Assessment of Wave Storm-Induced Flood Vulnerability in Rhodes Island, Greece
water Article Assessment of Wave Storm-Induced Flood Vulnerability in Rhodes Island, Greece Fragkiska-Karmela Gad * , Maria Chatzinaki, Dimitris Vandarakis , Chara Kyriakidou and Vasilios Kapsimalis Institute of Oceanography, Hellenic Centre for Marine Research (HCMR), 19013 Anavyssos P.C., Greece; [email protected] (M.C.); [email protected] (D.V.); [email protected] (C.K.); [email protected] (V.K.) * Correspondence: [email protected]; Tel.: +30-229-107-6378 Received: 31 August 2020; Accepted: 20 October 2020; Published: 23 October 2020 Abstract: Coastal areas are threatened by extreme meteorological phenomena, such as wave storms. Therefore, the analysis of such events, such as providing information for their potential hazards assessment, is a key element in coastal management. In this study, a preliminary assessment of flood vulnerability due to storms was performed in Rhodes Island, Greece. Firstly, storm events were defined in terms of significant wave height, peak period, and duration, and they were grouped by means of cluster analysis into five classes (from weak to extreme) reflecting the intensity of each event. Subsequently, flood hazard was assessed by using an empirical formula for wave run-up calculations on cross-shore profiles and storm surge data at the region. Finally, a Flood Vulnerability Index (FVI) was used for assessing vulnerability according to a scale from very low to very high. The most intense storms were found to occur in the eastern, southeastern, and southern part of the island. More than 60% of storms were classified as weak, while extreme events were found to occur with a frequency of less than 2.5%. Regarding flood hazard and vulnerability, the maximum values of wave run-up were calculated in the southeastern region, but the most vulnerable part was found to be the northwestern region, as the FVI was assessed as very high for weak and extreme events. -

Die Molluskenfauna Der Insel Rhodos 1
©Naturhistorisches Museum Wien, download unter www.biologiezentrum.at Ann. Naturhistor. Mus. Wien 80 681-780 Wien, November 1976 Die Molluskenfauna der Insel Rhodos 1. Teil In der Serie: Ergebnisse der von Dr. 0. PAGET und Dr. E. KRITSCHER auf Rhodos durchgeführten zoologischen Sammelreisen. XVII. Carrying Capacity Assessment for the Greek Islands of Kalymnos, Kos and Rhodes
Sustainable Tourism II 353 Carrying capacity assessment for the Greek islands of Kalymnos, Kos and Rhodes B. S. Tselentis1, D. G. Prokopiou1 & M. Toanoglou2 1Department of Maritime Studies, University of Piraeus, Greece 2University of Surrey, UK Abstract Carrying capacity assessment has become an indispensable tool for formulating policy and strategies in the tourist industry worldwide. It is well known that Greece depends heavily on the tourist trade, as this has, in recent years, become the main economic activity in many of the Greek islands. The transformation of local economies from primary and secondary production to tertiary has, over the years, substantially altered the business environment in which such an activity takes place. Many studies have shown that the tourist product is a blend of ecological, social and economic sub-systems, operable in the area of interest. For the Greek Islands, environment, both natural and man made, plays a leading role in the sustainable development of the industry. It is the purpose of this paper to apply the principles of carrying capacity assessment to three Greek islands, differing in their tourist development, in an effort to highlight the importance of such a tool in developing long-term sustainable policies for such communities. 1 Introduction The World Tourism Organisation (WTO) proposes the following definition of carrying capacity: “The maximum number of people that may visit a tourist destination at the same time, without causing destruction to the physical, economic, socio-cultural environment and an unacceptable decrease in the quality of visitors’ satisfaction” [1]. Today, controlling tourist growth has become a central policy issue for the tourist trade [2] and it is noteworthy that carrying capacity assessment has become an important tool for facilitating planning and developing policy in the industry [3]. -

Dodecanese’s enchanting beaches are one of the main attractions for millions of tourists every year. The Dodecanese island group is in the southeastern part of the Aegean Sea, the sunniest corner of Greece; it comprises twelve large islands and numerous smaller ones, each one with a different character. You will find fantastic beaches, archeological sites of great historical impor- tance, imposing Byzantine and Medieval monuments, traditional villag- es and architectural gems that date to the Italian Occupation. The Do- decanese have long been one of the most popular tourist destinations in the Mediterranean. Rhodes and Kos, are among the largest islands of the group and the two most popular ones. Karpathos, Patmos, Leros, Symi, Kalymnos, and Astypalaia have managed to keep their traditional flavour despite the fact that large numbers of tourists visit them. The smaller islands, with lower rates of growth, like Tilos, Nisyros, Leipsoi, Chalki, Kasos, Kastel- lorizo, Agathonisi, Telendos and Pserimos are a fine choice for relaxed and peaceful holidays. These islands have a rich and very long history. They have known pirate raids and have been occupied by the Knights Hospitaller, the Turks, and the Italians, to be eventually integrated in Greece in 1948. PATMOS 3. Skala, Patmos’ port.
