Ecological Response of Some Iris L. Taxa (Iridaceae) in Turkey

TAXA (IRIDACEAE) IN TURKEY 1 2 NEZAHAT KANDEMIR*, ALI ÇELIK AND ABDULKADIR SÜRÜCÜ Department of Biology, Education Faculty, Amasya University, Amasya-Turkey Key words: Iris taxa, Endemic, Rare, Ecological properties, Relationship Abstract Ecological relationships of some Iris taxa belonging to subgenera Hermodactyloides (I. danfordiae, I. histrio subsp. aintabensis, I. histrio subsp. histrio, I. reticulata, I. bakeriana, I. pamphylica) and Scorpiris (I. aucheri and I. persica) have been compared and relationships between taxa have been determined. These taxa are geophytes and flower in Spring. I. danfordiae, I. pamphylica and subsp. aintabensis are endemic to Turkey. I. reticulata and I. persica have widespread distribution while I. aucheri, subsp. aintabensis, subsp. histrio, I. pamphylica and I. bakeriana have restricted distribution in Turkey. Soil samples of the taxa were collected during flowering periods and physical and chemical properties (texture class, total salinity %, pH, CaCO3 %, organic matter %, N %, P kg/da, K kg/da, Ca , Mg, Mn, Cu, Fe and Zn ppm) were determined. The correlations between the soil analyses and taxa were evaluated using regression analysis. The P and CaCO3 values were found to be more effective than the other soil factors in the distributions of investigated taxa. Introduction Iris L. is one of the largest genus of Iridaceae family and comprises over 300 species in the world. They have been distributed in the Northern Hemisphere (Yu et al. 2009). THE BULB NEWSLETTER Number 35 July-September 2001 Amana lives, long live Among! ln the Kew Scientist, Issue 19 (April 2001), Kew's Dr Mike Fay reports on the molecular work that has been carried out on Among. This little tulip«like eastern Asiatic group of Liliaceae that we have long grown and loved as Among (A. edulis, A. latifolla, A. erythroniolde ), but which took a trip into the genus Tulipa, should in fact be treated as a distinct genus. The report notes that "Molecular data have shown this group to be as distinct from Tulipa s.s. [i.e. in the strict sense, excluding Among] as Erythronium, and the three genera should be recognised.” This is good news all round. I need not change the labels on the pots (they still labelled Among), neither will i have to re~|abel all the as Erythronlum species tulips! _ Among edulis is a remarkably persistent little plant. The bulbs of it in the BN garden were acquired in the early 19605 but had been in cultivation well before that, brought back to England by a plant enthusiast participating in the Korean war. Although not as showy as the tulips, they are pleasing little bulbs with starry white flowers striped purplish-brown on the outside. It takes a fair amount of sun to encourage them to open, so in cool temperate gardens where the light intensity is poor in winter and spring, pot cultivation in a glasshouse is the best method of cultivation. With the extra protection and warmth, the flowers will open out almost flat. -

The WSM was moved to a new venue at the Wyndham hotel in Lisle, IL this year and from all reports, the change worked for all involved. We had excellent attendance and the speakers all came through with excellent presentations. For those MRHS members who could not attend, all is not lost as we have presentation summaries in this issue of Hosta Leaves. The 2012 edition of the Winter Scientific is set for Saturday, January 21st. The folks in the Wisconsin hosta societies are working hard on putting together a wonderful convention schedule for the weekend of July 7-9th in Madison, Wis. The Madison area is not only beautiful to visit but it is home to some enthusiastic hostaphiles with truly fantastic gar- dens. This convention is within easy driving distance for many of our members who have never treated themselves to a convention. Why not this year? I have a major concern about the lack of response to the need for a local society to host the 2013 and 2014 MRHS conventions. -

Acta Universitatis Upsaliensis. Comprehensive Summaries of Uppsala Dissertations from the Faculty of Science and Technology 911. 33 pp. Uppsala. ISBN 91-554-5814-9 This thesis concerns the history and the intrafamilial delimitations of the plant family Colchicaceae. A phylogeny of 73 taxa representing all genera of Colchicaceae, except the monotypic Kuntheria, is presented. The molecular analysis based on three plastid regions—the rps16 intron, the atpB- rbcL intergenic spacer, and the trnL-F region—reveal the intrafamilial classification to be in need of revision. The two tribes Iphigenieae and Uvularieae are demonstrated to be paraphyletic. The well-known genus Colchicum is shown to be nested within Androcymbium, Onixotis constitutes a grade between Neodregea and Wurmbea, and Gloriosa is intermixed with species of Littonia. Two new tribes are described, Burchardieae and Tripladenieae, and the two tribes Colchiceae and Uvularieae are emended, leaving four tribes in the family. At generic level new combinations are made in Wurmbea and Gloriosa in order to render them monophyletic. The genus Androcymbium is paraphyletic in relation to Colchicum and the latter genus is therefore expanded. -

