'Itwas compiled for the express purpose L.J of providing bilingual education,multiethnic education, and women's studies programs witha guide to the literature onwomen within their culturalcontext. Over two thousand entries in this Sourcebook belie statements thatmaterials on ethnic womenare not available in the UnitedStates. However, the slim resources found forsome ethnic and racial groups in the K-12 categoryare eloquent proof that much research and development is still to be donein the area of women's multi- ethnic studies. Tbe discovery process began tfr, with the standard computer .searches in th@ ERIC, PsychologlEalAbstracts, Sociological Abstracts, and Disse ation Abstracts data bases.Manual searches followed, with reviews f the reference materials listed inthe Sources section of this urcebook. The second phase of the discovery process involvedmail-outs to hundreds of community and Nsi rofessional org nizations identifiedin commercfally available wome and minorities directories andmailing lists provided by the U. Commission on Civil Rights.Through these mail-outs the project hoped to identifysome of the more visible multicultural materials. In order to break the searchprocess down to more specific ethnic women' groups aad to materials useful to educ tional programs, a third process was instituted fora mail surv- of iii 4 institutions and programs in the following networks: Ethnic historical associations and archival depositories Chicano Research Network in Higher Education Sex Desegregation Assistance Centers and State Training Institutes for Sex Discrimination Race Desegregation Assistance Centers b National Origin Desegregation Assistance Centers Bilingual Education NetWork (for projects emphasizing ethnic studies) 4441. H.E.W. Women's Educational Equity Network H.E.W. Ethnic Heritage Programs Ethnic women's organizations from the data filesat Information Systems Development. Of all networks, the ones which provided the most material were the ethnic historical associations and the Sex Desegregation Assistance Centers. As a final strategy, the project reviewed the reference work Who's Who and Where in Women's Studies, publishedby The Feminist Press, to sele.ct ethnic courses and instructors. These instruc- tors were then surveyed and requested to supply syllabiand reading lists. Many fine entries were added this way. Organization The project sought to organize the materialsas much as possible by specific racial or ethnicgroups. However, since many publications present information on more than one population group, it became necessary to include, as a first major entry, the section on Multicultural/Multiethnic Materials. Therein are included important entries covering a variety of racial and 5 iv ethnic groups whichwere much too varied to be incorporated even in the more generalized sections, suchas "Hispanic Women" or "Asian-American Women." ,When the more specific categorieswere organized, again there were entries covering majorpopulation groups like the Hispanic population with materialswhich include more than one Hispanic group. In this case, a general category,"Hispanic Women," was created, followed bysubcategories of very specific ethnic groups. This process was followedas an organizational strategy to allow for both types of entries, thecomposite and the specif- ic, where there' were enoughpublications in the data base to justify the specific breakdowns. Users will, of course, note that some,categorieshave only general entries and littleor no classroom materials. These are categories where the project listed all thatwas discovered for the specific ethnic group but wherefew classroom materials were found. Readers will also note the absence of thepathological and fertility studies which abound in ethnicliteratuI e, especially that. pertaining to women. Although these materialsare existent in the card data base whichwas prepared by the project, they were not included in the Sourcebook, except where such studies have strong educational implications, This omission is purpose- ful in that the Sourcebook is intended foruse by the educational community for the planning and implementation ofeducational pro- grams. In this case, specific studies on alcoholism,delinquency, and fertility rates were found to betoo far removed from the specific needs of the classroom. 1.7 While this Sourcebook is a selected listing of the available literature, it is not necessarily a critical review of the lit- erature. Wherever possible, contents descriptions are given, as are grade levels. Other information in the entries and in the descriptions, such as titles, editions, prices, and biographicalcomments, are based on the latest information available to the developers of this Sourcebook.
