A Promise for Excellence and Permanence Acres of wildlife habitat This year, Gallatin Valley Land Trust reaffirmed its commitment to excellence and permanence by becoming part of two national programs. In May, GVLT applied for renewal of our accredited status. Awarded by the independent Land Trust Accreditation Commission, the accreditation seal recognizes 42,160 land conservation organizations that meet national standards for excellence, uphold the public trust, and ensure that conservation efforts are permanent. GVLT was first awarded accredited status in 2008, and our five-year renewal will be formalized in early 2014. This year, GVLT also joined with over 400 land trusts from across the United States in forming Terrafirma, a captive insurance program that insures land trusts against the legal costs of defending conservation easements. Along with GVLT’s Stewardship Fund, this new program helps to safeguard GVLT’s conservation programs and Total acres protects the permanence of our efforts. protected

- page 7 - The Growth of National Trails Day Volunteers: thank you for your support

Every June for the last eighteen years, GVLT has led events to celebrate National Trails Day. Our event has steadily been growing, with the best turn-out yet in 2013. This year, more than 200 hard-working volunteers helped cut in new trails at the Highland Glen Nature Preserve and resurface trails near the Lindley Center. In the last five years nearly 700 National Trails Day volunteers have improved trails at Burke Park, East Gallatin Recreation Area, Story Mill Spur, Drinking Horse Mountain, Snowfill Recreation Area, and other locations on the Main Street to the Mountains trail system.

- page 9 - On Deck: closing the gap - a path to the “M”

When Chris Boyd founded our organization in 1990, the vision for GVLT was “Main Street to the Mountains” – connecting the core of downtown Bozeman with trails to public lands on both the north and south ends of town. We are much closer to realizing this vision with a new project: a shared-use pathway connecting existing trails near Story Mill Road to the “M” and Drinking Horse Mountain trailheads along Bridger Drive.

In early 2013, GVLT helped catalyze partners and - along with the Western Transportation Institute, City of Bozeman, and US Forest Service - led efforts to apply for $2.8 million in funding through the Federal Lands Access Program of the Western Federal Lands Highway Division (WFLHD). Our project was approved this fall, and now GVLT and partners are working to raise about $500,000 in local matching funds through the Bozeman Trails, Open Space and Parks Bond and other sources.

The path design and construction will be led by WFLHD, but GVLT and local Finding Your Way partners will continue to provide leadership and on-the-ground support.
