In a truly interdisciplinary and innovative way the book connects aspects of the aftermath of war that are not usually analyzed together. Changes in medical and psychological thinking about the consequences of the war and the prevalence of war-related health problems are analyzed in the context of the political and cultural histories of Cold War, welfare state, memory and psychiatry. a ISBN 978-90-5260-371-1 Distributed in North America by Transaction Publishers. First of all, of course, our eight authors, who, with enormous dedication and resourcefulness, have opened up a new area of research. We retain very good memories of our collaboration, and in particular of our work conference in Amsterdam on 10 October 2008. The active and inspirational contribution of our oldest author, Polish psychiatrist and family therapist Maria Orwid, on that day is still vivid in our minds. We deeply regret that she is not here to see the publica- tion of this book, but we consider ourselves fortunate that our work could profit from her valuable knowledge and insights. Maria Orwid passed away in February 2009, at the age of 78. Furthermore we thank Julia Suchar. Had it not been for her kind offices we never would have been able to include Poland in this project. We also received assistance from historian Karel Berkhoff, sociologist Tom de Ridder and psycho- therapist Kees van der Velden, who provided, each in his own field, essential con- tributions. Thanks are also due to the scientific supervisory committee, consist- ing of dr. Eveline Buchheim, dr. Conny Kristel and prof. dr. Peter Romijn of the Netherlands Institute for War Documentation, and prof. dr. Pieter Lagrou of the Université Libre de Bruxelles. Their close and thorough reading has benefited the book. With the exception of the chapters on Germany and Austria, that were trans- lated by James Fearns (Germany) and Mel Greenwald (Austria), Maggie Oattes translated or corrected the entire book with great care and commitment. The title ‘project coordinator’ does not do justice to the importance of Anne Helfrich. She kept the project going, took care of all correspondence, paid the bills, gave the authors the warmest welcome, and remained cheerful throughout. She has been invaluable for the successful conclusion of this project and for keeping up our job satisfaction. niod-wartrauma-def3-mei.indd 9 31-5-2010 14:52:28 x | The Politics of War Trauma Last but not least, we want to thank our subsidizer, the Ministry of Health, Wel- fare and Sport, Department of Victims and Remembrance World War ii. Their generous grant made this pioneering project possible. We owe a debt of gratitude to Puck Huitsing in particular for her inspiring interest and her confidence in our work. Landmark 4 Brocken ® On the 17th of November, 2015, during the 38th UNESCO General Assembly, the 195 member states of the United Nations resolved to introduce a new title. As a result, Geoparks can be distinguished as UNESCO Global Geoparks. As early as 2004, 25 European and Chinese Geoparks had founded the Global Geoparks Network (GGN). In autumn of that year Geopark Harz · Braunschweiger Land · Ostfalen became part of the network. In addition, there are various regional networks, among them the European Geoparks Network (EGN). These coordinate international cooperation. 22 Königslutter 28 ® 1 cm = 26 km 20 Oschersleben 27 18 14 Goslar Halberstadt 3 2 1 8 Quedlinburg 4 OsterodeOsterodee a.H.a.Ha H.. 9 11 5 13 15 161 6 10 17 19 7 Sangerhausen Nordhausen 12 21 In the above overview map you can see the locations of all UNESCO Global Geoparks in Europe, including UNESCO Global Geopark Harz · Braunschweiger Land · Ostfalen and the borders of its parts. UNESCO-Geoparks are clearly defi ned, unique areas, in which geosites and landscapes of international geological importance are found. The purpose of every UNESCO-Geopark is to protect the geological heritage and to promote environmental education and sustainable regional development. Actions which can infl ict considerable damage on geosites are forbidden by law. A Highlight of a Harz Visit 1 The Brocken A walk up the Brocken can begin at many of the Landmark’s Geopoints, or one can take the Brockenbahn from Wernigerode or Drei Annen-Hohne via Schierke up to the highest mountain of the Geopark (1,141 meters a.s.l.).

