The Garden’s heavy clay soil has been greatly amended with expanded shale to improve drainage and reduce the incidence of diseases and pests, especially nematodes. EIt really started to take shape in the 1930s with the addition of plants collected during the Garden’s expeditions to the Andes. These expeditions focused on Peru and Chile, with forays into Bolivia. Botanical and personal highlights of these expeditions are documented in Garden Director T. Harper Goodspeed’s book, Plant Hunters of the Andes, published in 1961. The most recent desert expedition was to Baja California in 1986, led by then curator Dr. James Affolter and included Horticulturists Kurt Zadnik and Roger Raiche and current volunteer Fred Dortort. -

Thus, this study aimed to investigate management techniques used by residents of four rural communities in the municipality of Cabaceiras, Paraíba, Northeast Brazil. Only residents who claimed to perform some type of cacti management participated in this study, totaling 17 informants. Pilosocereus gounellei (F.A.C. Weber) Byles & Rowley subsp. gounellei, Cereus jamacaru DC. subsp. jamacaru, Pilosocereus pachycladus F. Ritter, Tacinga palmadora (Britton & Rose) N.P. Taylor & Stuppy, and Melocactus zehntneri (Britton & Rose) Luetzelb. Ex situ and in situ management techniques were recorded. The first one performed by transplantation of propagules and the second one by tolerance. The species propagation is carried out using shoots and vegetative parts. Of the species identified, only Cereus jamacaru subsp. jamacaru has more than one form of management. In addition to management, informants use rudimentary techniques such as burning the vegetative parts for fodder purposes. It listed the ‘majority of the newnames [of succulent plants] published the previous year’. The first issue, edited by Roan himself with the help of A.J.A Uitewaal (1899−1963), was published for IOS by the National Cactus & Succulent Society,and the next four (with Gordon RowleyasAssociate and later Joint Editor) by Roan’snewly formed British Section of the IOS. For issues 5−12, Gordon Rowleybecame the sole editor.Issue 6 was published by IOS with assistance by the Acclimatisation Garden Pinya de Rosa, Costa Brava,Spain, owned by Fernando Riviere de Caralt, another founder member of IOS. In 1957, an arrangement for closer cooperation with the International Association of Plant Taxonomy (IAPT) was reached, and RPS issues 7−22 were published in their Regnum Ve getabile series with the financial support of the International Union of Biological Sciences (IUBS), of which IOS remains a member to this day.Issues 23−25 were published by AbbeyGarden Press of Pasadena, California, USA, after which IOS finally resumed full responsibility as publisher with issue 26 (for 1975). Accepted: August 6, 2015 ABSTRACT Recent studies have shown that pollen analyses of natural substrates can produce data valuable for understanding the local pollen productivity and dispersal, deposition, and preservation potential of pollen grains. In this study, we aimed to acquire novel information about the dynamics and preservation of pollen in Caatinga environment through the palynological study of moss polsters. Samples of moss polsters in soil (MPS) and on rock (MPR) were collected from the Canudos Biological Station in the Bahia State (Brazil) and subjected to standard chemical treatments for the extraction of pollen residues. In total, 372 pollen types were recorded from the samples of which the taxonomical affinity of 140 was determined. The most represented families were Fabaceae (23 pollen types/16.42%) and Asteraceae (12 pollen types/8.57%). The MPS samples had a higher pollen concentration (21,042.04 pollen grains/cm²) than the MPR samples (7,829.35 pollen grains/cm²). On the other hand, the MPR samples had a greater diversity (68.26% of the identified pollen types). Qualitative analysis showed that the plants of shrub and subshrub habits had the grea- test representation among the pollen types (35.0%). Overall, moss polsters proved to be excellent natural air pollen collectors in Caatinga environment, provided they had moist microhabitats for their development. -

30th Inter-City Cactus and Succulent Show and Sale August 8 - 9 2015 9:00 - 5:00 Los Angeles County Arboretum th The 30 Annual Show! The Show has been spectacular for every one of those years. Every year we get people coming back for the 10th or 20th time, and every year we get people wandering in by chance, who come back repeatedly, join a club and become part of the hobby. The Show is the most inclusive of any, with the highest quality plants seen anyplace, and at the same time has maintained the ability to attract entrants from novice, advanced and open categories in about equal numbers. The sales area has grown to be the best anywhere, with record sales year after year, with people flying into LA just to attend the Show. We have repeat attendees form India, Japan and Korea, along with frequent visitors from all over Europe. Buses come from San Diego, Fresno and Phoenix. The Show now lives on in perpetuity thanks to the displays on YouTube and Facebook. Pictures of the Inter-City Show now appear in every digital medium, allowing the show to be seen and enjoyed around the world. The Show is a success not because of the plants, but because of the wonderful volunteers, entrants, vendors, and not the least because of the assistance and support of the entire Los Angeles Arboretum staff. I count periodically, and there are over 100 people who participate in one way or another in helping put on this Show. We need the support of every one of them this year. -

El objetivo general de este estudio fue evaluar tanto los niveles y la distribución de la variabilidad genética en E. terschekii a distintas escalas espaciales, utilizando distintos tipos de marcadores moleculares como así también evaluar su papel como especie indicadora de la diversidad taxonómica de las cactáceas del noroeste de Argentina. La hipótesis planteada es que los factores históricos y ecológicos se verán reflejados en la estructura genética a distintas escalas espaciales de las poblaciones de E. terscheckii, una especie de cactus columnar que caracteriza los ambientes áridos y semiáridos del sur de los Andes Centrales de Sudamérica, y cuyos patrones de diversidad genética pueden ser utilizados como sustituto de la diversidad taxonómica de la familia Cactaceae.
