3 Centro Mexicano para la Filantropía Annual Report 2020

Message from the President of the Board of Directors With great enthusiasm, I took over the presidency of the Board of Directors of the Mexican Center for Philanthropy (Cemefi) since March, when we had prepared the inauguration of The House of Philanthropy and Corporate Social Responsibility, which could not be carried out due to the “stay home” instruction.

This is how 2020 started and took us all by surprise. The effects of the pandemic are widespread and overwhelming. This year, the relevance of all civil society organizations (CSOs) and socially responsible companies has become evident.

It has also been a very satisfying period. I have come across highly committed counselors, willing to contribute their time and talents to this institution. In particular, I thank the members of the Executive Committee, because, each one has agreed to head a committee in which other advisers and experts participate. Together we have analyzed in depth how valid our purpose is as an organization and designed great plans for the future.

Everything that has been achieved would not have been possible without Cemefi’s committed operational team. The results presented in this report are achievements possible thanks to their work, led by Jorge Villalobos, whom I admire and appreciate. I have enjoyed and learned a lot from him while sharing the last year of his presidency.

The pandemic taught us that we are all in the same boat, and solidarity has taken on innovative and inspiring faces. I think I am not wrong in saying that, civil society has proven to be up to the task. There are, for example, the initiatives to support doctors and nurses, elderly people, children, sick people, those with disabilities and anyone who, due to their vulnerable situation, has needed a hand.

Think of all the pantries that came to those who were left without income. Cemefi led one of these efforts, the FOODFundMx, an initiative with which we supported more than 7,000 families with an emergency income to buy basic pantries. This initiative was only possible with the support of countless donors and the participation of more than 300 operators, all over the country, who are close to the affected families. Without a doubt, a living and committed social fabric is much more powerful and effective than the most terrible of viruses.

We were able to take advantage of technology to migrate all of our services to be provided online. We had more than 60 webinars with more than 7,000 participants connected. Our corporate social responsibility events and Cemefi´s Annual Meeting were successfully carried out virtually, giving many more people the opportunity to participate, especially those who live outside of México City.

Another surprise during this pandemic was that most of the initiatives were carried out through alliances. As we learned to join forces, we were strengthened as a sector. The challenge demands that we continue creating synergies, learning how others are solving problems and reinventing ourselves to face the future with a shared vision and a common plan.

Together, the Board of Directors and the Operational Team, have created great plans for Cemefi´s future. We continue promoting and articulating citizen participation, improving and strengthening our services for our members, so they will find greater added value by being part of our institution.

Message from the Executive President

The year 2020 brought great challenges for the philanthropic sector and for corporate social responsibility. The coronavirus pandemic forced civil society organizations (CSOs) and companies to seek new ways to achieve sustainability in order to continue operating. For the Mexican Center for Philanthropy (Cemefi), the articulation and coordination with various social actors also represented a challenge.

To respond to the emergency, the FOODFundMx initiative was launched with the aim of addressing the food crisis that arose from unemployment as a result of the confinement. After its launch in April, the project closed the year raising more than 25 million pesos from donations from companies, donor foundations and citizens. Cemefi´s Regional Allies and more than 300 members throughout the country, made the operation possible and acted as guarantors to deliver the aid to more than 7,000 families.

Starting in March, Cemefi’s staff went to work from home, however, the association continued offering services to CSOs and companies, implementing numerous webinars and holding institutional events online. Today, more than ever, unity is strength, and we are sure that an organized civil society is strengthened to the extent that it links with each other and aligns itself with other social actors.

For this purpose, the House of Philanthropy and Corporate Social Responsibility was constructed. This is a meeting space whose official opening was scheduled for March 2020, but due to the pandemic it was postponed until sanitary conditions allow it. Cemefi´s new headquarters await its premiere, while the institution advances in its natural process of change.

At the end of 2019, I had announced my intention to retire in 2021. After more than three decades serving the association and as its Executive President since 1995. I hand over the responsibility of carrying out Cemefi’s mission to Ricardo Bucio Mújica, wishing him a successful management.

Saying goodbye is not the right thing to do, because the honor of serving society all these years from Cemefi has left me with enormous lessons and close friends in the civil society sector, in the CSOs and among socially responsible companies, with whom I will continue to be in contact.

I want to thank so much all the people with whom I have walked this journey, and especially those who have been my teammates, advisors and allies in the country and in other countries.

