TITLE: 2011 Census – Ethnicity, Country of Birth, Faith and Main Language Spoken

Introduction

Summarised below is information from the Census in relation to ethnicity, country of birth, language and religion. This information was released in December 2012.

Key Points

1. The White UK ethnic group is 40.5% which is a sharp fall from the 2001 level (for ) of 61.2%. The White UK share is lower than in both as a whole (44.9%) and well below the level in (79.8%) . 2. The next largest groups are Other White (18.2%) and Black African (9.0%) 3. The non UK born population is 35.1% of the total with Turkey being the most prominent country of birth at 4.5%. 4. The number belonging to the Muslim faith doubled in 10 years, representing 16.7% of the population in 2011. 5. 28% of households in Enfield have one or more adults whose main language is not English, while 14.1% of households have no adults whose main language is English.

The ‘stand out’ changes over 10 years are substantial increases in the ‘White Other White’, Black African and ‘Other Any other’ groups, while the White British share fell from 61.2% at 2001 to 40.5%.

Country of origin - Non UK born 35.1% of usual residents were born outside of the UK. This is up from 25.1% at the 2001 Census. The two countries having the largest numbers after England are Turkey (13,968; 4.5%) and Poland (6,011; 1.9%).

Language This was a new question in 2011. 28% of households in Enfield have one or more adults whose main language is not English. Enfield ranks 17th in England & Wales for the proportion of households where no person has English as their main language (14.1%). This compares to 12.9% in London and only 4.4% in England. Details of the non English languages spoken is not yet available and will be provided in a subsequent Census release.

Religion The proportion of all residents describing themselves as Christian fell from 63.2% at 2001 to 53.6% at 2011. The proportion of all residents describing themselves as Muslim rose from 9.6% to 16.7% with the number virtually doubling – up 98% from 26,306 to 52,141).
