Beim CHIO von Deutschland in Aachen oder im arabischen Raum gibt Thomas Dietz (52) den Hindernissen ein eigenes Gesicht, mit seinen Dekorationen nimmt er einem Parcours dieses Bedrohende an Höhe oder Weite. Er macht einen Parcours einladend. Als ehemaliger Springreiter kennt er auch die andere Seite - die des Sports. Er erinnert sich noch genau an jene Minuten im Sand vor dem Schloss Wocklum in Balve im Sauerland: „Als ich mit meinem Vater den Parcours für die erste Wertungsprüfung abging, sagte ich nur: Da komme ich nicht rüber, das ist ja Selbstmord. Lasst uns wieder verladen.“ Es war der Beginn der Deutschen Meisterschaft im Mai 1984, gleichzeitig Sichtung für die Bildung einer Olympia-Equipe für die anstehenden Sommerspiele in Los Angeles, „und entsprechend war auch der Parcours gebaut. Meister wurde Karsten Huck auf Calando, 1988 auf Nepomuk in Seoul Olympia-Dritter, vor dem Rheinländer lagen weiter der frühere Weltmeister und Olympiasieger Gerd Wiltfang, Wolfgang Brinkmann, 1988 Team-Olympiasieger, Peter Luther auf Livius, in Los Angeles Mannschafts-Olympiadritter, und der spätere dreimalige Weltmeister Franke Sloothaak. -