Bou-Hamdan (Iridaceae) endemic to Lebanon added to the Lebanese flora Abstract Volume 4 Issue 6 - 2019 Fifteen new world record Crocus baalbekensis var. decorus, fluctus, flavo-album, 1 2 makniensis, youninensis, rasbaalbekensis, rihaensis, shaathensis, shlifensis, tnaiyetensis, Khodr Addam, Mounir Bou-Hamdan, Jihad subsp. ahlansis, anthopotamus, fakihansis, harbatansis, and rassomensis, joined the Takkoush,3 Kamal Hout4 Lebanese flora and particularly the Iridaceae family. They were found in Baalbek-Hermel 1Head, Integrative and Environmental Research Center, AUL from North Baalbek to Hermel. All of them display C. Baalbekensis but vary in many Beirut, Lebanon 2 taxonomic details. ISSR analysis of Fritillaria dagana , endangered ornamental geophyte from the Sayan Mountains, regenerated through direct gemmogenesis from bulb scale tissue was performed. More informative electrophoresis profile with clear and distinct bands was obtained at amplification with (CAC)3GC primer at 56 ºC annealing. The genetic fidelity of F.dagana regenerants to maternal plants was confirmed. 1 Introduction The genus Fritillaria L. (Liliaceae) presents ephemeral bulbous plants and comprises more than 150 species distributed within the Northern Hemisphere with a pronounced center of diversity in southwestern and Himalayan Asia [1]. Twelve of fritillaria species occur in the territory of Russia, therewith five of them are listed in the Red Data Book of the Russian Federation [2] with the status of rare species. Since many natural species of the genus Fritillaria are endangered due to irregular gathering the bulbs and flowering shoots, it is necessary to find new effective approaches for their conservation. Previously we developed the protocol of clonal micropropagation of local endemic Fritillaria sonnikovae Schaulo and A. Erst from West Sayan for creation of in vitro Fritillaria collection [3]. Fritillaria dagana Turcz. ex Trautv. is an endemic species listed in the Red Data Book of the Russian Federation [2] with the status of a rare species (3a) which occurs in certain areas of Siberia, East Sayan and Southern Baikal. -

Again, we are coming to you with a new catalogue and again we are including many new varieties in it, probably not so many as we would like, but our stocks do not increase as fast as the demand for our bulbs. We hope for many more novelties in the next catalogue. Last season we had one more successful expedition – we found and collected 3 juno irises never before cultivated (we hope that they will be a good addition to our Iris collection) and many other nice plants, too. In garden we experienced a very difficult season. The spring came very early – in the first decade of April the temperature unexpectedly rose up to +270 C, everything came up, flowered and finished flowering in few days and then during one day the temperature fell as low as –80 C. A lot of foliage was killed by a returned frost. As a result the crop of bulbs was very poor. The weather till the end of June was very dry – no rain at all, only hot days followed by cold nights. But then it started to rain. There were days with the relative air humidity up to 98%. The drying of harvested bulbs was very difficult. I was forced to clean one of my living rooms in my house, to heat it and to place there the boxes with Allium and Tulipa bulbs to save them from Penicillium. -

I HAVE BEEN DIAGNOSED WITH BOWEL AND LIVER CANCER AND HAVE JUST STARTED A FAIRLY AGGRESSIVE REGIME OF CHEMOTHERAPY WHICH, WHILST UNABLE TO CURE ME, WILL AT LEAST ENABLE ME TO KEEP GOING AS LONG AS POSSIBLE. I DON’T KNOW YET WHAT SIDE EFFECTS I WILL SUFFER FROM BUT AM HOPING FOR THE BEST. WE ARE BOTH TRYING TO BE VERY POSITIVE, CHEERFUL AND CARRYING ON REGARDLESS. IT LIKES TO BE POT BOUND AS YOU CAN SEE, AND THE LEAVES ONLY APPEAR AFTER IT HAS FINISHED FLOWERING, THEY ARE QUITE LONG STRAP SHAPED AND BRIGHT GREEN WITH A VERY ATTRACTIVE DARK RED MARKING ON THE UNDERSIDE THERE ARE SO MANY REALLY INTERESTING AND ATTRACTIVE BULBOUS PLANTS FROM SOUTH AFRICA, I CANNOT UNDERSTAND WHY WE DON’T GROW MORE OF THEM IN OUR GARDENS, MANY OF THEM
