Here they practiced mixed farming: tending vineyards and fruit and hazelnut trees, as well as breeding hens, rabbits and cows. The grapes were sold to big local wineries and the family only kept enough to make a small amount of wine for themselves, until the late 1950s when Aurelio’s father began bottling some under the name Settimo Domenico. When Domenico passed away in 1962, Aurelio abandoned mixed farming and animal breeding to follow his heart, creating the Aurelio Settimo label. Aurelio died in 2007 and his daughter Tiziana took the reins but has kept his philosophy alive: to focus on quality in keeping with tradition. The estate has shown consistent growth in terms of quality while maintaining absolute respect for the noble local winemaking tradition and the land, and has banned the use of chemicals in the vineyard PLCB Dolcetto Piedmont 2016 12 750 13.99 Grape: Dolcetto Appellation: Dolcetto d’Alba DOC Vinification & Ageing: short fermentation on the skins (submerged cap for 7 days), with frequent breaking up of the cap and pumping over of the must. Malolactic takes place in concrete while aging for 6 months with an addition 3 months aging in the bottle. PLCB Barolo Piedmont 2010 12 750 46.59 Grape: Nebbiolo Appellation: Barolo DOCG Rocche dell’ Annunziata Vinification & Ageing: Fairly lengthy fermentation on the skins (submerged cap for 15-20 days), with frequent breaking up of the cap and pumping over of the must, followed by maturing in oak casks holding between 2,500 and 3,500 liters. Malolactic happens in concrete. The wine is then aged 24 months in big oak casks ranging in age between 10-15 years. All wood is French with no toast. The wine is then aged 24 months with 6 months in the bottle. Azienda Agricola Rigo Vini As Silvano Rigo explains, passion and experience provide the groundwork for his wines. Silvano's vineyards are in Diano d'Alba in the Langhe hills where Dolcetto finds some of its best expression. Silvano's 10 hectare estate is located mostly in the esteemed Sori Piadvenza 400 meters above sea level. Here the limestone soil and southern exposure produce grapes of the highest quality. When visiting Silvano, you're most likely to find him with his father, Secondo. Father and son work together producing Piedmont's "other" wines of distinction -- Dolcetto, Barbera, Nebbiolo d'Alba, Arneis and Chardonnay. They combine the best of traditional techniques with modern know how, using a combination of stainless steel and oak barrels to make wines that are complex, delicious and easy to drink. PLCB Arneis Piedmont 2016 12 750 12.89 Chardonnay Piedmont 2016 12 750 12.79 Barbera d’Alba Piedmont 2016 12 750 13.89 Barbera Superiore Piedmont 2014 12 750 16.89 1 Cantine Fratelli Bonelli The wines of Cantine Fratelli Bonelli are absolutely delightful and an enchanting departure from the ordinary. They proudly hail from the little-known DOC of Colli Piacentini nestled between the Piedmont and Lombardy in the lovely Emilia region of Italy. The Bonelli family has been making wines since the 1940s, and today is one of the region's most famous producers. The variety of wines and variety of styles is amazing; with reds and whites made frizzante and still, dry and off-dry, in the regional tradition. From their various styles of Gutturnio (a Barbera, Bonarda blend), to their Ortrugo (a variety native to the region), and their Trebbianino Val Trebbia, which was created by Anacleto Bonelli in the 1950s and which has become a benchmark wine of the region, Bonelli wines define the Colli Piacentini. PLCB Trebbianino Val Trebbia Emilia Romagna 2016 12 750 11.89 Grapes: Ortugo 60%, Malvasia di Candia Aromatica 30%, 10% Varietal Blend Style: Frizzante Appellation: Colli Piacentini DOC Method: Charmat; 3 months Vinification & Ageing: vinified with immediate skin removal and temperature controlled fermentation. PLCB Malvasia Emilia Romagna 2015 6 750 11.89 Grape: Malvasia di Candia Aromatica Style: Sweet Frizzante Appellation: Colli Piacentini DOC Method: Charmat; 3 months Vinification & Ageing: white vinification with immediate skin removal and temperature controlled fermentation. PLCB Bonarda Emilia Romagna 2016 12 750 10.89 Grape: Bonarda Appellation: Colli Piacentini DOC Style: Semi Sweet Frizzante Method: