Renee, Lucy and their guests will be invited to the celebration event on Friday 28th June at 4pm in The Portico Library. There will be readings from selected winners, a performance from local author and story teller, Pete Kalu, and the opportunity to meet the judges and take photographs. Renee and Lucy will also be presented with their @wilmslowhigh prizes, which include a certificate and a copy of Time Travellers and @whigh_maths the Crystal Dome, a book of exciting stories centred around the Portico @whigh_eng Library. wilmslowhigh.com In addition, Lucy’s winning story will be printed and published in the latest edition of this book. Lucy has also won a book token and a free workshop for the school. 1 NOTES MOBILE PHONES Support for students Please can you remind your son or daughter that taking examinations mobiles phones should be switched off and placed in their bag before the bell at 8:45am. Students are aware of the following two useful links, but just as a reminder: MOBILE PHONES SHOULD NOT BE TAKEN OUT OF BAGS DURING THE SCHOOL DAY. Attendance News May 2018 Congratulations to the following tutor group who have won our next fortnightly attendance competition. 2 New data protection laws (GDPR) This is the second in a series of articles about changes that we are making in response to the imminent changes of law in relation to data protection. Last week I wrote about emails and the basis on which we process data. This week's article is about something that will affect students directly. Although most of the changes we are making in response to GDPR are administrative and will not be noticed by most students, one area in which students will notice a definite change is that we will be phasing out the use of portable drives for storing files. This is happening for a variety of different reasons, and GDPR is simply the one which tipped the balance in favour of making a definite change. USB drives are notoriously unreliable and frequently lost by students; this is a big issue for students when they lose their coursework or crucial notes as they do with monotonous regularity USB drives are a potential source of transmission of malware and viruses. We have a reliable cloud drive service available to all students (Office 365’s OneDrive) which means they do not need USB drives to make their files portable; OneDrive is also properly backed up so that earlier versions of files can be recovered when needed. We want to ensure that we do everything we can to reduce or remove the possibility of data being lost by our staff. Our staff are not storing students’ personal data on their USB drives at the moment, but we want to remove the possibility of accidents happening and get everyone used to accessing OneDrive, so we will be taking steps to force this issue and by September the computers in school will not recognise USB drives when they are plugged in. Students and staff have the rest of the summer term to get used to working with OneDrive while still being able to use USB sticks. In September they will need to be using OneDrive as USB sticks will not work in school. Arriving on time for school is practice for when they progress into the world of work. Although the vast majority of students do arrive in good time, a small number have recently arrived late for form time. Students are now being detained by ‘late gate’ if they arrive in school later than the form time bell. This means that students must be in school before 8.45am. The main entrance will be open until 9.05am with all other entrances to the school site locked at 8.45am. Students therefore need to be setting off earlier and ensuring they arrive on time before 8.45am and should aim to be in the building by 8.40am. Thank you in advance for your support. 4 Mental Health Awareness Week 14th - 20th May Hosted by the Mental Health Foundation, this year for Mental Health Awareness Week, the focus is on stress. Research has shown that two thirds of us experience a mental health problem in our lifetimes, and stress is a key factor in this. By tackling stress, we can go a long way to tackle mental health problems such as anxiety and depression, and, in some instances, self-harm and suicide. The evening consisted of a variety of dance pieces from both schools and covered many styles of dance. Year 11 students showcased their excellent examination choreography work and revisited an exciting version of ‘You can’t stop the Beat’ from Hairspray the Musical. The BTEC Year 10 students demonstrated choreography from the contemporary piece ‘A Linha Curva’ and in contrast, the zombie-based movements of Michael Jackson’s ‘Thriller’. The Year 10 and Year 11 students who form Wilmslow High School’s Dance Company, delighted the audience with two contrasting pieces which they themselves helped to choreograph. The Key Stage 3 Arts Xtra groups performed several pieces. They ranged from a beautiful contemporary dance called ‘Lost Boy’, to a sixties inspired piece called ‘Feel it Still’.
