Brothers and Sisters in Christ, I trust you have all been enjoying the wonderful weather we’ve been having over the past few weeks. I suspect that in all probability it`s increased the amount of time we are spending in our gardens and the parks around us which can’t be a bad thing. I had the good fortune recently to visit one of my parishioners who is recovering from a spell in hospital. We spent a little time in his garden in the bright sunshine and soon became aware not only of the smell of lavender drifting off the bushes but also the number of bees faithfully working away collecting nectar and perhaps more importantly getting covered in pollen so they cross pollinate the other plants in the garden. Now unlike my predecessor Fr. Jim, I am not a bee keeper so it was fascinating to learn about the habits of the honey bees and to see the bee house which is home to the larvae of the leaf cutter bees, each little tube neatly stoppered with what seemed to be chewed up remnants of the leaves that give the bee its name. As I walked home my mind turned to thoughts on the amazing nature of a God who could create something as astounding as the bee in all its different varieties. Yet it`s us, humankind, who are blindly killing them off by our use of insecticides. Perhaps they are one more thing we won’t miss until we wake up one morning and find that one more species has disappeared from the list of those that once populated our beautiful planet. Bees and beekeepers have a special place in the life of the Church as well. They are mentioned as part of the Exsultet sung at Dawn on Easter morning when we give thanks for the ‘work of mother bee’ in producing the wax used to make the Paschal candle. Bees and beekeepers have their own patron Saints as well. For Bees it`s St. Ambrose who also doubles for beekeepers but if you are a beekeeper and don’t fancy St. Ambrose then you are spoiled for choice. You can choose from: St. Valentine, St. Dominic, St. Gobhnet (otherwise known as St. Deborah or St. Abigail), St. Bernard and even St. John and I’m sure many more that I’ve missed. So next time you are out in your garden wondering what to plant, why not plant some lavender or one of the many other bee friendly plants you can look up or read about on line and give thanks to God and the bee related Patron Saint of your choice for the work of Mother Bee. Yours in Christ. Rev. Nick Williams Vicar of the Benefice of East Malling, Wateringbury and Teston. Can you help please?
