RESUMO Este trabalho pondera sobre algumas noções de gênero, sexualidade e corpo na Antiguidade Oriental e Ocidental (englobando em especial as civilizações da Suméria, Assíria, Babilónia, Pérsia, Roma, Grécia e Bizâncio), e toma como objeto de estudo as representações que cada uma dessas sociedades possuíam acerca dos eunucos. Para isso, elege o corpo documental compreendido entre os séculos V a.C e XII d. C. e, com o apoio teórico dos estudos de gênero e sexualidade, analisa as experiências corporais, sexuais e identitárias de homens que foram castrados ou decidiram deliberadamente se emascularem com a intenção de mudarem sua circunstância e/ou estatuto social. Por meio da abordagem metodológica da análise crítica do discurso, explora as fontes a partir de seus aspectos enquanto textos literários e enquanto interpretações subjetivas concernentes a um contexto histórico-cultural específico de cada espaço e tempo. ABSTRACT This work considers some notions of gender, sexuality, and body in Eastern and Western Antiquity (encompassing especially the civilizations of Sumer, Assyria, Babylon, Persia, Rome, Greece, and Byzantium), and takes as its object of study the representations that each of these societies had about eunuchs. For this, it chooses the documentary body comprised between the 5th century BC and XII AC. and, with the theoretical support of gender and sexuality studies, analyzes the bodily, sexual and identity experiences of men who have been castrated or deliberately decided to emasculate themselves with the intention of changing their circumstances and/or social status. Through the methodological approach of critical discourse analysis, it explores sources from their aspects as literary texts and as subjective interpretations concerning a specific historical- cultural context of each space and time. Mesmo assim, os efeitos dessa prática nas vidas sociopolíticas e culturais dos homens que passam por essa mudança biológica ainda continuam insuficientemente compreendidas. O entendimento do fenômeno da castração se torna ainda mais complexo se atentarmos para o facto de o próprio conceito de sexualidade ser demasiado contemporâneo. Ora, esse conceito, bem como os conceitos de heterossexualidade e homossexualidade surge somente no início do século XIX.1 Conclui-se então que, para as sociedades antigas, o entendimento da sexualidade não apresenta valor epistemológico. Assim sendo, as concepções desses indivíduos acerca do corpo e do sexo são inevitavelmente diferentes das que se têm nos dias atuais. Por conseguinte, estaríamos a cometer um anacronismo e chegaríamos a conclusões inexatas se fôssemos atribuir noções pertinentes à nossa sociedade para essas outras, de outra época. Logo, a aplicação do termo sexualidade, entendido no presente estudo como uma atividade fundamentalmente cultural e historicamente variável de acordo com os contextos socioculturais de cada povo, só se torna apropriada na medida em que se analisa de que forma os valores culturais daquelas sociedades antigas interferem na maneira como as pessoas se relacionavam com o próprio corpo e com os seus desejos e sentimentos. Isso inclui, claramente, as diversas práticas e identidades sexuais construídas culturalmente em cada uma delas. Além de mudar um indivíduo biologicamente, a castração resulta também em uma aparência exteriormente diferente da de um homem que desenvolve

Jordanes was ethnically Gothic - and yet he also claimed a Roman identity. Writing from Constantinople in 551, he penned two Latin histories on the Gothic and Roman pasts respectively. Crucially, Jordanes wrote while Goths and Romans clashed in the imperial war to reclaim the Italian homeland that had been under Gothic rule since 493. That a Roman Goth wrote about Goths while Rome was at war with Goths is significant and has no analogue in the ancient record. I argue that it was precisely this conflict which prompted Jordanes’ historical inquiry. Jordanes, though, has long been considered a mere copyist, and seldom treated as an historian with ideas of his own. And the few scholars who have treated Jordanes as an original author have dampened the significance of his Gothicness by arguing that barbarian ethnicities were evanescent and subsumed by the gravity of a Roman political identity. They hold that Jordanes was simply a Roman who can tell us only about Roman things, and supported the Roman emperor in his war against the Goths.

    The Andreios Eunuch-Commander Narses: Sign of a Decoupling of Martial Virtues and Masculinity in the Early Byzantine Empire? Michael Edward Stewart University of Queensland Abstract: This paper looks at the place of the sixth-century Byzantine general Narses (c. 480–573) in the history of Byzantine gender. Certainly, it has always been important for ancient and modern historians to emphasise Narses’ eunuchism. Indeed, for many modern scholars, Narses’ identity as a castrate has been more important for study than his military deeds and political achievements that proved ephemeral. For some, the presence of a eunuch in such an essential military role indicates a turning away from codes of generalship based on traditional martial courage and manliness. This paper questions such a view, suggesting that Byzantium had a much more flexible notion of eunuchs’ gender status than some recent scholarship allows. Indeed, it suggests that Narses fits into a continuing hegemony of traditional masculine values based on the supremacy of Byzantine men’s martial virtues The sixth-century Byzantine general Narses (c. 480–573) has long earned historians’ respect.1 He deserves this acclaim since his major victories over the Goths in 552 and versus the Franks and Alamanni in 554 helped to secure the Emperor Justinian I’s (ruled 527–565) retaking of Italy from the Goths after an arduous nineteen-year struggle.2 So too did Narses perform admirably for twelve years in his role as prefect 1 Michael Edward Stewart, ‘The Andreios Eunuch Commander Narses’ of Italy. Having said that, please note that the term „Byzantine‟ is one that was not used in the time of the Empire. They referred to themselves as Romans.