Charmat; 2-4 months Vinification & Ageing: red vinification of 5-7days depending on the vintage Ca' Pigneto Ca’Pigneto is located in the heart of the Valpolicella region and steeped in history. Originally the site of a convent it was purchased by the Bompiani family who converted the site into a summer villa and retreat for Verona’s noble families. The villa dates back to the 17 century and is now owned by the Serenelli family. In its third generation it is run by the Countess Paola Adami Serenelli along with her husband and sons. PLCB Recioto Veneto 2013 6 500 49.99 Grapes: Corvina, Rodinella, Molinara Appelation: Recioto Della Valpolicella DOCG Vinification & Ageing: Grapes are hand harvested and then let to dry for 4 months; concentrating the sugars and flavors. Fermentation is done slowly and stopped at 13.5%. Aged 8 months in small Slavonian oak barrels fallowed by 3 months in the bottle. PLCB Ripasso Veneto 2015 6 750 29.99 2010 1 1.5L 159.99 Grapes: Corvina, Rondinella Appellation: Valpolicella Ripasso DOC Vinification & Ageing: The Valpolicella Superiore is put to ferment a second time on the skins of the dried grapes used for the production of Amarone, to obtain more concentration of body, color, aroma, and sugars. PLCB Amarone Veneto 2008 6 750 69.99 2009 6 750 74.89 2008 1 1.5L 224.99 Grapes: Corvina, Rondinella Appellation: Amarone Della Valpolicella DOCG Vinification & Ageing: Grapes are hand harvested and let to dry for 3 months; concentrating the sugars and flavors. The grapes are then pressed and let to ferment naturally for 30 days. Aged 30 months in small Slavonian oak barrel followed by 6 months in bottle. 2 Frassinelli Brother Gianluca and sister Roberta continue the tradition of their parents producing tiny batches of wines from some of the most prized vineyard sites within the Conegliano-Valdobbiadene DOCG. Depending on the wine, production varies from around 1,000 cases to as little as 200 cases per wine. Artisanal indeed. The vineyards in this area are some of the most picturesque in Italy. They cling to steep hillsides with tiny villages dotting the landscape. The climate here is generally mild and the soils clay and limestone. The Frassinelli family makes a variety of wines, including special “Rive” wines; single vineyard, single vintage wines of distinction. PLCB Merlot Veneto 2017 12 750 11.89 Tenuta Fernanda Cappello Fernanda Cappello, an architect, who was fascinated and charmed by a land that was so individual and tough, spends all her time producing wine. Her passion, competence and professionalism is constantly growing, and these - together with the crucial contribution of highly-motivated experts and colleagues who are proud of their work - are the lifeblood of her energetic management of the estate. The Fernanda Cappello estate is to the north of the D.O.C. Friuli Grave area: where the flood plains and the moraine hills (between Lestans and Sequals) can be compared to the "graves" of Bordeaux. The grapes are harvested mechanically in the early morning. They are then quickly cooled to a low temperature and allowed to macerate at a controlled temperature to capture the aromatic components of the skins. A light pressing follows and the must obtained is cleared by static decantation. Fermentation is temperature controlled in stainless steel. At the end of the fermentation the wine is allowed to rest on the lees for at least six months. PLCB Pinot Grigio Friuli 2015 12 750 12.89 Appellation: Friuli Grave DOC PLCB Prosecco Brut Friuli NV 12 750 11.49 Grape: Glera Appellation: Prosecco DOC Method: Charmat 3 Col di Lamo Col di Lamo covers eight hectares of land in Montalcino. Owner/Operator Giovanna Neri studied law in school but got her passion for wine making from her father. She treats her wines with the same love and care as a mother would a child. Col di Lamo’s label, the delicate profile of a women’s face was designed to showcase the feminine touch Giovanna brings to the classic styles of Montalcino wines. PLCB Rosso di Montalcino Tuscany 2014 6 750 19.99 Grape: Sangiovese Appelation: Rosso di Montalcino Vinification & Ageing: Long maceration of the pomace with pumping over of the cap, natural fermentation. Aged in Slavonian Oak Barrel. HIGHLAND FINE WINE MARCH 