At the May meeting of the Trustees the board accepted, with great reluctance, Paul Mellon's decision to retire as chairman and as Trustee, the latter position being one in which he has served for forty-seven years. At the same time, Mr. Mellon was elected Honorary Trustee for life. Shortly after his retirement from the Gallery's board, the United States Senate passed a resolution honoring and thanking Mr. Mellon, on behalf of the American people, for his many years of fruitful service to the National Gallery and this country. The Senate paid tribute to Mr. Mellon as "... a bold and inspired collector, humanist and philanthropist who has made extraordinary and lasting contri- butions to the spirit and well-being of this Nation, thereby enriching the quality of life for his fellow citizens. ." Dr. Franklin D. Murphy, a Trustee of the Gallery since 1964, was elected to succeed Mr. Mellon as chairman. Robert H. Smith, who has most ably led the Trustees' Council as chairman since its incep- tion, succeeds Mr. Mellon as one of the Gallery's five General Trustees. Further changes took place as Alexander M. Laughlin succeeded Mr. Smith as Trustees' Council chairman, and Lois de Menil and John C. Whitehead became council vice chairmen. Now in its third year, the council continues to play a lively and important role in advising the Trustees on a wide range of program and policy issues, and the Gallery benefits greatly from the participation of this interested and informed group. Four new members—Sallie Brophy of Greenwich, Connecticut, Carroll J. Cavanagh of Washington, Robert F. Erburu of Los Angeles, and Lore Heinemann of New York City —have joined the Trustees' Council this year. We learned with profound regret of the death of Trustees' Council member Gabriele Murdock in January. During the course of the year, we accepted the resignations of council members Sid R. Bass, Bruce B. Dayton, and Anne W. Sowell. I am delighted to report that, by the time of Paul Mellon's retirement in May 1985, the Patrons' Permanent Fund exceeded the 6 campaign objective of $50 million. As I have indicated in previous reports, the Gallery's collections are solely the result of private generosity, with no government funds ever being used for acquisi- tions. Accordingly, the private sector must continue to be the source through which the Gallery gains its ability to ensure its continued excellence, and the Patrons1 Permanent Fund will play a key role in providing such capability. A list of donors to the fund up to the end of last fiscal year appears immediately following this preface. We are very grateful indeed for the exceptional generosity of all of those who have made our first-ever campaign such a success. I also wish to take this occasion to express the Gallery's appreciation to our hardworking campaign committee of J. Carter Brown, Katharine Graham, Louis J. Hector, Carlisle H. Humelsine, R. L. Ireland III, Ruth Carter Stevenson, Paul Mellon, Franklin D. Murphy, Robert H. Smith, and John C. Whitehead. These innovations made it possible to mould and cast increasingly complex models in sand moulds with undercut parts, thus paving the way for the founding of intricately shaped sculpture in metal.

Picasso in Istanbul has been selected by the artist‟s grandson Bernard Ruiz-Picasso and Marta-Volga Guezala. Picasso expert Marilyn McCully and author Michael Raeburn are joint curators of the exhibition and the catalogue, working together with Nazan Olçer, Director of the Sakip Sabanci Museum, and Selmin Kangal, the museum‟s Exhibitions Manager. The exhibition will include 135 works spanning the whole of the artist‟s career, including paintings, sculptures, ceramics, textiles and photographs. The works have been loaned from private collections and major museums, including the Picasso museums in Barcelona and Paris. The exhibition also includes significant loans from the Fundaciñn Almine y Bernard Ruiz-Picasso para el Arte. A number of rarely seen works from private collections will be a special highlight of the exhibition, including tapestries of “Les Demoiselles d‟Avignon” and “Les femmes à leur toilette” and the unique bronze cast, “Head of a Warrior, 1933”.

A civic leader and philanthropist, Marian championed outdoor community spaces across AMERICAN New York and led a nonprofit organization responsible for restoring the 42nd Street theatres. She was instrumental in the 1972 campaign PAINTINGS, SCULPTURE & PRINTS to create the Gateway National Recreation Area, a 26,000-acre park with scattered beaches and wildlife refuges around the entrance to the New York-New Jersey harbor. For 34 years, she worked as a Director of The New York Times, where her grandfather, father, husband, brother, nephew and grand-nephew served as successive publishers. Her work at the newspaper focused on educational projects. In 1965, Marian married Andrew Heiskell, the Chairman of Time Inc., whose philanthropies included the New York Public Library.     Gender and Computer Games/ Video Games Girls’ Perspective Orientation Authors: Yan Jingjing Subject: Master Thesis in Business Administration 15 ECTS Program: Master of International Management Gotland University Spring semester 2010 Supervisor: Bo Lennstrand Abstract The topic of this thesis is “Gender Differences in Computer games/ Video games Industry”. Due to rapid development in technology and popularization of computers all around the world, computer games have already become a kind of common entertainment. Because computer games were designed especially for boys at the very beginning, there are still some remaining barriers when training female game designers and expanding game markets among female players. This thesis is mainly based on two studies which have enormous contributions to gender issue in computer games area. A simple model is established by summarizing factors mentioned and discussed in those two books. The main purpose consists of two comparisons under Gender Differences: one comparison is between the current data with the previous one, in order to check whether there are any changes during the past 10 years. The other one compares the young people in two regions, Sweden and China, in computer games perspective. Model designing, test, questionnaire and interview methods are used in this paper aiming to collect and categorize the data, which facilitates to analyze the results of the comparisons. The results reflect that although computer becomes a familiar “friend” in modern daily life, there are not obvious changes of girls‟ perspectives in computer game industry. Certainly, there are some differences between the young people coming from two regions which will be expounded in the thesis.

Konstnären Anna Palm Anna Sofia Palm föddes i Stockholm den 25 december 1859 och växte upp i ett konst- närshem på Barnhusträdgårdsgatan 19, se- dermera Tunnelgatan och numera Olof Palmes gata.
