BACKGROUND Members of the TGF­β superfamily exert their biological effects by binding to heteromeric complexes of a type I and a type II serine­threonine kinase receptor, both of which are essential for . type IIB is a type II receptor that mediates multiple signals for transforming growth factor­beta (TGF­beta) family members including Activin, Nodal, Bmp7, Gdf1, Gdf3, (Gdf8), and Gdf11. Through alternative mRNA splicing, multiple Activin RIIB isoforms can also be generated.
