INTRODUCTION Even though quite a numberof molluscanspecies has been reported from Vietnam by now, that part of the fauna cannot yet be considered well-known. Only half the material collected during two surveys (Vermeulen & Whitten, 1998; Maassen, 2003) in northern Vietnam, and consisting of about 310 species, couldbe identified.This does not mean that the other half consists of that but number of species are new to science, quite a new ones may be expected, in particular amongst the minute snails. Formerly, small gastropods were described sometimes without any figures (especially by Von Moellendorff), or with illustrations such small scale that characteristic details at a are not or hardly visible. Only by studying the type specimens of all congeneric species from a particular region their be verified then. Snails were collected monthly during the study period and sampled using a combination of indirect litter sample methods and timed direct search. Snails collected were kept in labeled specimen vials and transported to the National Museums of Kenya for identification using keys and reference collection. In order to understand environmental variables that affect soil snail abundance; canopy, soil pH and temperature was measured per plot while humidity and rainfall data was obtained from the nearest weather stations to the study sites. A total of 2881 snail specimens (29 species from 10 families) were recorded. The families Subulinidae, Charopidae and Urocyclidae were found to be dorminant. The most abundant species was Opeas lamoense (12% of the sample). -

It included 47 locali- ties throughout the country. The surveyed invertebrate groups included slugs and snails (Gastropoda), dragonflies (Odonata), grasshoppers (Orthoptera), true bugs (Heteroptera), ants (Formicidae), butterflies (Lepidoptera) and some coleopterans (Staphylinidae: Pselaphinae). Data on the visited localities, identi- fied species and their conservation status are presented. In total, 316 species of 209 genera and 68 families were recorded. Fifty species were identified as potential indicator species for this wetland habitat type. The highest species richness (with more than 50 species) was observed in wetlands near Marino pole (Plovdiv District) and Karaisen (Veliko Tarnovo District). Specifically, garbage is defined as urban (commercial and residential) solid waste from municipalities in Hawaii, excluding incinerator ash and collections of agricultural waste and yard waste. Regulated (domestic) garbage refers to articles generated in Hawaii that are restricted from movement to the continental United States under various quarantine regulations established to prevent the spread of plant pests (including insects, disease, and weeds) into areas where the pests are not prevalent. -

HEIKE KAPPES Abstract: Hitherto unpublished field occurrences of Ambigolimax valentianus (FÉRUSSAC 1823) (syn. Lehman- nia valentiana), mainly from North Rhine-Westphalia (NRW) and Belgium, are presented. The originally Medi- terranean species is naturalized in the Netherlands, Belgium, and NRW. Variability in coloration, potential taxo- nomic issues and possible confoundings with A. nyctelius (BOURGUIGNAT 1861) are discussed. Venette & Margaret Larson Department of Entomology, University of Minnesota St. Paul, MN 55108 September 29, 2004 Introduction The giant African snail, Achatina fulica, occurs in a large number of countries around the world, but all of the countries in which it is established have tropical climates with warm, mild year-round temperatures and high humidity. The snail has been introduced purposefully and accidentally to many parts of the world for medicinal purposes, food (escargot), and for research purposes (Raut and Barker 2002). In many instances, the snail has escaped cultivation and established reproductive populations in the wild. In Florida and Queensland, established populations were eradicated (Raut and Barker 2002). Where it occurs, the snail has the potential to be a significant pest of agricultural crops. It is also an intermediate host for several animal pathogens. As a result, this species has been listed as one of the 100 worst invasive species in the world. Figure 1. Giant African Snail (Image courtesy of USDA-APHIS). Established populations of Achatina fulica are not known to occur in the United States (Robinson 2002). Because of its broad host range and geographic distribution, A. fulica has the potential to become established in the US if accidentally or intentionally introduced.
