Attendance News May 2018

Congratulations to the following tutor group who have won our next fortnightly attendance competition.

2 New data protection laws (GDPR) This is the second in a series of articles about changes that we are making in response to the imminent changes of law in relation to data protection. Last week I wrote about emails and the basis on which we process data. This week's article is about something that will affect students directly.

Although most of the changes we are making in response to GDPR are administrative and will not be noticed by most students, one area in which students will notice a definite change is that we will be phasing out the use of portable drives for storing files. This is happening for a variety of different reasons, and GDPR is simply the one which tipped the balance in favour of making a definite change.

USB drives are notoriously unreliable and frequently lost by students; this is a big issue for students when they lose their coursework or crucial notes as they do with monotonous regularity USB drives are a potential source of transmission of malware and viruses.

We have a reliable cloud drive service available to all students (Office 365’s OneDrive) which means they do not need USB drives to make their files portable; OneDrive is also properly backed up so that earlier versions of files can be recovered when needed.

We want to ensure that we do everything we can to reduce or remove the possibility of data being lost by our staff.

Our staff are not storing students’ personal data on their USB drives at the moment, but we want to remove the possibility of accidents happening and get everyone used to accessing OneDrive, so we will be taking steps to force this issue and by September the computers in school will not recognise USB drives when they are plugged in.

Students and staff have the rest of the summer term to get used to working with OneDrive while still being able to use USB sticks. In September they will need to be using OneDrive as USB sticks will not work in school.

Second hand-uniform day has changed to Fridays 1.30-3.00pm Could you spare an hour during the week to help run the second hand uniform shop? If so, please contact Mr Vincent on [email protected] Do you have any uniform or PE kit you could donate? If so, please drop it into reception.

Arriving on time for school is practice for when they progress into the world of work. Although the vast majority of students do arrive in good time, a small number have recently arrived late for form time.

Students are now being detained by ‘late gate’ if they arrive in school later than the form time bell. This means that students must be in school before 8.45am. The main entrance will be open until 9.05am with all other entrances to the school site locked at 8.45am.

Students therefore need to be setting off earlier and ensuring they arrive on time before 8.45am and should aim to be in the building by 8.40am.

Thank you in advance for your support.

4 Mental Health Awareness Week 14th - 20th May

Hosted by the Mental Health Foundation, this year for Mental Health Awareness Week, the focus is on stress. Research has shown that two thirds of us experience a mental health problem in our lifetimes, and stress is a key factor in this.

By tackling stress, we can go a long way to tackle mental health problems such as anxiety and depression, and, in some instances, self-harm and suicide. Click on this link for advice and guidance from the Mental Health Foundation: https://www.mentalhealth.org.uk/campaigns/mental-health-awareness-week

This topic will be discussed in form time next week. For further information on school based advice guidance, students should speak to their form tutor, student manager or visit the Wellbeing Hub.

Please find below a full list of Revision Guides available from PrintWorks. Parents and students are welcome to call in during the school day to purchase Revision Guides and other exams supplies. Our opening hours are 8.30am - 4.00pm Monday to Friday

Evening of Dance and

80 students from Wilmslow High School took part in a collaborative Dance show at Poynton High School on Thursday 10th May. The evening consisted of a variety of dance pieces from both schools and covered many styles of dance.

Year 11 students showcased their excellent examination choreography work and revisited an exciting version of ‘You can’t stop the Beat’ from Hairspray the Musical. The BTEC Year 10 students demonstrated choreography from the contemporary piece ‘A Linha Curva’ and in contrast, the zombie-based movements of Michael Jackson’s ‘Thriller’.

The Year 10 and Year 11 students who form Wilmslow High School’s Dance Company, delighted the audience with two contrasting pieces which they themselves helped to choreograph. The Key Stage 3 Arts Xtra groups performed several pieces. They ranged from a beautiful contemporary dance called ‘Lost Boy’, to a sixties inspired piece called ‘Feel it Still’. Year 7, 8 and 9 Dance clubs finished the evening with a vibrant jazz piece from the movie ‘The Greatest Showman’. Well done to everyone involved. It was a very special evening.

Tennis On Tuesday, the senior tennis team played Merchant Taylor’s in the first round of the Aberdare Cup, where the team won 9 sets to 1. The team consisted of Ellie Aldrich, Olivia French, Jess Purdy and Alice Kraunsoe and proved to have far too much skill and experience for their opposition.

The girls won all of the singles, but only managed to play one set in the doubles due to the rain. Football On Tuesday the U16 girls finally played Leftwich County High School in the Cheshire Cup final. With the game long overdue after a fixture pile-up due to the long winter, the girls were more than ready. The game was tight throughout and physically draining, with a number suffering through injury or cramp. In the end, they narrowly missed out, losing 1-0, and although the girls were disappointed, should be proud of a great season.

On Wednesday it was the turn of the U14 boys, who made the journey to Middlewich to play their own Cheshire Cup final. Again, this came at the end of a great season for the boys, in which they had been scoring goals for fun. were the opposition and it turned out to be another close, hard fought encounter. Unfortunately, the boys free scoring run deserted them, with Sandbach having to defend extremely well to keep the boys out. An improved second half performance saw the boys pushing for an equaliser that never came as the boys lost 1-0. Nevertheless, another great season! Cricket U14 Cheshire Cup Result The U14 were knocked out of the Cheshire Cup by Altrincham Grammar. Mr Sachro and Mr Lightfoot are now looking forward to what should be a successful run in the Cheshire Plate for the Year 9s. WHS lost by 8 wickets: WHS 61 - 8 AGSB 62 – 2 Max Percival showing some impetus with an impressive 11* in the first innings.

1st XI T20 Result The National T20 Cup got underway. Wilmslow High were drawn into a group with Cheadle Hulme School and Stockport Grammar. A great day for all the students involved, who competed with some of the best cricketers in the county. WHS lost to CHS: CHS 174 – 6 WHS 127 – 5

Tom Rae and Jack Moran were the pick of the bowlers; James Oliver, Harry Oliver and Alex Hunt all performed well with the bat. The highlight of this game was definitely Jack Moran picking up the wicket of North England batsman Ed Fluck, who is likely to turn pro this summer, caught in the deep by James Oliver. WHS lost to SGS SGS 137 – 7 WHS 94ao Tom Rae picking up 3 wickets and made a great knock of 30. Unfortunately, there were just a few too many runs on the board to chase down! 7 Fixtures week commencing 12th May 2018
