  • The Crisis Years (1922-1927)
CHAPTER THREE: The Crisis Years (1922-1927) 'I will write a sad ballad to the uncelebrated poets. There are those who take their place in history, and there are those who make history. It is the latter I honour.' (Terzakis 1987: 76) I Bakhtin's dialogic approach can provide a valuable perspective on the biographical narrative, highlighting the multiplicity of situated sites within it, the corporeal nature of subjectivity and memory, and the writer-biographer's location in the writing process. In this chapter I have approached the narrative by constructing a broad historical and literary framework of the period and by exploring Alekos Doukas' letters and manuscript's in relation to the contexts of his locations. I have used Bakhtin's concept of the 'chronotope' in both its literary and extra- literary sense to historically position the texts under scrutiny. Genre is given attention as a 'master category of dialogism' which allows us to read the texts in relation to the changing genres of the period (Holquist 1990: 144). This offers biographical discourse a generic analysis of texts through a diachronic perspective and interplay of textual and non-textual mediations. The biographical self is not sculptured in a vacuum but in direct relation to others, much as a hologram appears in three-dimensional space through its placement within a surrounding field. Far from being a simple interaction of two fixed entities, the self/other relationship is dynamic and contested, giving rise to distinctive identities which are never entirely stable or static (Holquist 1990: 135)*. This relationship is another aspect of intertextuality, and a literary biography is nothing if not an exploration of this endless web of intertextual dialogue.

  • The Presence of CP Cavafy in Greek Education
The Presence of C. P. Cavafy in Greek Education: Landmarks and Gaps La presencia de C.P. Cavafis en la educación griega: paisajes y huecos. La presència de C.P. Kavafis en l’educació grega: paisatges i forats Sotiria Kalasaridou. Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, Greece. [email protected] https://orcid.org/0000-0002-7456-703X Abstract This article aims to highlight the crucial stages of C.P. Cavafy’s presence in education through textbooks about literature from 1930 until today. More specifically, the research is constructed around two areas: a) the fundamental role of literary criticism and how it was related to the introduction of C.P. Cavafy in education in 1930, b) the degree of osmosis between History of Greek Literature and Education. The methodological criteria of the research are drawn from different areas, such as: i) literary criticism, ii) history of education and educational policy, iii) history of textbook anthologies, and iv) poetry anthologies. During a course of eighty years, C. P. Cavafy is found in thirty- five textbooks, teachers’ textbooks and curricula; ‘Ithaka’ is the most anthologized poem — twelve times. The positive opinions by the critics and the momentum of school anthologies that tried a holistic approach to poetry defined the inclusion of C. P. Cavafy in the school anthologies during the educational reform of 1929-1932. The evaluation of Cavafy in the History of Modern Greek Literature by C. Th. Dimaras surpasses the efforts made by the critics of that time. Moreover, Linos Politis also holds a part of the restoration of C. P. Cavafy as far as the school textbooks are concerned, as his History of Modern Greek Literature, as well as his poetic anthology, determined the school literary canon from the days of the Restoration of Democracy (1974)1 until now.

  • Phd THESIS Politics, Media and Journalism in Greece
DUBLIN CITY UNIVERSITY SCHOOL OF COMMUNICATIONS Supervisor: Professor John Horgan PhD THESIS Politics, Media and Journalism in Greece By Antonis Skamnakis I hereby certify that this material, which I haw submit for assessment on the programme of study leading to the award of PkD is entirely my own work and haw not been taken from the work of others save and to the extent that such work has been cited and acknowledged within the text of my work Signed: 4 IDNO-c Acknowledgements The author would like to thank his daughter Xrena, his son Kyriakos and his wife Joanna for their support. He would like also to thank his colleagues and his supervisor Professor John Horgan. Politics, Media and Journalism in Greece By Antonis Skamnakis Abstract The aim of this thesis is to analyze the relationship between politics and media in Greece. The relations of the two fields are defined mainly by the underdevelopment of Greek capitalism. This fact had a decisive contribution in the delay of democratization of the political institutions but also in the delay of development of a massive press. During its emergence, the Greek press was an instrument for the propagatory of national ideas and supporting the movement for national liberation. Later it played an important role in the creation of a constitutional state. The press during that phase was not simply political, but a political institution of power. Even during the period of political divisions of the Greek political system, press functioned inside these divisions, not only by supporting but also by expressing either conservative or liberal political forces.
