  • Friendly Fire Project Examines How a Country Views Itself by How It Tells Its War Story, We Are Also Very Interested in What Other Countries Consume for Entertainment
00:00:00 Music Music Soft, melancholy, somewhat eerie music. 00:00:01 Adam Host If it feels like there are a lot of films about Stalingrad, you’re not Pranica wrong. A quick search in your movie streaming service of choice—or if you’re so lucky, a brick-and-mortar video store—will reveal ten of them. Although only one, to our knowledge, has a scene depicting a Rachel Weisz hand job. It’s enough film content to spin off a podcast of its own, and I’ve already pitched Earwolf a show about German/Russian World War II films with an emphasis on fighter plane aerodynamics/equestrian cavalry enclosures hosted by fifth-year college seniors from acting school with limb fractures called The Stalingrad Stall Stall Stallin’ Grad Cast Cast Cast. For comparison, there are only five more films made about Pearl Harbor, and that’s if you don’t disqualify the Michael Bay movie, which we do. This Stalingrad film is the most successful Russian film of all time, earning 51 million domestically in Russia and $68 million globally. And while the Friendly Fire project examines how a country views itself by how it tells its war story, we are also very interested in what other countries consume for entertainment. Stalingrad accomplishes both. But does that say anything about the importance of this battle in the story of World War II, and the historical record? Well, in our experience watching war films, sometimes quantity doesn’t equal quality. And this is a film that tries very hard to project quality.

  • Soil“ Traveling in Time and Space
„Soil“ Traveling in time and space Lecture for Writers for Europe Prague Session 2018 By Jochen Brunow Soil. When I first heard the title for the Prague session of Writers For Europe, I marveled at how wonderfully specific and inspiring it would be for writing a screenplay. And when I was asked to give the keynote speech a whole lot of associations and mental images rushed through my mind immediately — memories of very different movies popped up. Scenes and sequences dashed by, as well as the recollection of many personal experiences. All of mankind works on soil, names it and describes it in different ways. We walk on soil, explore and discover it. We feel the soil and touch soil, we dig deep into it and build on it. Soil has a smell, a color and a sound. It evokes names and pictures and even history. Therefore soil can be read like a book. Actually, I think soil might be one of the most central ideas and concepts in religion, mythology, spirituality, science, even in ideology and politics. And because of this, it is very present in all forms of art. Being faced with this enormous amount of content, I was worried about how to find a framework for my lecture. But since I am a writer and not a scientist, I will be speaking as a screenwriter to fellow screenwriters and filmmakers. In the following, I will approach the idea of soil as if my task was to write a screenplay about it. Whenever I think about writing a film on a certain topic, I start to ask myself questions.

  • The Living Weapon Monday, June 8, 2009 on PBS Pbs.Org/Americanexperience
The Living Weapon Monday, June 8, 2009 on PBS pbs.org/americanexperience You can't see it. You can't hear it. You can't smell it. Yet a biological weapon could decimate an entire city. On Monday, June 8, AMERICAN EXPERIENCE presents The Living Weapon, a harrowing tale of ambition, scientific discovery, and the lengths to which one man would go to protect his country. From producer John Rubin, this one-hour documentary offers an unprecedented look at more than two decades of closed-door meetings, secret test sites, determined scientists, and human subjects that attempted to turn some of the world's most potent germs into some of the world's most effective weapons. In 1942, the United States government, sanctioned by President Franklin Roosevelt, began a highly classified program to research and develop bioweapons - the first in a series of steps, motivated by fear of powerful enemies that brought the United States to a point of no return. "It was a turning point in the way America was willing to fight," says producer John Rubin. "Roosevelt's decision acknowledged the readiness to use a kind of weapon that military leaders had long shunned as dishonorable." "Today, perhaps more than ever, people are aware of what a biological attack could do to a city or a nation," says AMERICAN EXPERIENCE executive producer Mark Samels. "The program was, in many ways, a consequence of the mindset that scientific and medical advances could be turned on their heads to create massive destruction."
