fabulous photographer, forerunner of the photography in motion, through the exhibition « Lartigue et les autos », 33 novel printing framed, dated and certified will be exceptionally offer for sale. He would point his lens wherever he felt like it… at the most varied range of subject matters. He photographed the 1905 Gordon Bennett Cup, the 1978 Monaco Grand Prix and the ACF Grand Prix of the golden age. He documented the 1912 Gaillon hill race, the opening of the Linas-Montlhery Aerodrome in 1924, the roaring 20s races in San Sebastian, La Baule and Cap d’Antibes and the 1967 Indianapolis 500 automobile race. He even photographed the filming of The Racers in 1954 and the 1966 Grand Prix in Monaco. For our delight, Lartigue immortalised vehicles built by Lorraine-Dietrich, Darracq, F.I.A.T, Schneider, Delage and Peugeot, as well as other Bugattis and Alfa Romeos, using his immense and unique talent to represent this "chic impression of speed". Lartigue and the cars It's impossible to think about Lartigue’s photographs without remembering his "deformed cars", as certain people liked to call them. This is evidence of the fact that this particular image has almost become a sort of "logo" representing Lartigue’s work. It encapsulates a number of the qualities that are inherent to his photographs: movement, dynamism, modernity and beauty.

P.1 of 18 1st Naturally-Aspirated Era (1NA) 1906 – 1923: 9 Racing Years This Era can be sub-divided technically into 6 years pre-WW1 (1NA-1) and 3 years post-War (1NA -2), because of the technology changes which were invented and developed to improve aero- engines during that conflict, although they did not all appear immediately afterwards in Grand Prix racing-engine design. Era 1NA-1: 1906 – 1914: 6 racing years In this sub-Era, which was preceded by 11 years of city-to-city and Gordon Bennett pre-Grand Prix Naturally-Aspirated racing, all the winning engines were IL4* and had cast-iron or machined-steel pistons in cast-iron or fabricated-steel blocks with integral heads , breathing always through a single updraught carburetter. However, the sub-Era gave rise to very rapid changes in cylinder-head design. _____________________________ * In the 1907 French GP (FGP) 3 makes of IL8 engines appeared but none finished (835,940). Their day would come after WW1 development of multi-cylinder designs. In the 1908 FGP 2 makes of IL6 raced but only 2 out of 6 cars finished in lowly places (940). Eg. 1. 1906 Renault AK; 12,986cc; 90HP @ 1,200RPM See Figs. 1A, 1B, 1C, 1D. Eg. 2. 1907 FIAT; 16,286cc; 130HP @ 1,600RPM See Fig. 2A Eg.3. 1908 Mercedes; 13,533cc; 138HP @ 1,600RPM See Fig. 3A. Era 1NA-1 opened in Cars-of-the-Year (CoY) with the side-valve (SV) Renault of Bore (B)/Stroke (S) = 166mm/150 = 1.11. This SV arrangement had been pioneered by the company in their Type A of 1902.

  • 80 Years Ago – Bugatti Wins 24 Hours of Le Mans
80 years ago – Bugatti wins 24 Hours of Le Mans MOLSHEIM 18 06 2019 IN 1939, A BUGATTI TYPE 57 C TECHNICALLY CLOSE TO THE PRODUCTION CAR SURPRISES IN LE MANS It´s one of the most famous and toughest endurance races in the world: the 24-Hours of Le Mans in France. It is the birthplace of legends. Exactly 80 years ago, on the 18th of June 1939 two Frenchman were victorious with their French race car: Jean-Pierre Wimille and Pierre Veyron in a Bugatti Type 57 C Tank. Incidentally, Bugatti would remain the reigning champion for the next ten years. 50 drivers entered the race in eight different categories, but only 42 would actually start the race. 80 years ago, the 24-Hours of Le Mans were already an outright manufacturer’s battle, although the race did not belong to any racing series back then. The competition was tremendous: 25 vehicles alone came from France, with famous brands like Delahaye, Delage and Talbot. On the starting grid were Adlerwerk and BMW from Germany, Great Britain was represented Aston Martin, Morgan, Riley, MG and Singer and from Italy Alfa Romeo. Bugatti went to the race with great enthusiasm. The previous year, the French car maker had had to renounce their start in the prestigious race due to technical problems. This year, however, with the 16thedition of the Type 57, everything was working. Under the streamlined body of the Type 57 race version there was a nearly series production chassis of the Type 57 C, developed by Jean Bugatti, the brilliant engineer and son of l Bugatti founder Ettore.

  • 1936 Talbot Lago T150C
1936 Talbot Lago T150C POA 1936 Talbot Lago T150C Recreation Utilising all Factory parts. History of the Talbot T150c sports racing cars. In 1936 the Automobile Club de France announced a new formula for sports cars, this was a protest against the total dominance in Grand Prix racing of the German teams of Auto Union and Mercedes Benz. French manufacturers responded to the challenge, Delage, Delahaye. Bugatti, and the Paris Suresnes company of Talbot Darraq where a new sports racing car was built using a well developed chassis. Talbot company chief designer Walter Becchia produced a redesign of the already successful 3 litre engine with an increase to 3,989 cc, a low mounted single camshaft and an alloy hemispherical combustion chamber cylinder head feeding 3 downdraft Zenith carburetors, it gave these engines a nominal 165 bhp with exceptional torque and made the T150c amongst the fastest sports cars of the pre war period, well capable of exceeding 130 mph. They achieved excellent success in both sports car racing and stripped of their road equipment in Grand Prix events, with great drivers such as Etancelin, Chiron, Sommer. Only 6 of the T150c cars were built. Chassis numbers 82930 to 82935. In the post war period T‐150c Talbot’s continued to be used in sports car events, some were re‐bodied according to the post war trends and became familiar at many of the 1940s European Grand Prix’s and of course Le Mans. In recent years most of the cars are accounted for, except one that is missing and one that still has a post war single seat body The remaining cars exist now back to their original Talbot Lago Darraq T150c configuration.
