Begun in England 150 years ago, it took more than 60 years to complete, and when it was finally finished in 1928, the British prime minister heralded it as a ‘national treasure’. It maintained this image throughout the twentieth century, and in 2006 the English public voted it an ‘Icon of England’, alongside Marmite, Buckingham Palace, and the bowler hat. But this book shows that the dictionary is not as ‘British’ as we all thought. The linguist and lexicographer, Sarah Ogilvie, combines her insider knowledge and experience with impeccable research to show that the OED is in fact an international product in both its content and its making. She examines the policies and practices of the various editors, applies qualitative and quantitative analysis, and finds new OED archival materials in the form of letters, reports, and proofs. HISTORY OF ANTHROPOLOGY NEWSLETIER 35.1 (JUNE 2008) / 3 Measuring the Natives: Beatrice Blackwood and Leonard Dudley Buxton's work in Oxfordshire Alison Petch, Pitt Rivers Museum, University of Oxford I have been engaged for some years on research projects examining the history of the Pitt Rivers Museum (PRM) at the University of Oxford and its collections.[ 1] Recently, I have been examining the English collections held at this ethnographic museum in close detail, as part of the UK Economic and Social Research Council-funded project, "The Other Within." [2] Although the findings reported in this paper have turned out to be only tangentially related to my main research subject, they provide insight into one form of anthropological fieldwork at the University of Oxford in the UK in the 1920s and 1930s. This work was related to philosophical and scientific debates widespread at that time, not only in academia but also in politics: all over Europe, scholars, politicians and members of the general public were increasingly interested in nationalism, defining "native populations" and historical antecedents. -

Rives ©2017 Shaily Shashikant Patel ALL RIGHTS RESERVED ii ABSTRACT Shaily Shashikant Patel: Magical Practices and Discourses of Magic in Early Christian Traditions: Jesus, Peter, and Paul (Under the direction of Bart D. Ehrman) This project represents a methodological intervention in the study of magic in early Christianity. Modern scholars have overwhelmingly adopted post-Enlightenment, exclusively discursive understandings of magic with which to approach ancient evidence. That is to say, contemporary historians believe that the ancient Christians crafted magic in the charge against theological opponents. As a result, magic was a concept empty of all content until it was levied against others. In contrast, the following study attempts to show that while magic was a discursive category in the ancient Graeco-Roman world, certain practices attendant to this discourse demonstrated relative stability. Some activities were more likely to convey the charge of magic than others. Practices like reanimation-necromancy and love spells tended to be associated with magic more often than practices like healing or exorcism. These areas of dynamism and fixity have wide-ranging implications for the study of early Christian magic. Rather than understanding early Christians as either participating in magic or not, the following project shows how Christians crafted their distinctive magical tradition along two indices: the narration of magical practices and the subsequent interpretation of these practices. -

Marius Barbeau, 1932 1 ome of Canada's early twentieth-century museum-based anthropologists Spromoted vitalist notions in their new social science discipline, attempting to "humanize" the rigours of working within an emerging field modeled on the natural sciences. In the case of Marius Barbeau (1883-1969), vitalism seems to have significantly facilitated his collaborations with various Canadian modernist artists.2 Not only did Barbeau understand and valorize their work in vitalist terms, but the artists themselves seem to have been in accord, to some extent, with a variety of vitalist concepts about matter, memory and re-presentation. Jennifer Hecht has described how vitalism resurged strongly in late nineteenth century France in reaction against scientific explanations of life, when many people decided that: the phenomena of life and consciousness are not explicable through physics, chemistry, and biology: something sort of spiritual is going on. DuBois Excerpt More information chapter 1 Shamanism and the issue of religion On a blustery winter morning on the campus of a major American research university, I have the opportunity to sit with a unique individual. Thai is an undergraduate anthropology student with a second major in South- east Asian studies. He is also a txiv neeb, what scholars of religion term a shaman. Thai is a member of Wisconsin’s numerous and thriving Hmong community, a set of people who relocated to the United States from their homeland in Laos starting in the mid-1970s, in the aftermath of the Vietnam War. In Laos, Hmong people lived in mountainous areas, and combined traditional hunting and gathering practices with small-scale agriculture and livestock husbandry. Much has changed in their rebuilding of lives in the United States, but some things remain the same. One of these, at least in Thai’s view, is the crucial relation that exists between Hmong people and an unseen but highly influential spirit world. As a txiv neeb, Thai is a specialist in these relations, a traveler between the visible world of the everyday and a profoundly different and powerful unseen. Through a set of rituals that hold psychic and physical dangers for the practitioner, Thai travels that spirit world, pursuing, confronting, cajoling, and confounding spirit entities on behalf of his clients and community. -

