Hymenoptera: Ichneumonidae) from Guilan Province, Northern Iran
A contribution to the knowledge of the Ichneumon wasps (Hymenoptera: Ichneumonidae) from Guilan Province, Northern Iran Hassan Ghahari & Reijo Jussila Abstract. In a total of 28 ichneumonid species from 22 genera and 6 subfamilies (Cremastinae, Cryptinae, Ichneumoninae, Pimplinae, Rhyssinae and Tryphoninae) were collected from Guilan province, northern Iran. Of these, one species Schizopyga podagrica Gravenhorst is new record for Iran. Samenvatting. Een bijdrage tot de kennis van de Ichenomindae (Hymenoptera) van de provincie Guilan, Noord-Iran In het totaal werden 28 soorten Ichneumonidae behorend tot 22 genera en 6 subfamilies (Cremastinae, Cryptinae, Ichneumoninae, Pimplinae, Rhyssinae en Tryphoninae) verzameld in de provincie Guilan, Noord-Iran. PEIGLER Abstract: Numerous records of parasites reared from Saturniidae are given, several of which are previously unpublished host-parasite associations. Records are from several regions of the U.S.A. and Central America, with a few from Hong Kong and one from France. Parasites reported here belong to the dipterous family Tachinidae and the hymenopterous families Ichneumonidae, Braconidae, Chalcididae, Perilampidae, Torymidae, Eupel- midae, and Eulophidae. Neuere Beobachtungen über Parasitismus bei Saturniidae (Lepidoptera) Zusammenfassung:Es werden verschiedene Beobachtungen über Parasiten, die aus Saturniiden gezüchtet wurden, gegeben, von denen einige bisher noch unbekannte Wirt-Parasit-Beziehungen darstellen. Die Beobachtungen stammen aus verschiedenen Regionen der USA und Zentralamerikas, einige aus Hongkong und eine aus Frankreich. Die hier genannten Parasiten gehören zu der Dipterenfamilie Tachinidae und den Hymenopterenfa- milien Ichneumonidae, Braconidae, Chalcididae, Perilampidae, Torymidae, Eupelmidae und Eulophidae. Insbesondere wird auf die Notwendigkeit, alle erreichbaren Nachweise von Parasitismus bei Schmetterlingslarven zu dokumentieren und die Parasiten von entsprechenden Fachleuten bestimmen zu lassen, hingewiesen. Sorgfäl tige Zuchtarbeit ist nötig, um einwandfreie Zuordnung der Parasiten zu ihrem jeweiligen Wirt zu ermöglichen; am besten eignet sich hierfür die Einzelhaltung parasitismusverdächtigter Larven. -

Life history evolution in the parasitoid Hymenoptera Ruth Elizabeth Traynor This thesis was submitted for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy University of York Department of Biology 2004 Abstract This thesis addresses life history evolution of the parasitoid Hymenoptera. It aims to identify assumptions that should be incorporated into parasitoid life history theory and the predictions that theory should aim to make. Both two species and multi-species comparative studies as well as up-to-date phylogenetic information are employed to investigate these issues. Anecdotal observations suggest that solitary parasitoids have narrower host ranges than closely related gregarious species. There are several possible reasons for this; for example gregarious species may be able to exploit larger bodied hosts because they can fully consume the host, which may be essential for successful pupation to occur. Comparative laboratory experiments between two closely related species of Aphaereta, one of which is solitary and the other gregarious, show no difference in the extent of host range. This study does, however, suggest that differences in the realized niche that each species occupies in the field may result from life history differences between the species. These differences may themselves have arisen due to solitary or gregarious development. The first multi-species study in the thesis uses a data set, compiled for the parasitic Hymenoptera by Blackburn (1990), to address factors that may influence body size and clutch size. This study builds on previous analyses of the data (see Blackburn 1990, 1991a/b, Mayhew & Blackburn 1999) through the use of up-to-date phylogenetic information. Evidence is found that the host stage attacked by a parasitoid is associated with both body and clutch size, due to the amount of resources available for the developing parasitoids. -

STRIVE Report Series No. 3 Science, Technology, Research and Innovation for the Environment (STRIVE) 2007-2013 The Science, Technology, Research and Innovation for the Environment (STRIVE) programme covers the period 2007 to 2013. The Value of Parasitic The programme comprises three key measures: Sustainable Development, Cleaner Production and Hymenoptera as Indicators Environmental Technologies, and A Healthy Environment; together with two supporting measures: EPA Environmental Research Centre (ERC) and Capacity & Capability Building. The seven principal of Biological Diversity thematic areas for the programme are Climate Change; Waste, Resource Management and Chemicals; Water Quality and the Aquatic Environment; Air Quality, Atmospheric Deposition and Noise; Impacts on Biodiversity; Soils and Land-use; and Socio-economic Considerations. In addition, other emerging issues will be addressed as the need arises. The funding for the programme (approximately €100 million) comes from the Environmental Research Sub-Programme of the National Development Plan (NDP), the Inter-Departmental Committee for the Strategy for Science, Technology and Innovation (IDC-SSTI); and EPA core funding and co-funding by STRIVE economic sectors.
