• The Triathlete Hour Ep. 48
The Triathlete Hour Ep. 48. - Kathryn Bertine_mixdown Kelly: Welcome to the Triathlete Hour. And this week we have a fun episode with Kathryn Bertine. Now, if you're like me, you've heard of Kathryn because she spearheaded the successful campaign to get a women's Tour de France race-- Now a one-day event called La Course-- which she also raced in. And she produced the documentary Half the Road. She's been an editor for ESPN writing their popular column on trying to make the Olympics in any sport, any country, just go out and make it happen. Something she actually lived through too. And she also wrote a book about it. Another book about her years as a professional figure skater... And now she's here with her latest book Stand, about how to be an activist and the behind the scenes story of the toll it took on her personal life as she fought for equality in women's cycling. But what you might not know about Kathryn is she started out as a pro triathlete before switching to cycling and she tells us what it is she still loves about triathlon, some of the details of how she worked to make change. And after all that upheaval, what it was like having a massive crash mid race that left her nearly dead in Mexico. And coming back from that. It's an interesting conversation because Kathryn is always an interesting person. And before we get to that Laura Sidall joins us for Sid Talks to talk about some of the big news coming out of triathlete magazine this week also, who gets to race during COVID.

Race Report #19 Pre Worlds Racing in Belgium for Steven Cozza 4th Place in the G.P of Nations iTT Steve Cozza September 13, 2003 On a warm September night, the canal runs quiet with only a train nearby breaking the silence in the little town known as Izegem. Breathing the Belgium air again to me is a feeling of freedom. I will live here and I will suffer greatly here but this is where some of my dreams will come true. I have learned the past year that life can be very difficult at times but if you continue to dream and continue to follow your dreams your future will fall into place on its own. Everything in life takes time and everything in life takes working for. You can't just be a European pro over night, but with a lot of work and a little luck things will go your way and that is the same with most things in life, especially with relationships. This past weekend I had my first races back in Europe this year. Since the US National team only sent me and another junior, Keith Norris, over they are having us combine to race on a Belgium team called Think Media Cycling. It was sweet because they gave me so much riding clothes and casual wear clothes. On Saturday the 13th I raced in a 120k road race with some 1k climbs in it. Since these races are for us to get ready for the Worlds in October I raced really hard and aggressive.

Questions about a Champion "If a misdeed arises in the search for truth, it is better to exhume it rather than conceal the truth." Saint Jerome. "When I wake up in the morning, I can look in the mirror and say: yes, I'm clean. It's up to you to prove that I am guilty." Lance Armstrong, Liberation, July 24,2001. "To deal with it, the teams must be clear on ethics. Someone crosses the line? He doesn't have the right to a second chance!" Lance Armstrong, L'Equipe, April 28, 2004. Between the World Road Champion encountered in a Norwegian night club, who sipped a beer, talked candidly, laughed easily and never let the conversation falter, and the cyclist with a stem, closed face, who fended off the July crowd, protected by a bodyguard or behind the smoked glass of the team bus, ten years had passed. July 1993. In the garden of an old-fashioned hotel near Grenoble, I interviewed Armstrong for three hours. It was the first professional season for this easygoing, slightly cowboyish, and very ambitious Texan. I left with a twenty-five-page interview, the chapter of a future book11 was writing about the Tour de France. I also took with me a real admiration for this young man, whom I thought had a promising future in cycling. Eight years later, in the spring of 2001, another interview. But the Tour of 1998 had changed things. Scandals and revelations were running rampant in cycling. Would my admiration stand the test? In August 1993, it was a happy, carefree, eloquent Armstrong, whom Pierre Ballester, met the evening after he won the World Championship in Oslo.

3 women, 2 Olympic spots, 1 bike race to go By JOHN MILLER,Associated Press BOISE, Idaho (AP) — Three women are vying for two slots on the U.S. time trial team in the London Olympics. Making the cut might come down to a five-day stage race that starts Thursday in Boise. Kristin Armstrong Savola, the 2008 Olympic time trial gold medalist, former world champion Amber Neben, and Evelyn Stevens, a Wall Street associate-turned-professional cyclist, will race head-to-head for the first time this season at the Exergy Tour in southwestern Idaho, which offers a $100,000 prize list. Armstrong, Neben and Stevens — and dozens of women from around the world, from 16 professional teams — will have one of their final chances to win points for their own Olympic teams. USA Cycling, the sport's U.S. governing body, will announce its London-bound squad June 15. Though Armstrong, Neben and Stevens each have a good chance to become a member of the U.S. road racing team, the selection committee's assessment of which two have the best shot for the Olympic podium will govern who rides the Aug. 1 time trial. "It's been a big goal of mine," the 37-year-old Neben said from her home in Lake Forest, Calif., last week. "We have a lot of strong time trialists in the country, it's not something I assume is going to happen, but I'm working very hard to achieve it." Just a day before the race, one squad, California-based Team TIBCO, had its plans complicated by the theft of $120,000 in bikes and equipment from a trailer parked outside its Boise hotel.
