    CHAPTER 1 THE CALIFORNIA FLORA The Californian Floristic Province California is a large state with a complex topography and a great diversity of climates and habitats,resulting in a very large assemblage of plant species that vary in size and include both the world’s largest trees and some of the smallest and most unique plant species. In order to create manageable units for plant investigations, botanists have divided the continental landform into geographic units called floristic provinces. These units reflect the wide variations in natural landscapes and assist botanists in predicting where a given plant might be found. Within the borders of California, there are three floristic provinces, each extending beyond the state’s political boundaries. The California Floristic Province includes the geographi- cal area that contains assemblages of plant species that are more or less characteristic of California and that are best de- veloped in the state.This province includes southwestern Ore- gon and northern Baja California but excludes certain areas of the southeastern California desert regions, as well as the area of the state that is east of the Sierra Nevada–Cascade Range axis (map 1).The flora of the desert areas and those east of the Sierra Nevada crest are best developed outside the state, and therefore, parts of the state of California are not in the Cali- fornia Floristic Province. The Great Basin Floristic Province includes some of the area east of the Sierra Nevada and some regions in the northeastern part of the state, although some botanists consider the latter area to belong to another distinct floristic province, the Columbia Plateau Floristic Province.

New Year and new gardening season comes and my new catalogue goes to you. It is a little shorter than usually - not for shortage of items includable (with pain in heart I striped out many names) but this summer I want to rebuild my bulb shed and it will limit my possibilities to harvest bulbs and to work with them. Last summer was very busy year. I rebuilt one of my greenhouses - it was very nervous process due shortage of workers (three teams were changed), I was forced to dig out all bulbs, to change soil - but now working in it is much more comfortable. I and my wife Guna organized for the first time “Open door days” and we had 18 visitors from Britain, arranged programm including lectures, visits of gardens, museum, nature, Opera etc. All visitors were very satisfied with visit. Sorry, this season we can’t to arrange OPEN DOOR DAYS due my lecture tour in North America and expedition plans. But I’m planning repeat such days in future, too. Last season Mrs. Kristl Walek from Canada (Gardens North – Seeds from the world) in her catalogue revealed the fact that I had been bearing in my mind an idea about a book on bulbs and my experience with them.

However, any character (or tree) conflict in a dataset allows the exploration of support for various evolutionary hypotheses. Although data-display network approaches exist, biologists cannot easily and routinely use them to compute rooted phylogenetic networks on real datasets containing hundreds of taxa. Here, we constructed an original neighbour-net for a large dataset of Asparagales to highlight the aspects of the resulting network that will be important for interpreting phylogeny. The analyses were largely conducted with new data collected for the same loci as in previous studies, but from different species accessions and greater sampling in many cases than in published analyses. The network tree summarised the majority data pattern in the characters of plastid sequences before tree building, which largely confirmed the currently recognised phylogenetic relationships. Most conflicting signals are at the base of each group along the Asparagales backbone, which helps us to establish the expectancy and advance our understanding of some difficult taxa relationships and their phylogeny.

    OPEN ACCESS JCTS Report SERIES B Evidence for Holobaraminic Status of the Verbenaceae (Verbena Family) R.W. Sanders Core Academy of Science, Dayton, TN 37321 Abstract The baraminic status of the Verbenaceae s. str. was investigated using baraminic distance correlations, bootstrap analysis, and multidimensional scaling coordinates. Data were obtained from personal observations and the literature for 80 characters in 25 genera of the Verbenaceae and 19 genera representing 8 near and far outgroup families. Results showed continuity among members of the Verbenaceae and discontinuity of the Verbenaceae from all remaining families, supporting the holobaraminic status of the family. The hypothesis that baramins approximate taxonomic families is corroborated, as is the distinction of the Verbenaceae s. str. from the Lamiaceae, including the subfamilies that have been transferred from the Verbenaceae s. l. to the Lamiaceae by recent cladistic and molecular analyses.
