On the 1st October 1918 during an attack on enemy positions east of Manieres, this N.C.O. who was in charge of a left flank platoon, showed most magnificent courage and ability in the handling of his men. At a very critical stage during an enemy counter attack, although wounded, this N.C.O. remaned with his platoon and organized a defensive attack. He personally supervised the retirement of his men under intense enemy fire, and by his splendid example and excellent command enabled his platoon to reach the defensive line without being surrounded and cut off. After satisfying himself that the enemy attack had been stopped, he handed over his command and went back to have his wounds dressed. His conduct throught-out was magnificent and he inspired his men in a most remarkable manner. 13/2987 Sgt BAKER, John Francis Bushman 10th Rf AMR F Baker (f) Kohukohu 21484 Rfm BAKER, JohnThomas Bushman 16th Rf H Coy 4th Bn NZRB Mrs J Baker (m) Kohukohu 2/2961 Dvr BAKER, Fairlie N Clerk 11th Rf FA How Batt F J Fairlie (f) Opononi 1916 Baker, Fairlie Cornwall Park Ave, Epsom Clerk 70035 Pte BAKER, William Farmer V4 80/4 John F Baker (f) Kohukohu ~ 3 ~ 11/1889 Tpr BARBER, Hellard s Rawene, Nth Ak 8th Rf WMR Mrs P Barber (m) Inglis St Seatown Well 69674 Pte BARBER, John Harrison Bushman 34th Rf D Coy Otago Inf Reg H Barber (f) Wanganuku, Hokianga 19432 Pte BARBER, Puru Bushman 12th Maori Rf Mrs Tangiwai Pakia (m) Mangamuka 12/880 Private BARRINGTON, Albert John s Kohukohu MB Auckland Infantry Battalion Miss E Barrington (s) c/- W Warner, Gisborne KILLED IN ACTION France 3rd July 1916 CITE BONJEAN MILITARY CEMETERY Armentieres, France.