2021 HALF CASE- REDS ZINGARA MONTEPULCIANO 2017, ABRUZZO, ITALY $12.99 (MIXED) Abruzzo is known as the greenest region in Europe, with more than one-third of its nearly 4,200 square miles set aside for national parks and nature preserves. The remaining public lands have a reputation for diverse agricultural production – and notably cultivation of Montepulciano. The grape ranges widely throughout its native turf of Tuscany and, ironically, is not grown in the vineyards around the village of Montepulciano. Zingara is big – leading one to think it spent some time in oak. Not the case: this all stainless steel production shows off the power and character of Montepulciano with intense aromas of red fruits and spices. The palate is full, dry and harmonious with pleasant tannins. SANGUINHAL CEREJEIRAS TINTO 2018, LISBON, PORTUGAL $12.99 (MIXED) One of the oldest wineries in Lisbon, Portugal, Agricola Sanguinhal was founded In 1926, by Abel Pereira da Fonseca. He was an innovator, with a passion for his family, grape-growing, and winemaking. He planted Sanguinhal’s first vines on virgin land, which has been farmed without the use of any harsh chemicals ever since. Blend of Castelão, Aragonez (local name for Tempranillo) and Touriga Nacional. Rustic and approachable, this dark gem is full of crisp and floral plum, blueberry and herbal notes. VICUS AGLIANICO 2015, IRIPINA, ITALY $17.99 (MIXED) Italian wines are recognized around the world, but it is the specific personality of each region and commune that makes them all exciting to explore. It is here, in the Irpinia region, where the ancient Greeks began cultivating grape varieties suited to the volcanic soils before the Roman Empire had even begun.

Happy drinking Introducing our new Staff Member Many of you will have noticed a new face in the shop and behind the wheel of the van, but just in case you haven’t met him yet, here is a little introduction to our latest member of staff, Bob Alsop. When did you develop an interest in wine? When the first good Australian wines appeared on our shelves in the Eighties. What is your favourite style of wine? Dry reds in general, with Bordeaux and Rioja being my favourites. What is the best drinking experience you have had? On holiday in France when the Exchange Rate was in our favour. And the worst? A Sunday Evening in Wales, years ago. All the pubs were shut and there was nowhere to drink! Who would be your ideal dinner party guest? The regulars from ‘Have I got News for you’. • Kobrand Wine & Spirits | Sauvignon Friuli Grave DOC 2016
FERNANDO PIGHIN & FIGLI Sauvignon Friuli Grave DOC 2016 REGION: Italy / Friuli-Venezia Giulia GRAPES: 100% Sauvignon Blanc The gravelly, sandy subsoil of Grave del Friuli forces the roots of the vine to grow deep into the earth, resulting in richer fruit. The grapes for all of Pighin’s wines are handpicked and pressed in state-of-the-art pneumatic presses. Select grapes of optimum ripeness are gently pressed immediately after harvest and undergo a 14- to 18-day cold-temperature fermentation in stainless steel tanks. As there is no malolactic fermentation or oak aging, the finished product is a beautifully pure expression of Sauvignon Blanc grapes. HARVEST NOTE The 2016 season was a bit turbulent but the resulting wines are wonderful. The temperatures in February and March were higher than past seasons. In mid-April, the weather conditions drastically changed. The area saw a temperature drop and abundant rainfalls that lasted until the middle of June. Luckily, the weather significantly improved during the months of July and August with sunny days and good ventilation, alternating with moderate rains and warm temperatures. This ideal weather situation allowed for an optimum ripeness in the grapes. The 2016 harvest began in early September with perfect grape health and natural sugar record values. The obtained musts showed excellent organoleptic values with particular regard to sugar content and acid balance. After fermentation, the musts rested on their lees until the middle of January with lees stirring every 10 days. The 2016 vintage has shown itself to be an excellent year! TASTING NOTE Shows intense, persistent aromas of tomato leaves, with wild green peppers and elderflower notes.