Thanks.

Jorge V. Villalobos G.

Report of the independent auditors to the Assembly of Associates of the Mexican Center for Philanthropy, A. C.

Opinion

We have audited the attached financial statements of the Mexican Center for Philanthropy, A.C. (the Association), which include the balance sheets as of December 31, 2020 and 2019, the statements of activities and cash flows, corresponding to the years that ended on those dates, as well as a summary of significant accounting policies and other explanatory information.

In our opinion, the accompanying financial statements present fairly, in all material respects, the financial situation of Mexican Center for Philanthropy, A.C. as of December 31, 2020 and 2019, as well as its results and cash flows corresponding to the years that ended on those dates, in accordance with the Mexican Financial Information Standards (NIF).

Opinion Basis

We conduct our audits in accordance with International Standards on Auditing (ISA). Our responsibilities under those standards are further explained in the Auditor’s Responsibilities for the Audit of the Financial Statements section of our report. We are independent from the Association, in accordance with the Code of Ethics for Accounting Professionals of the International Ethics Standards Council for Accountants (IESBA Code of Ethics) and with the one issued by the Mexican Institute of Public Accountants (Code of Ethics of the IMCP), and we have complied with other ethical responsibilities, in accordance with the IESBA Code of Ethics and the IMCP Code of Ethics.

We believe that the audit evidence we have obtained provides a sufficient and appropriate basis for our opinion.

Responsibilities of the Association’s administration and those charged with governance in relation to the financial statements

Management is responsible for the preparation and fair presentation of the accompanying financial statements in accordance with the FRS, as well as the internal control that the Association’s management deems necessary to allow the preparation of financial statements free of material errors due to fraud or error.

In preparing the financial statements, management is responsible for evaluating the Association’s ability to continue as a going concern, revealing, as appropriate, matters related to the going concern and using the going concern accounting principle, except if the administration intends to liquidate the Association or stop its operations, or there is no other realistic alternative.

Those charged with governance of the Association are responsible for overseeing the financial reporting process of the Association.

Responsibility of the independent auditors in relation to the audit of the financial statements

Our objectives are to obtain reasonable assurance that the financial statements as a whole are free from material misstatements, due to fraud or error, and to issue an audit report containing our opinion. Reasonable assurance is a high level of assurance, but it does not guarantee that an audit conducted in accordance with the ISAs will always detect a material error where it exists. Errors may be due to fraud or error and are considered material if, individually or in the aggregate, they can reasonably be expected to influence the economic decisions that users make

22 Annual Report 2020 Centro Mexicano para la Filantropía

based on the financial statements.

As part of an audit performed in accordance with the ISAs, we exercise professional judgment and maintain professional skepticism throughout the planning and conduct of the audit. We also:

• We identify and assess the risks of material misstatement of the financial statements, due to fraud or error, design and apply audit procedures to respond to such risks, and obtain audit evidence that is sufficient and appropriate to provide the basis for our opinion. The risk of not detecting a material misstatement due to fraud is higher than in the case of a material misstatement due to error, as fraud may involve collusion, falsification, deliberate omissions, intentionally misstatements, or circumvention of internal control.

• We obtain knowledge of the internal control relevant to the audit, in order to design audit procedures that are appropriate based on the circumstances and not in order to express an opinion on the effectiveness of the Association’s internal control.

• We evaluate the adequacy of the accounting policies applied and the reasonableness of the accounting estimates, and the corresponding information disclosed by the Administration.

• We conclude on the appropriateness of the Administration’s use of the going concern accounting standard and, based on the audit evidence obtained, we conclude on whether or not there is a material uncertainty related to events or conditions that may generate significant doubts about the ability of the Association to continue as a going concern. If we conclude that there is a material uncertainty, we are required to draw attention in our audit report to the relevant information disclosed in the financial statements or, if such disclosures are not adequate, to express a modified opinion. Our conclusions are based on the audit evidence obtained up to the date of our audit report. However, future events or conditions may cause the Association to cease to be a going concern.

• We evaluate the overall presentation, structure and content of the financial statements, including the disclosed information, and whether the financial statements represent relevant transactions and events in a way that achieves fair presentation.

We communicate to those charged with governance of the Association regarding, among other matters, the scope and timing of the planned audit and significant audit findings, as well as any significant deficiencies in internal control that we identify in the course of the audit.
