Therefore, the analysis of such events, such as providing information for their potential hazards assessment, is a key element in coastal management. In this study, a preliminary assessment of flood vulnerability due to storms was performed in Rhodes Island, Greece. Firstly, storm events were defined in terms of significant wave height, peak period, and duration, and they were grouped by means of cluster analysis into five classes (from weak to extreme) reflecting the intensity of each event. Subsequently, flood hazard was assessed by using an empirical formula for wave run-up calculations on cross-shore profiles and storm surge data at the region. Finally, a Flood Vulnerability Index (FVI) was used for assessing vulnerability according to a scale from very low to very high. The most intense storms were found to occur in the eastern, southeastern, and southern part of the island. More than 60% of storms were classified as weak, while extreme events were found to occur with a frequency of less than 2.5%. Regarding flood hazard and vulnerability, the maximum values of wave run-up were calculated in the southeastern region, but the most vulnerable part was found to be the northwestern region, as the FVI was assessed as very high for weak and extreme events.

  • Monolithos Castle, Rhodes Island, Greece
Monolithos Castle, Rhodes island, Greece Monolithos Castle at the island of Rhodes in Greece Monolithos Castle is situated on Rhodes island, the largest of the Dodecanese islands located near the Aegean sea. The exotic location of the Rhodes island between the Greek mainland and the island of Cyprus makes it one of the popular tourist destinations in the world. Apart from these, there are a number of sites of historical and archeological importance that attract tourists. The Monolithos Castle is definitely one of the most popular places for sightseeing in Rhodes. The Monolithos Castle offers scenic views of the coastline. The location of the castle makes it a perfect place to bask in the bounties of nature. Climbing the rock to reach the castle is not as difficult as it appears. You need to climb some steps that pass through the lush green area. But, there are a few slippery steps, so you need to be careful. Even though the castle is small, yet if you have a close look, you will find that here are two hidden rooms. From the top you will be able to see courtyards dabbed in whitewash and decorated with geraniums, isolated beaches where people play games and splash in the waves, and stone houses with tiled roofs overlooking the great expanse of azure blue water that splashes upon the beach. These are the views of the nearby village that appears like an amphitheater. There are two small 15th century churches nearby, dedicated to Saint Agios Panteleimon and Saint Geroge. Both chapels are in ruins today.

Csabai (2008): First annotated checklist of Chironomidae of Rhodos, Greece (Insecta, Diptera). – Spixiana 31/2: 223-231 Chironomid fauna of Greek Aegean islands, an essential part of the biogeo- graphically important Mediterranean region, is almost unexplored, with only 36 species recorded prior to the present study. It is especially true for Dodecanese islands (6 recorded species). In 2007, chironomid larvae and exuviae were collected in Rhodos, the largest member of the Dodecanese islands. Thirty-four taxa were identified (8 Tanypodinae, 10 Orthocladiinae, 16 Chironominae). None of the pre- viously recorded taxa were found; thus all collected species proved to be new for the fauna of Rhodos. An actualized checklist for the Chironomidae of Rhodos is given based on the literature and results of recent investigations. Karavitis2 National Technical University of Athens, Chemical Engineering Department, Process Analysis and Plant Design Section, 9 Heroon Polytechniou, Zografou Campus, GR-15780, Athens, Greece ABSTRACT: Desalination powered by Renewable Energy Sources (RES) is presented in order to augment the water supply in the semi-arid region of Rhodes island.. The island of Rhodes was chosen as a case study as it relies mostly on the exploitation of groundwater resources and faces serious water shortage problems due to the aquifers depletion. Alternatives are discussed and compared in contrast to the construction of storage dams so as to meet the urban demand up to the year 2040. Results may indicate that by using also financial incentives and management approaches, desalination powered by RES could be an attractive and environmentally friendly option in an effort to solve problems related to water quantity and quality in semi-arid regions with adequate Renewable Energy potential. 1.

    - 133 - DESCRIPTION AND TAPHONOMIC INVESTIGATIONS OF NEOGENE PROBOSCIDEA FROM RHODOS, GREECE* bY THEODOROU, G.**, SPJELDNAES, N.***, HANKEN, N.-M.****, LAURITZEN, S.E.*****, VELITZELOS, E., ATHANASSIOU, A. & ROUSSIAKIS, S.** I. INTRODUCTION Anancus awemensis has been described from various Upper Pliocene localities in Greece (Fig. 1). In most earlier studies little stratigraphical information has been avail- able in connection with the individual discoveries, but there has been broad agreement thatA. awemensis is generally limited to the Pliocene. 11. MATERIAL Major road works were undertaken in 1992 and 1993 on the main road along the coast south of Apolakkia, involving the straightening out of bends and construction of some new branch roads. Several good sections through the delta plain and fluvial deposits of the Apolakkia Formation appeared in the new road cuttings, which could be up to 10-12 m high. Parts of two proboscidean skulls were found in two different fluvial deposits (Fig. 2). The best preserved skull, which was found by LAURITZEN & HANKEN (1992), was indentified as Anancus awernensis; the genus of the other skull could not be determined because it was highly fragmented and lacked any clear diagnositc characteristics. Small and large fragments of various mammalian bones (long bones, ribs, pelvis) were also found at the same localities, but these had unfortunately been so badly damaged during the road construction that it proved impossible to achieve indentification even to the genus level, since they lacked every diagnostic feature (i.e. epiphyses, etc.). Their only real diagnostic character was their general shape and size, which clearly indicated a proboscidean. Several of the bones were found in the rock waste dumped beside the road.
