Foreword Art and design education are part of a comprehensive Pre-K-12 education for all students. The Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction continues its efforts to support the skill and knowledge development for our students across the state in all content areas. This guide is meant to support this work as well as foster additional reflection on the instructional framework that will most effectively support students’ learning in art and design through creative practices. This document represents a new direction for art education, identifying a more in-depth review of art and design education. The most substantial change involves the definition of art and design education as the study of visual thinking – including design, visual communications, visual culture, and fine/studio art. The guide provides local, statewide, and national examples in each of these areas to the reader. The overall framework offered suggests practice beyond traditional modes and instead promotes a more constructivist approach to learning. -

Boren announced Thursday that the university has received one of the most important private collections of Native American art in the country. The gift comes to OU from the private collection of James T. Bialac of Arizona. The multimillion-dollar collection of more than 3,500 works represents indigenous cultures across North America, especially the Pueblos of the Southwest, the Navajo, the Hopi, many of the tribes of the Northern and Southern Plains and the Southeastern tribes. Included in the James T. Bialac Native American Art Collection are approximately 2,600 paintings and works on paper, 1,000 kachinas and 100 pieces of jewelry representing major Native artists such as Fred Kabotie, Awa Tsireh, Fritz Scholder, Joe Herrera, Allan Houser, Jerome Tiger, Tonita Pena, Helen Hardin, Pablita Velarde, George Morrison, Richard “Dick” West, Patrick DesJarlait and Pop Chalee. “The university community is deeply grateful to Jim Bialac for this important and generous gift,” said OU President David L. Boren. “This collection will expose our students and people all across the country to some of the most important works of Native American art ever created. It will provide new insight into Native American culture. In addition, the collection will be an important source for art history students, including graduate students in OU’s Ph.D. -

This was the most elegant and meticulous publication on American Indian art ever offered for sale. Its publication came at a time when American Indian art of the West and Southwest was prominent in the public imagination. Of particular interest to the art world in that decade were the new watercolors being made by Kiowa and Pueblo artists; a place was being made for their display within the realm of the American “fine arts” traditions in museums and art galleries all over the country. Indexing is similar to that found in READERS' GurnE TO PERIODICAL LITERATURE; each article is listed under the heading or headings most closely indicating the general subject matter. This is not a detailed analytical index to contents of articles. The user will find, for instance, those articles which deal with Katchinas, but not the names of various Katchinas discussed in the articles. Very general headings such as DESCRIPTION have been used only where more specific headings were not possible. A series of tall tales which appeared during early years of the magazine have been listed under that heading. Portraits have been indexed wherever there was a clear likeness. Group por traits have been incJuded when likenesses were clear and recognizable. There is a special index to color illustrations which have been an outstanding feature of ARIZONA HrGHWAYS for the past 10 years. Generally each picture has been listed under a single subject, the one which in the fallible judgment of the compiler, seemed most appropriate. 1 KIVA INDEX: Volumes 1 through 83 This index combines five previously published Kiva indexes and adds index entries for the most recent completed volumes of Kiva. Nancy Bannister scanned the indexes for volumes 1 through 60 into computer files that were manipulated for this combined index. The first published Kiva index was prepared in 1966 by Elizabeth A.M. Gell and William J. Robinson. It included volumes 1 through 30. The second index includes volumes 31 through 40; it was prepared in 1975 by Wilma Kaemlein and Joyce Reinhart. The third, which covers volumes 41 through 50, was prepared in 1988 by Mike Jacobs and Rosemary Maddock. The fourth index, compiled by Patrick D. Lyons, Linda M. Gregonis, and Helen C. Hayes, was prepared in 1998 and covers volumes 51 through 60. I prepared the index that covers volumes 61 through 70. It was published in 2006 as part of Kiva volume 71, number 4. Brid Williams helped proofread the index for volumes 61 through 70. To keep current with our volume publication and the needs of researchers for on-line information, the Arizona Archaeological and Historical Society board decided that it would be desirable to add entries for each new volume as they were finished. I have added entries for volumes 71 through 83 to the combined index. It is the Society's goal to continue to revise this index on a yearly basis. As might be expected, the styles of the previously published indexes varied, as did the types of entries found. I changed some entries to reflect current terminology. -

Language of Material: English . Biographical note Harold L. Doolittle (1883-1974) was born in Pasadena, California. He was an etcher and civil engineer who studied at Cornell University (1903-1906) and Throop Polytechnic Institute (later California Institute of Technology). He served as President of the Pasadena Society of Artists in 1943, and Vice President of the Los Angeles Section of the American Society of Civil Engineers in 1934. He worked for many years as chief design engineer for the Southern California Edison Company. Doolittle worked in all the graphic processes including photography and collotype, but he is most noted for his aquatints. -
