o f I o w a o u r n a l o s to r a n d Po l iti cs by the editor the J i y , which is the best amon g histori cal journ als in the Middle
fi . West , con rm this estim ate I t is assumed by the com m itte e that the S ociety would not wish to u ndertake to pub

however desirable otherwise such a publication m ight be . It was hoped at first by the ch airm an that an appropria tion might be secured from the legislat u re to aid the S ociety in this undertakin g ' but further consideration convin ced him an d the rest o f the com mittee that such an if appropriation , even it could be secured , woul d limit the MAINE HISTORICAL SOCIETY . 1 9
o f o f scope the journ al , inasmu ch as articles a religious
and sectarian ch aracter would have to be excluded , or at least presented in a w ay that would divest them o f muc h
o f . ffi their historical value Another di culty , perhaps not insurm ountable , but still very great , besets the enterprise . S uch a journal as h as bee n contempl ated would require

The com mittee con esses its in ability to n am e any one com petent to un dertake these l abors who could be per su ade d to serve by the sm all sal ary which would be paid .
