Aurelio Settimo Aurelio Settimo’s parents settled their land in the tiny hamlet of Annunziata in the heart of Barolo in 1943. Here they practiced mixed farming: tending and fruit and hazelnut trees, as well as breeding hens, rabbits and cows. The grapes were sold to big local and the family only kept enough to make a small amount of wine for themselves, until the late 1950s when Aurelio’s father began bottling some under the name Settimo Domenico.

When Domenico passed away in 1962, Aurelio abandoned mixed farming and animal breeding to follow his heart, creating the Aurelio Settimo label. Aurelio died in 2007 and his daughter Tiziana took the reins but has kept his philosophy alive: to focus on quality in keeping with tradition. The estate has shown consistent growth in terms of quality while maintaining absolute respect for the noble local tradition and the land, and has banned the use of chemicals in the

From their various styles of Gutturnio (a Barbera, Bonarda blend), to their (a variety native to the region), and their Trebbianino Val Trebbia, which was created by Anacleto Bonelli in the 1950s and which has become a benchmark wine of the region, Bonelli wines define the Colli Piacentini.

Depending on the wine, production varies from around 1,000 cases to as little as 200 cases per wine. Artisanal indeed.

Tenuta Fernanda Cappello Fernanda Cappello, an architect, who was fascinated and charmed by a land that was so individual and tough, spends all her time producing wine. Her passion, competence and professionalism is constantly growing, and these - together with the crucial contribution of highly-motivated experts and colleagues who are proud of their work - are the lifeblood of her energetic management of the estate.

The Fernanda Cappello estate is to the north of the D.O.C. Grave area: where the flood plains and the moraine hills (between Lestans and Sequals) can be compared to the "" of Bordeaux. The grapes are harvested mechanically in the early morning. They are then quickly cooled to a low temperature and allowed to macerate at a controlled temperature to capture the aromatic components of the skins. A light follows and the must obtained is cleared by static decantation. Fermentation is temperature controlled in stainless steel. At the end of the fermentation the wine is allowed to rest on the lees for at least six months.

The state-of-the-art winery which was built in 1997 is named after a 19th century historic windmill located on the property across from the cantina. However, the viticultural history of the property is much older: the vineyards at Il Molino di Grace have been fruitful for over 350 years. Azienda Agricola Basile Giovan Battista Basile purchased his land in 1999. Giovan has always attended to all of the agricultural and oenological activities with the help of Maurizio Saettini, a young and active winemaker. The lands extend for approximately 34 hectares and are mostly exposed towards the South-West. The altitude varies in height between 380 and 330 meters. The soil has a prevalently calcareous composition typical to this territory that is known as galestro; a rock that crumbles in time because of bad weather.

Since the beginning Giovan has chosen to cultivate the land in accordance with biological agriculture. The vineyards are surrounded by woods that create a great natural protective barrier. Manure and other organic materials of biological origin are used as fertilizers. To help fight diseases that might affect the vines traditional products such as sulphur and in rigorously controlled quantities, copper, are used. Many operations including the are carried out manually to permit the best quality of the grapes. Weed killers are never used.

Fattoria Forano * Villa Forano It’s not always easy to build on the success of our parents, but the Lucangeli children are doing just that. Fattoria Forano’s wines, offered under the name “Villa Forano,” have long been terrific. Tasting the latest shows that sisters Chiara and Benedetta and brother Francesco are taking this venerable estate to the next level. Fattoria Forano enjoys a unique microclimate with vineyards high in the hills but only 15 miles from the Adriatic Sea. The vines benefit from the region's diurnal temperature changes and drying maritime winds that ventilate and cool the vineyards.

On a recent visit with Fattoria Forano, it was endearing to see the locals stopping by the winery to fill their containers with wine for their families. Such tradition is as much a part of the Marche as the best bottles of wine. While wine making in the Marche has never been better, culturally, the Marche reminds us of Italy’s romantic past. It’s increasingly rare to find this wonderful dichotomy and it’s what makes the Marche so special

Tenuta dell'Ugolino To understand Tenuta dell'Ugolino is to understand Andrea Petrini's connection to the land and his family. His grandfather Ugolino worked the land of wealthy landowners, and it was this experience that inspired Andrea to create his own wine on his own estate. You can taste the pride of ownership and the devotion to tradition in Andrea's wines. These are some of the most focused and pure expressions of Verdicchio being made in the Marche today.

Andrea makes 4 wines on his 14 hectare estate. His Verdicchio dei Castelli di Jesi Classico "Le Piaole" and "Cru" Verdicchio dei Castelli di Jesi Classico Superiore "Vigneto del Balluccio" come from single vineyards noted for their pebbly, fossil-rich soil and maritime climate which give the wines abundant minerality to complement the rich fruit. Andrea's , a tiny-production Rosso Piceno "Castel del Piano" is focused and pure with great balance between its red and blue fruits and juicy acidity. Finally, Andrea makes an even smaller production Passito from Verdicchio grapes. Luigi Fusco heads this boutique estate and any discussion with him about his wines likely will begin with a “show and tell” discussion about his volcanic soils and how they shape and influence his wines. Luigi is a man who understands his land and wants to showcase his terroir through his wines. His organic line of wines is the “next level up” in Lazio wines.

8 Torre Zambra Torre Zambra is one of the historic estates in Abruzzo. In this region more known for quantity than quality, the De Cerchio family is one of the benchmark estates dedicated to quality winemaking. They’ve long understood that the subregion Villamagna, 10 kilometers to the Adriatic and 20 kilometers from the mountains is perhaps the preeminent grape growing region in Abruzzo.

The De Cerchio family grows Montepulciano, Pecorino, Passerina and Trebbiano on its limestone and clay soils. It’s southeast facing vineyards benefit from Villamagna’s hot days and cold nights giving the wines fragrance and color while retaining their firm, acidic backbone.

Torre Zambra endorses the philosophy of utilizing spontaneous fermentations to produce wines as transparent and natural as possible. Consistent with this minimal-intervention approach, they do not use barrique in the aging of their wines. Instead, they use a combination of cement and Tonneau which they believe expresses the unique terroir of Villamagna. As the family notes, “The wines are complex and thrilling, the the purest expressions of their place of origin.” PLCB Madia Abruzzi 2016 12 750 13.49 Grapes: Montepulciano Appellation: Montepulciano d’Abruzzo DOC Vinification & Ageing: Stainless Steel for 1 year followed by 4 months in bottle.

Colli di Castelfranci One of the most exciting developments in in the last decade certainly has to be southern Italy’s transformation from work-a-day wines to fine wines. It’s producers like Cantina Colli di Castelfranci that are leading this transformation. The name of the winery pays homage to the small village in which it’s located, Castelfranci, in the Avellino province of Campania. It’s here that long-time growers, the Gregorio and Colucci families joined in 2002 to start producing premium wines in this very special terroir.

Campania is home to some of southern Italy’s greatest white and red wine DOCs/DOCGs, and Colli di Castelfranci shows off an impressive diversity of wines, from Fiano di Avellino DOCG to Greco di Tufo DOCG to Falanghina DOC. With regard to red wines, Aglianico struts its stuff with the famous wines of Taurasi taking center stage.
