Catalan Modernism and Vexillology
Catalan Modernism and Vexillology Sebastià Herreros i Agüí Abstract Modernism (Modern Style, Modernisme, or Art Nouveau) was an artistic and cultural movement which flourished in Europe roughly between 1880 and 1915. In Catalonia, because this era coincided with movements for autonomy and independence and the growth of a rich bourgeoisie, Modernism developed in a special way. Differing from the form in other countries, in Catalonia works in the Modern Style included many symbolic elements reflecting the Catalan nationalism of their creators. This paper, which follows Wladyslaw Serwatowski’s 20 ICV presentation on Antoni Gaudí as a vexillographer, studies other Modernist artists and their flag-related works. Lluís Domènech i Montaner, Josep Puig i Cadafalch, Josep Llimona, Miquel Blay, Alexandre de Riquer, Apel·les Mestres, Antoni Maria Gallissà, Joan Maragall, Josep Maria Jujol, Lluís Masriera, Lluís Millet, and others were masters in many artistic disciplines: Architecture, Sculpture, Jewelry, Poetry, Music, Sigillography, Bookplates, etc. and also, perhaps unconsciously, Vexillography. This paper highlights several flags and banners of unusual quality and national significance: Unió Catalanista, Sant Lluc, CADCI, Catalans d’Amèrica, Ripoll, Orfeó Català, Esbart Català de Dansaires, and some gonfalons and flags from choral groups and sometent (armed civil groups). 2019.09.19 Lecture Notes 1:00 Lecture 4 – Warped Edibles [ Hiroshi Teshigahara film: ch.7 – Casa Batlló ] Last week, we looked at Gaudí’s equilibrated structures that he developed from a decade long study beginning in 1898, of his tensile stereo-static model. Next week, we will see his decade long search for natural form in his work on the Nativity Façade of Sagrada Familia, which led to the development of warped surfaces (Rovira Rabassa class in warped surfaces/perspectival study) in his work after 1898. For me personally, the breadth of his originality and creativity was best expressed in this period, when he returned to the traditional Catalan brickwork techniques, to develop new combinations and complexities of form, which we will look at today. In 1892, José María Bocabella, the founder of Sagrada Familia, died. A large anonymous donation was made to the church, of which Gaudí was encouraged to spend it as quickly as he could on the construction. And so began, nearly a decade long study and execution of the sculpted natural forms comprising the Nativity Façade, as if icing on the cake. Gaudí, named the architect of the church in 1883, had finally reached the point, where he was given creative freedom and he took full advantage to express his vision for The Cathedral of the Poor (Joaquim Mir, 1898). In the fields next to the church, sculptors carved away at white stones laid out like hallucinatory sugar cubes, while hungry families begged for food in its shadow. A year later, as if to be punished by God for his gluttonous reverie, his good friend and religious mentor, Bishop Grau dies. -

ART & MATHEMATICS IN ANTONI GAUDÍ’S ARCHITECTURE: “LA SAGRADA FAMÍLIA” LORENZI Marcella Giulia (I), FRANCAVIGLIA Mauro, (I) Abstract. We shortly discuss the work of the great Catalan Architect Antoni Gaudí – and especially his masterpiece “La Sagrada Família” – in relation with the Geometry used by him therein to create his revolutionary projects, as well as the relations that existed at the turn of XX Century between the development of new ideas in Mathematics and Physics (Riemannian Geometry, Relativity, Fractals, Topology) and the development of new forms of Art (Cubism, Art Nouveau, Modernism). We also discuss the “pseudo-magic square” that decorates the façade of “La Sagrada Família”. Key words. “Architecture, although it depends on Mathematics, nevertheless it is a flattering Art, that by no means wants to be distasteful: even if many of its rules follow the dictates [of Mathematics], when its observed demonstrations result to be offensive for the sight, it changes them, abandons them and eventually contradicts the same; so that, to know what an Architect should observe, it will not be unfruitful to see the real scope of Architecture, as well as its way of proceeding”.
