Proceedings of the British Academy, 81, 37-66 The Cultural Mosaic of the Indigenous Caribbean SAMUEL M. WILSON Department of Anthropology, University of Texas at Austin, Austin, TX 78712 Summary. On Columbus’s first voyage he developed an interpreta- tion of the political geography of the Caribbean that included two major indigenous groups-Tainos (or Arawaks) of the Greater Antilles and the Caribs of the Lesser Antilles. Subsequent Spanish encounters with indigenous peoples in the region did not challenge this interpretation directly, and Crown policy allowing the capture of indigenous slaves from Caribbean islands supposed to have been “Carib” tended to reinforce Columbus’s vision of an archipelago divided between only two groups. Recent ethnohistorical and archaeological research has provided evidence that challenges this interpretation. In the reinterpretation presented here, it is argued that before European contact, as has been the case since European conquest, the Caribbean archipelago was probably more ethnically and linguistically diverse than is usually assumed. FIVEHUNDRED YEARS after Columbus landed in the New World, the nature and diversity of the indigenous peoples of the Americas are still not completely understood. Those five hundred years have been marked by continual reappraisals of the variability and complexity of indigenous American societies, with each generation discovering that earlier European and Euroamerican views were too poorly informed or limited to make sense of the expanding body of information relating to New World people. Fifteenth century explorers’ expectations of the people of the Caribbean were drawn from sketchy accounts of Asia and Africa. Sixteenth century conquistadors approached the American mainlands with expectations that Read at the Academy 4 December 1992. -

Foster California State Parks PO Box 942896 Sacramento, CA 94296-0001 [email protected] The southeastern region of the Dominican Republic is characterized by karst topography with numerous caves and sinkholes. In 1492 this sector of the island of Hispaniola was occupied by the Taíno chiefdom of Higüey. The local Taíno population used subterranean chambers for a variety of purposes. Two such sites, the Padre Nuestro complex and the Manantial de la Aleta, provide insights into Taíno use of water-filled caverns. The Cueva de Chicho and other caves in the Padre Nuestro complex served as sources of water. By Razi Abdur-Rahman This thesis presents a study of taíno history and society in the Caribbean for upper elementary grade levels. The taíno people, apart from the Inuit of the Arctic regions of North America, were some of most accomplished maritime explorers during the pre-Columbian era. This thesis gives the reader an in-depth knowledge of the migrations of native peoples into the Caribbean basin, as well as an original narrative of how taíno people left the South American mainland in hopes of exploring and resettling the Caribbean basin. The work and historical research included is meant to be a resource for elementary and middle school teachers looking to enrich or provide context for units on exploration of the Americas through a multicultural curricular framework. Research Problem My thesis will demonstrate a broad impact of Taino language and culture on the languages of the Americas following the European invasion based on linguistic evidence from first-hand accounts of explorers, invaders, priests and indigenous scribes in the first fifty years after European contact. The extent of the contribution of the Taino to the general culture of the Americas will also be shown to extend from early in the subjugation of the Aztec empire in 1521 all the way to the present. -

Rebellion and Anti-colonial Struggle in Hispaniola: From Indigenous Agitators to African Rebels by Ana Ozuna, Ph.D. [email protected] Eugenio María de Hostos Community College The City University of New York Abstract From the inception of the colonial enterprise on Hispaniola, Tainos and Africans challenged the body politic of coloniality by implementing resistance tactics to contest enslavement and assert their autonomy. My research uses a range of archival evidence and works of revisionist historians to examine the sustained rebellious activity by indigenous and Black rebels up to the end of the eighteenth century. Enslaved Tainos, ladinos, and bozales engaged in guerrilla warfare, plundered Spanish strongholds, established maroon enclaves, and constituted alternative identities and socio-political realities to assert their freedom. Hence, this essay demonstrates how these resistance tactics debilitated plantation slavery and consequently tempered the violent apparatus of control established by the Spanish colonial regime. Thus, this exercise intends to fill the gap in the understanding of a three century long generational saga of anti-colonial struggle that adeptly disrupted the matrix of colonial power. D. from University at Buffalo in Spanish Literature and currently serves as Assistant Professor at Hostos Community College, and teaches Black and Caribbean Studies courses.
