The Spatial Impact of Airbnb in Destination Management: Spotting the Differences Among the Aegean Islands
International Journal of Cultural and Digital Tourism Volume 6, Spring 2020 (Special Issue) Copyright © IACUDIT ISSN (Online): 2241-9705 ISSN (Print): 2241-973X The Spatial Impact of Airbnb in Destination Management: Spotting the differences among the Aegean Islands Mary Constantoglou1*, Vicky Katsoni2 and Ioulia Poulaki3 1University of the Aegean 2University of West Attica 3University of Patras Abstract The phenomenon of sharing economy as a disruptor in tourism industry is already long discussed. Particularly, Airbnb is recording enormous number of listings worldwide, offering alternative lodging proposals to each possible customer profile visiting any destination, from popular city centers till exotic islands. The impact of such business remains a critical issue among tourism stakeholders. Hotels are facing a strong competitor and destination managers are trying to balance the benefits and the costs that Airbnb generates in terms of economy, society and environment. It is evident that sharing economy contributes to regional development with income potentials for property holders, often provoking externalities that affect local residents and destinations’ environment. However, what should be taken under consideration is indeed the type of destination and the degree of its tourism development, that is to say, its life cycle stage. This paper aims to indicate the differences observed in three Aegean Islands and leisure destinations, when it comes to the allocation and density of Airbnb vis-à-vis Hotel beds, as a tool for destination managers to measure the spatial impact of Airbnb and adjust their strategy based on the life cycle stage of each island. The cartographic depiction of the spatial allocation of the beds per accommodation type using a geographic information system (GIS) is adding particular value to the proposed tool. -
Monolithos Castle, Rhodes Island, Greece
Monolithos Castle, Rhodes island, Greece Monolithos Castle at the island of Rhodes in Greece Monolithos Castle is situated on Rhodes island, the largest of the Dodecanese islands located near the Aegean sea. The exotic location of the Rhodes island between the Greek mainland and the island of Cyprus makes it one of the popular tourist destinations in the world. Apart from these, there are a number of sites of historical and archeological importance that attract tourists. The Monolithos Castle is definitely one of the most popular places for sightseeing in Rhodes. The Monolithos Castle offers scenic views of the coastline. The location of the castle makes it a perfect place to bask in the bounties of nature. Climbing the rock to reach the castle is not as difficult as it appears. You need to climb some steps that pass through the lush green area. But, there are a few slippery steps, so you need to be careful. Even though the castle is small, yet if you have a close look, you will find that here are two hidden rooms. From the top you will be able to see courtyards dabbed in whitewash and decorated with geraniums, isolated beaches where people play games and splash in the waves, and stone houses with tiled roofs overlooking the great expanse of azure blue water that splashes upon the beach. These are the views of the nearby village that appears like an amphitheater. There are two small 15th century churches nearby, dedicated to Saint Agios Panteleimon and Saint Geroge. Both chapels are in ruins today. -

Consolidated List of Article 13 Health Claims List of References Received by EFSA
Unit on Dietetic Products, Nutrition and Allergies Parma, 5 April 2011 Consolidated list of Article 13 health claims List of references received by EFSA Part 3 IDs 2001 – 3000 (This document contains the list of references for claims which the Commission has asked EFSA to prioritise in the evaluation.) BACKGROUND In accordance with Article 13 of Regulation (EC) No 1924/20061 Member States had provided the European Commission with lists of claims accompanied by the conditions applying to them and by references to the relevant scientific justification by 31 January 2008. EFSA has received from the European Commission nine Access databases with a consolidated list of 4,185 main health claim entries with around 10,000 similar health claims. The similar health claims were accompanied by the conditions of use and scientific references. The nine Access databases were sent in three batches - in July 2008, in November 2008 and in December 2008. Subsequently, EFSA combined the databases into one master database and re-allocated upon request of the Commission and Member States similar health claims which had been accidentally placed under a wrong main health claim entry (misplaced claims). During this process some Member States also identified a number of similar health claims which still needed to be submitted to EFSA (―missing claims‖). These similar claims were also added to the database. In March 2010, the European Commission forwarded to EFSA an addendum to the consolidated list containing an additional 452 main entry claims which have been added to the updated final database which was published on the EFSA website in May 2010 (containing 4,637 main entry claims). -

WATER SUPPLY MANAGEMENT APPROACHES USING RES IN RHODES ISLAND, GREECE E. Manoli, D. Assimacopoulos1 and C. A. Karavitis2 National Technical University of Athens, Chemical Engineering Department, Process Analysis and Plant Design Section, 9 Heroon Polytechniou, Zografou Campus, GR-15780, Athens, Greece ABSTRACT: Desalination powered by Renewable Energy Sources (RES) is presented in order to augment the water supply in the semi-arid region of Rhodes island.. The island of Rhodes was chosen as a case study as it relies mostly on the exploitation of groundwater resources and faces serious water shortage problems due to the aquifers depletion. Alternatives are discussed and compared in contrast to the construction of storage dams so as to meet the urban demand up to the year 2040. Results may indicate that by using also financial incentives and management approaches, desalination powered by RES could be an attractive and environmentally friendly option in an effort to solve problems related to water quantity and quality in semi-arid regions with adequate Renewable Energy potential. 1.
Description and Taphonomic Investigations of Neogene Proboscidea from Rhodos, Greece*
- 133 - DESCRIPTION AND TAPHONOMIC INVESTIGATIONS OF NEOGENE PROBOSCIDEA FROM RHODOS, GREECE* bY THEODOROU, G.**, SPJELDNAES, N.***, HANKEN, N.-M.****, LAURITZEN, S.E.*****, VELITZELOS, E., ATHANASSIOU, A. & ROUSSIAKIS, S.** I. INTRODUCTION Anancus awemensis has been described from various Upper Pliocene localities in Greece (Fig. 1). In most earlier studies little stratigraphical information has been avail- able in connection with the individual discoveries, but there has been broad agreement thatA. awemensis is generally limited to the Pliocene. 11. MATERIAL Major road works were undertaken in 1992 and 1993 on the main road along the coast south of Apolakkia, involving the straightening out of bends and construction of some new branch roads. Several good sections through the delta plain and fluvial deposits of the Apolakkia Formation appeared in the new road cuttings, which could be up to 10-12 m high. Parts of two proboscidean skulls were found in two different fluvial deposits (Fig. 2). The best preserved skull, which was found by LAURITZEN & HANKEN (1992), was indentified as Anancus awernensis; the genus of the other skull could not be determined because it was highly fragmented and lacked any clear diagnositc characteristics. Small and large fragments of various mammalian bones (long bones, ribs, pelvis) were also found at the same localities, but these had unfortunately been so badly damaged during the road construction that it proved impossible to achieve indentification even to the genus level, since they lacked every diagnostic feature (i.e. epiphyses, etc.). Their only real diagnostic character was their general shape and size, which clearly indicated a proboscidean. Several of the bones were found in the rock waste dumped beside the road.