Introduction
INTRODUCTION Peter Rivière The formal recognition of anthropology’s existence at Oxford University occurred in the spring of 1905 with the promulgation of a statute creating ‘a Committee for the organization of the advanced study of Anthropology, and to establish Diplomas in Anthropology to be granted after examination’ (Oxford University Gazette (hereafter OUG) 1904–5: 536). The Committee for Anthropology, as it was known, met for the first time on 27 October 1905. The year 2005 thus seemed an appropriate and suitable occasion on which to celebrate the centenary of the subject at the University. This volume is composed of the contributions made to a workshop on the history of anthropology at Oxford University which was held in conjunction with the centenary celebrations. For some years I had been planning to write a history of Oxford anthropology with a view to its publication around the date of the centenary. In the event, another major publishing commitment made it clear to me that, as a single-handed project, this was unrealisable. On the other hand, as the plans for a centenary conference developed, a session devoted to the history of Oxford anthropology was included. This volume contains the proceedings of that session held on 16 September 2005. Thus my original intention became a reality on the back of shared labour. I have no doubt that the various contributors, with their different approaches and insights, have brought to the volume a far broader, more many-sided picture than I alone would have achieved. A criticism might be made, and, knowing academics, almost certainly will be, of the choice of contributors; that it is too much an ‘insiders’ history. -

The essay argues that this diversity is caused less by inadequate readings of Weber than by inconsistencies in Weber’s own conceptualization. Weber introduced his concept of charisma in two diVerent contexts: his political sociology and his sociology of religion. In his political sociology he formulates the ideal type of charismatic authority informed by R. Sohm. In his sociology of religion Weber connects it with the anthropological debate of the turn of the century on magic and religion, especially the debate on pre-animism initiated by R. R. Marett, and uses it as an alternative for concepts like mana or orenda. -

Download date: 23-09-2021 2 Eighteenth and nineteenth-century interpretations At the beginning of the twentieth century, the Swedish traveller and journalist Jonas Jonsson Stadling (1847-1935) criticised the overwhelming variety of inter- pretations of ‘shamans’ and ‘shamanism’ and, above all, the extraordinary overgen- eralisations of some interpreters: To give a general description of the fundamental traits of the Shamanistic reli- gion is no easy task, because this has to be made out of a chaos of often appar- ently contradictory details, which have not been preserved in written original documents but only in vague and fragmentary second-hand allusions, in con- stantly changing traditions, or in personal observations among the still living adherents of those tenets.1 Stadling’s personal observations made him conclude that ‘shamanism’ was not a term known to those who were supposed to adhere to it. -

Understanding and Assessing the Contribution of Sir E.B Tylor and Early Anthropological Approaches to the Study of Religion Convenor: Liam Sutherland, PhD candidate, University of Edinburgh Contact: [email protected] Abstract: Abstract Many historical figures and their approaches continue to be a vital part of the study of religion; the approach of the founder of Cultural Anthropology, Sir E.B Tylor and other early Anthropological approaches are often not accorded the same respect. These include scholars such as Herbert Spencer, August Comte, Robert R. Marett and Sir James G. Frazer. There are many issues which could be discussed: what historical role did they play in the genesis of the field? Are these approaches merely of historical interest or are can they prove useful for the contemporary study of religion? Are there contemporary approaches which display an influence or an affinity with these approaches? If so what aspects of these approaches must be jettisoned in order to make them acceptable for the contemporary study of religion? What role did these approaches play in the legitimisation and consolidation of European colonialism? Outline The work of Sir Edward Burnett Tylor (1832-1917) and his immediate predecessors, contemporaries and successors such as: August Comte (1794-1859) Herbert Spencer (1820-1903), Sir James George Frazer (1854-1941), Robert Ranulph Marett (1866-1943) and Andrew Lang (1844-1912) played a formative role in the creation of comparative, social scientific studies of religion, yet they are rarely regarded as useful for contemporary theory and method in the study of religion. This panel will provide an opportunity for contributing papers to discuss a variety of issues surrounding any of the early Anthropological approaches to the study of religion.
