(Shimizu,!2004),!Dark/Water!(Nakata,!2002),!Battle/Royale!(Fukusaku,!2000)!and! Ichi/the/Killer!(Miike,!2001).! !     Belphégor Norbert Spehner L'Horreur dans la Bibliothèque! Bibliographie internationale sélective des études sur l'horreur dans la littérature, la bande dessinée, et le cinéma. Avertissement: traditionnellement, le concept d'horreur est relié à la littérature fantastique et au gothique, au gore, et au cinéma dit d'épouvante, fantastique ou non (ex. le slasher film avec ses psychopathes terrifiants ou pire, le splatterfilm du cinéma gore). Les études sélectionnées ici mettent l'accent sur ce concept d'horreur. Il n'est donc pas question de mentionner ici toutes les études sur le fantastique, par exemple. La compilation bibliographique permet quelques remarques immédiates: le terme "horror" est très prisé par les Anglo-Saxons et les Italiens, alors que les Français lui préfèrent "fantastique" ou "terreur" sauf quand il s'agit d'explorer les sous-cultures du genre fantastique comme le gore, par exemple. Les théoriciens français de la littérature fantastique, comme Roger Bozzetto ou Denis Mellier (parmi d'autres) n'emploient que très rarement le mot horreur, concept auquel ils ne consacrent que quelques rares pages. Les ouvrages sur le cinéma prédominent, peut-être parce que l'horreur, c'est spectaculaire, c'est quelque chose qui se mon(s)tre facilement . La grande majorité des références est donc d'origine anglo-saxonne, en partie à cause de leur usage très général du mot "horror". Pour des raisons pratiques, nous n'avons pas retenu les innombrables monographies sur les auteurs et les cinéastes individuels. This study explores the rise of contemporary Australian horror production: emerging production and distribution models; the films produced; and the industrial, market and technological forces driving production. Australian horror production is a vibrant production sector comprising mainstream and underground spheres of production. Mainstream horror production is an independent, internationally oriented production sector on the margins of the Australian film industry producing titles such as Wolf Creek (2005) and Rogue (2007), while underground production is a fan-based, indie filmmaking subculture, producing credit-card films such as I know How Many Runs You Scored Last Summer (2006) and The Killbillies (2002). Overlap between these spheres of production, results in ‘high-end indie’ films such as Undead (2003) and Gabriel (2007) emerging from the underground but crossing over into the mainstream.

They made it clear that they possessed certain magical secrets of their profession, but they mentioned them evasively. Now and then they made lofty artistic pronouncements, but they showed a more sincere interest in anecdotes about scenarios that were written on a cuff during a gay supper.... This might well be a description of Hollywood during any period of its cultivated silence on the matter of film-making. Actually, it is Leningrad in 1924, described by Grigori Kozintsev in his memoirs.1 It is so seldom that we are allowed to study the disclosures of a Hollywood film-maker about his medium that I cannot recall the last instance that preceded John Howard Lawson's book. There is no dearth of books about Hollywood, but when did any other book come from there that takes such articulate pride in the art that is-or was-made there? I have never understood exactly why the makers of American films felt it necessary to hide their methods and aims under blankets of coyness and anecdotes, the one as impenetrable as the other.

The Sanctification of ear:F Images of the Religious in Horror Films Abstract Horror film functions both as a threat and a catharsis by confronting us with our fear of death, the supernatural, the unknown and irrational, ''the other" in general, a loss of identity, and forces beyond our control. Over the last century, religious symbols and themes have played a prominent and persistent role in the on-screen construction of this confrontation. That role is, at the same time, ambiguous insofar as religious iconography has become unhinged from a compelling moral vision and reduced to mere conventions that produce a quasi-religious quality to horror that lacks the symbolic power required to engage us at the deepest level of our being. Although religious symbols in horror films are conventional in their frequent use, they may have lost all connection to deeper human questions.

(Kojima Productions, 2014), a playable teaser made to demo a planned instalment within the Silent Hill franchise. While the game is now indefinitely cancelled, P.T. has cemented itself not only as a full gaming experience, but also as a juggernaut in the genre of psychological horror. Drawing from Sigmund Freud’s concept of the uncanny, the aim of the paper is to address how these psychological concepts surface within the now infamous never-ending hallway of P.T. and create a deeply psychologically horrifying experience.     Chapter Six: New Terrors, Emerging Trends and the Future of Japanese Horror Repetition, Innovation, and ‘J-Horror’ Anthologies The following pages constitute not only this book’s final chapter, but its conclusion as well. I adopt this structural and rhetorical manoeuvre for two reasons. Firstly, the arguments advanced in this chapter provide a critical assessment of the state of the horror genre in Japanese cinema at the time of this writing. As a result, this chapter examines not only the rise of a self-reflexive tendency within recent works of Japanese horror film, but also explores how visual and narratological redundancy may compromise the effectiveness of future creations, transforming motifs into clichés and, quite possibly, reducing the tradition’s potential as an avenue for cultural critique and aesthetic intervention. As one might suspect, the promise of quick economic gain – motivated both by the genre’s popularity in Western markets, as well as by the cinematic tradition’s contribution to what James Udden calls a ‘pan-[east-]Asian’ film style (2005: para 5) – inform the fevered perpetuation of predictable shinrei mono eiga (‘ghost films’). Secondly, by examining the emergence of several visually inventive and intellectually sophisticated films by some of Japanese horror cinema’s most accomplished practitioners, this chapter proposes that the creative fires spawned by the explosion of Japanese horror in the 1990s are far from extinguished. As close readings 172 Nightmare Japan of works like Ochiai Masayuki’s Infection (Kansen, 2004), Tsuruta Norio’s Premonition (Yogen, 2004), Shimizu Takashi’s Marebito (2004), and Tsukamoto Shinya’s Vital (2004) variably reveal, the future of Japanese horror cinema may be very bright indeed.
