JUNE 2019 FACING the FUTURE of CLIMATE CHANGE He Times, They Are A-Changing, As a Song Says JUNE 2019 FACING THE FUTURE OF CLIMATE CHANGE he times, they are a-changing, as a song says. So is the climate. This month, NJTV explores climate change and its impact on New Jersey in a new special, Facing the Future, produced by the NJTV News team as part of the PBS national Peril and T Promise: The Challenge of Climate Change initiative. The half-hour documentary, hosted by NJTV News Anchor Mary Alice Williams, will report on the topic of climate change from several vantage-points. The first will assess the over-arching local and global climate issues and threats, including the prophesied “doomsday scenario.” Among those experts lending their expertise on the subject is Dr. Robert Kopp, Director of the Institute of Earth, Ocean and Atmospheric Sciences of Rutgers University in New Brunswick. The program continues by digging deeper into what the topic means to the Garden State, examining local efforts to combat climate change and revealing plans for the future. Learn how New Jersey communities are working to protect themselves from the effects of climate change, from new building standards at Newark Airport to protecting tidal marshes and oyster reefs and planting more trees. There is also a case study of Hoboken, a city hit especially hard during Hurricane Sandy in 2012 as two-thirds of it is in what the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) has designated a “flood zone”. Facing the Future tracks that city’s post-Sandy ecovery projects and discusses its future planning efforts with the city’s Environmental Services Director Jennifer Gonzales about projects from rainwater collection and paver-Installation to converting concrete parking lots into playgrounds. To keep the discussion going, NJTV is hosting a community forum in Cape May this July on the topic, showing a clips from the documentary. TOP: JOSEPH SINNOTT Want to know more about climate change? In a third season of Pasta & Politics with Nick Acocella, the Politifax editor combines his two passions in a delicious talk show that will have viewers salivating for what’s on the stove as well as the juice of the conversation. W WIn the first few episodes, former State Senators Ray Lesniak and Joe Kyrillos show off their culinary skills in the kitchen. Lesniak, the second longest serving state legislator in history, dives into creating a meatball lasagna and recounts his involvement in the panorama of progressive issues like marriage equality and environmental protection. Kyrillos brings some flavor from his own family to the program — his brother’s summer marinara rigatoni recipe — and wittily observes his own political career history and motivation. Between debating beach replenishment and Superstorm Sandy relief, Congressman Frank Pallone whisks eggs, pecorino and pepper and sautés pancetta for a hearty take on spaghetti carbonara. To combat the rich creaminess of that dish, Congressman Donald Payne, Jr. whips up a heart-healthy no-carb pasta with roasted cauliflower, while speaking of his admiration and respect for those he has served with while representing New Jersey’s 10th Congressional District. A sure-to-please Italian meal of seared scallops over linguine with capers and lemon juice is prepped by Congressman Leonard Lance. After tasting his creation, Nick Acocella asked him about the instances when Lance defied his party leadership in both the State Legislature and Congress when his principles demanded it.

  • SOCIAL ANXIETY Acebook, Twitter, Instagram, Snapchat
MARCH 2020 SOCIAL ANXIETY acebook, Twitter, Instagram, Snapchat. Social networking platforms like these connect billions of people each day, spreading information instantly on a global level. A connected world seemed like a great idea in the early days of Silicon Valley. But now it’s clear that social networks are dangerously good at spreading fake news and extreme views — F and igniting information wars, something that’s especially vexing in an election year. Historian and author Niall Ferguson explores the fascinating history of social networks in Niall Ferguson’s Networld, a new three-part series based on his bestselling book, The Square and the Tower: Networks and Power, from the Freemasons to Facebook. From the Protestant Reformation and 17th-century witch hunts, through the American Revolution and the nightmare visions of Orwell’s 1984, Ferguson examines the intersection of society, communication, technology, and cultural movements throughout the ages, revealing how human behavior, disruptive technology and the desire for profit can energize communication, create and destroy hierarchies, and ultimately change the world. Ferguson unpacks how social networks operate through conversations with network theorists, social scientists and data analysts. He examines historical examples illustrating the parallels between railroad and telegraph titan Jay Gould, publishing giant William Randolph Hearst, and Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg. Former Google CEO Eric Schmidt; former Facebook product manager Antonio Garcia Martinez; Stanley McChrystal, former head of Joint Special Operations Command in Iraq; and Alex Stamos, former head of security at Facebook, are among those sharing insights. Discover how the worldwide web shifted from a decentralized, not-for-profit entity to a highly profitable network controlled by a tiny elite selling our attention to advertisers, and how our democracies may be threatened by forces that exploit and weaponize social networks.
