The question, however, remains as to what extent this report- ed scepticism truly reflects people’s opinions and feelings about Europe. We all consider it normal to cross borders within Europe, often while using the same money, as well as to take part in exchange programmes, invest in enterprises across Europe and appeal to European institutions if national regulations, for example, do not meet our expectations.

  • Variation in Singing Voice Quality . a Case-Study from Traditional
DOI: 10.17469/O2103AISV000011 PAOLO BRAVI Variation in singing voice quality. A case-study from traditional music of southern Marche In this paper a recording of two traditional stornellos performed by two non professional singers from southern Marche (Italy) has been analyzed. Three acoustic measures related to harsh voice quality – jitter, shimmer and harmonics-to-noise ratio (HNR) – have been examined in order to describe by means of quantitative descriptors the difference between the voices of the two singers and to investigate some prospective factors that can be related to the variability of their voice quality in the recorded performance. Key words: voice quality, singing voice, harsh voices, Central Italy traditional singers, ethno- musicology. 1. Introduction: voice quality in singing In vocal music, one of the main issue regarding score notation is that music symbols can express only the skeleton of a melody, whereas all the subtleties present in the real act of singing are hidden in the partiture (Stockmann, 1989; Ellington, 1992). The movements between and inside the notes may be of greater importance than the basic structure of a melody, but cannot be adequately described by standard musical notation. In particular, the so-called ‘timbre’ dimension – in the widest sense of the term – of the voice is not included in the score and depends almost completely on the specific characteristics and choices of the singer. One of the essential parts defining the timbral dimension of singing is voice quality, that has a major importance both as part of a musical style and as a crucial trait of a singer’s performative art.

  • An Overview of Recent Decades
Interdisciplinary Studies in Musicology 12,2012 © PTPN & Wydawnictwo Naukowe UAM, Poznań 2012 ALESSANDRO MASTROPIETRO Departament of Humanities, Catania University Contemporary Music in Central Italy: an Overview of Recent Decades ABSTRACT: The present article tries to make thematic the geographical plan of the present volume, by examining the major focal points of Contemporary Music in Central Italy which act as centres dissemi nating compositional trends through a long-established interest in recent music, as well as didactical structures and important teachers. Clearly, Rome is a more influential centre than Florence (where the endemic tendency of Florentine culture towards a sense of order, the settlement there of Dallapiccola, and the rise of a pioneering activity in the field of electronic music since the ‘60s are noteworthy); this is due to the teaching - through different generations - of Petrassi, Guaccero, Donatoni, Corghi and now Fedele, as well as the presence of many musical institutions, and the availability of artists and writers involved in exchanges and collaborations with composers. For this reason, many composers who were educated or active in Rome developed an outstanding - often prophetic - predilection for mix-media or theatrical works. After Bussotti, Guaccero, Macchi and Bertoncini, Giorgio Battistelli is a pivotal figure representing this trend in the next generation of composers; nonetheless an aptitude for it can be perceived also in other composers from both generations (Clementi, Pennisi and Renosto; Sbordoni, Lombardi, Rendine, D’Amico and De Rossi Re), including among the younger ones Silvia Colasanti, Roberta Vacca and Francesco Antonioni. In parallel, electronic music has been cultivated by Evangelisti and Branchi, as a way of renewing musical thought and language from their foundations: researches in the musical application of digital processing have been remarkable in Rome, along with experimentation in real time sound-generation and -transfoimation (Nottoli, Lupone, Di Scipio).

  • Science, Poetry, and Music for Landscapes of the Marche
Science, Poetry, and Music for Landscapes of the Marche Region, Italy: Communicating the Conservation of Natural Heritage Olivia Nesci1and Laura Valentini2 1 Department of Pure and Applied Sciences, University of Urbino Carlo Bo, Urbino (PU), 61029, Italy 5 2 Department of Biomolecular Sciences, University of Urbino Carlo Bo, Urbino (PU), 61029, Italy Correspondence to: Laura Valentini ([email protected]) Abstract. We present a method for educating the public about landscapes that uses artistic works to broaden the audience, entice people to learn about landscapes in a personal and human context, and thus encourage them to preserve the natural heritage. To this aim, we use narratives about a place in plain language accompanied by visual presentations, original poetry, 10 and ancient music. Several studies encourage to use art since it can help synthesize and convey complex scientific information and create a celebratory and positive atmosphere. Evidence suggests that the arts can deeply engage people by focusing on the emotions rather than relying only on comprehension, which is often emphasized in science communication. The multidisciplinary approach arouses an emotional and intellectual experience that enables a personal connection to the place. The work is part of a larger multidisciplinary project covering 20 sites in the Marche Region (Central Italy), which includes 15 scientific information on geological-geomorphological genesis, trekking itineraries, poetry, ancient music, video and cultural offerings. The project resulted in live multidisciplinary performances, a book, a DVD and a web site. To give a taste of how we work, among the many amazing landscapes of the Marche Region we focus here on three sites from the north, the centre and the south of the region: "The sea-cliff of San Bartolo", "The flatiron of Mount Petrano" and "The fault of Mount Vettore", chosen as examples for their different processes of genesis and evolution.