  • Luxembourg Resistance to the German Occupation of the Second World War, 1940-1945
LUXEMBOURG RESISTANCE TO THE GERMAN OCCUPATION OF THE SECOND WORLD WAR, 1940-1945 by Maureen Hubbart A Thesis Submitted in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree MASTER OF ARTS Major Subject: History West Texas A&M University Canyon, TX December 2015 ABSTRACT The history of Luxembourg’s resistance against the German occupation of World War II has rarely been addressed in English-language scholarship. Perhaps because of the country’s small size, it is often overlooked in accounts of Western European History. However, Luxembourgers experienced the German occupation in a unique manner, in large part because the Germans considered Luxembourgers to be ethnically and culturally German. The Germans sought to completely Germanize and Nazify the Luxembourg population, giving Luxembourgers many opportunities to resist their oppressors. A study of French, German, and Luxembourgian sources about this topic reveals a people that resisted in active and passive, private and public ways. ii ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS I would like to thank Dr. Elizabeth Clark for her guidance in helping me write my thesis and for sharing my passion about the topic of underground resistance. My gratitude also goes to Dr. Brasington for all of his encouragement and his suggestions to improve my writing process. My thanks to the entire faculty in the History Department for their support and encouragement. This thesis is dedicated to my family: Pete and Linda Hubbart who played with and took care of my children for countless hours so that I could finish my degree; my husband who encouraged me and always had a joke ready to help me relax; and my parents and those members of my family living in Europe, whose history kindled my interest in the Luxembourgian resistance.

  • Danish Cold War Historiography
SURVEY ARTICLE Danish Cold War Historiography ✣ Rasmus Mariager This article reviews the scholarly debate that has developed since the 1970s on Denmark and the Cold War. Over the past three decades, Danish Cold War historiography has reached a volume and standard that merits international attention. Until the 1970s, almost no archive-based research had been con- ducted on Denmark and the Cold War. Beginning in the late 1970s, however, historians and political scientists began to assess Danish Cold War history. By the time an encyclopedia on Denmark and the Cold War was published in 2011, it included some 400 entries written by 70 researchers, the majority of them established scholars.1 The expanding body of literature has shown that Danish Cold War pol- icy possessed characteristics that were generally applicable, particularly with regard to alliance policy. As a small frontline state that shared naval borders with East Germany and Poland, Denmark found itself in a difficult situation in relation to the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) as well as the Soviet Union. With regard to NATO, Danish policymakers balanced policies of integration and screening. The Danish government had to assure the Soviet Union of Denmark’s and NATO’s peaceful intentions even as Denmark and NATO concurrently rearmed. The balancing act was not easily managed. A review of Danish Cold War historiography also has relevance for con- temporary developments within Danish politics and research. Over the past quarter century, Danish Cold War history has been remarkably politicized.2 The end of the Cold War has seen the successive publication of reports and white books on Danish Cold War history commissioned by the Dan- ish government.

Primarily through loans to build up the economy and diplomatic pressure, the United States and Great Britain helped to maintain an independent Austrian state and prevent an Anschluss or union with Germany from 1918 to 1934. In addition, this study examines the minority of Austrians who opposed an Anschluss . The three main groups of Austrians that supported independence were the Christian Social Party, monarchists, and some industries and industrialists. These Austrian nationalists cooperated with the Americans and British in sustaining an unwilling Austrian nation. Ultimately, the global depression weakened American and British capacity to practice dollar and pound diplomacy, and the popular appeal of Hitler combined with Nazi Germany’s aggression led to the realization of the Anschluss .

  • Reconstructions of the Past in Belgium and Flanders
Louis Vos 7. Reconstructions of the Past in Belgium and Flanders In the eyes of some observers, the forces of nationalism are causing such far- reaching social and political change in Belgium that they threaten the cohesion of the nation-state, and may perhaps lead to secession. Since Belgian independ- ence in 1831 there have been such radical shifts in national identity – in fact here we could speak rather of overlapping and/or competing identities – that the political authorities have responded by changing the political structures of the Belgian state along federalist lines. The federal government, the Dutch-speaking Flemish community in the north of Belgium and the French-speaking commu- nity – both in the southern Walloon region and in the metropolitan area of Brus- sels – all have their own governments and institutions.1 The various actors in this federal framework each have their own conceptions of how to take the state-building process further, underpinned by specific views on Belgian national identity and on the identities of the different regions and communities. In this chapter, the shifts in the national self-image that have taken place in Belgium during its history and the present configurations of national identities and sub-state nationalism will be described. Central to this chapter is the question whether historians have contributed to the legitimization of this evolving consciousness, and if so, how. It will be demonstrated that the way in which the practice of historiography reflects the process of nation- and state- building has undergone profound changes since the beginnings of a national his- toriography.
