Tucker Maxon School Annual Report FINAL Tucker Maxon School Annual Report 2015-16 Dear Tucker Maxon School community, We had another very successful year in 2015–16. We had 110 students, with 31 children who are deaf and 79 children with typical hearing. We started the year by unveiling our wonderful new monument sign in front of the school. We added new staff including Rick Sorensen, Laura Pierce and Emelia Wessel. We strengthened our Board with the addition of Lee Vandegrift, Jim Knutsen, John Lenz, Cathleen Robart, Mary Hull, Homer Chin and Christi Sperry. Tucker Maxon was named to the Top 100 Nonprofits in Oregon list for the first time in our history. We revolutionized our student access to technology with 36 new Chromebook computers. We purchased five LENA digital recorders and software to help our Early Intervention families obtain their language goals. Our annual end-of-the-year appeal Jennifer Lootens, M Ed and auction set new fundraising records, and a generous donor helped put a new roof on kindergarten and the library. KATU TV profiled principal Linda Goodwin as an Everyday Hero in the Portland community. Our soil, water and air all passed safety tests in the latter half of the school year after city-wide concerns at PPS and in the neighborhood. On a lighter note, students voted for tigers Tuck and Max as the new school mascots. Finally, we ended the year in a very strong financial position (see page 2). We could not do this work without you. Thank you! With gratitude, Jennifer Lootens, Board President Glen Gilbert, Executive Director Glen C. Looking closer, you the dark waxy leaves of the rhododendron and over to the begin to see the complexity inherent in meeting the needs side, the neon green spikes of the Japanese Iris. of children with all kinds of traumatic life experience. We have programs that treat families in the community; some I parked my car close to the fence, drawn to the peaceful children live with us because their needs are so great, and setting provided by the garden, and as I walked through the others receive group treatment in a classroom setting, in gates, what I saw changed as though I were staring through one of our clinics, or in their daycare. I was first involved with Our House in 1991, when I volunteered as a breakfast cook, and I’ve loved its mission – “Inspiring people with HIV/AIDS to live well” – ever since. This is my third season being directly involved with Dinner at My House for Our House, and I feel lucky to be your honorary chair this year. Like me, I’m sure you’ll be impressed by all the choices, from Lite Bites to Chef’s Table to everything in-between. I love traveling – out of state, out of the country, or even just out of the city on a hike in the Oregon woods with Eddie, my trusty canine sidekick – and I’m guessing lots of you enjoy traveling too. But why not take a cross-cultural jaunt through Dinner at My House for Our House by picking out a handful of your favorite events? Stop over in Africa. Take a seat in Bali. Dive into margaritas in Mexico. And do all this right here in Portland, with kindred spirits all backing the same great cause. Many years ago, as a teenager, I was treated to a very special dinner. The place was on the dark end of a street near the docks, in an old tavern building built in the 1800s.
