A Sonnet of Unrequited Love and Heartbreak By Jennie Czahor

I remember the blood across my cheek, so much at one time, I seem to tire. I can’t keep fighting like this, what I seek and nothing can seem to stop the fire.

I’ve turned pale from fighting so long. I’m weak, jaded even, but can’t complain. Still, I continue on, as She, I’m strong, though every glance towards me brings up the pain.

I try to pick up the pieces often and tell myself, “It’ll be over soon.” Katerin Terranova LaSoledad But the agony won’t seem to soften and out of loneliness, I’m left to brood.

Is it me that keeps deserved love away, or them of this generation that stray?

April 2013 Steinmetz Star 11 12 Art & Star Poetry Contest Winners A Future By Iriz Ilumin

Today, I lost faith in a generation Today’s generation I watched compassion die In a garbled death-whisper of apathy Through a liquid crystal window I glimpsed the future A future... Where the people do not believe in pain Because they cannot imagine Ever feeling it themselves

A future... Where the people cut lifelines Katerin Terranova I am Afro Colombian Because they cannot imagine Ever needing one themselves

A future... Where half of the world wants to die And the other half cheers from the sidelines Nobody looking past their own angst

Today, I saw a plague infect a populace Today’s society I watched as a virus descended to infiltrate minds Controlling words on the tongues of children On a glass highway for light I glimpsed the future

A future... Where the seeds of every thought Are spoken to the breeze Taking root in waiting ears

A future.. Katerin Terranova Moonlight Where every word spreads the infection And all attempts at a cure Are laughed at or ignored into submission

A future... Where every word spreads disease And the other half contracts it Nobody looking further than a spittle Fanny Reyes WHen I was Human in breaths of the build up in lungs

Mommy By Tiffany Kolodziej

Mommy, I scraped my knee. Can you kiss it and make it better? The blood is scary. Mommy, look! I got an A on my spelling test! Are you proud of me? The teacher says I did a really good job. Mommy, look, I drew our family. Do you like it? Of course you do, Despite the fact that you’re not in that drawing. Mommy, why won’t you wake up and play outside with me? You hit that crooked bulb again Because that’s the only important thing to you. Mommy, where’d you go? It’s been a few days. Mom, why won’t you answer my calls? I just want to know how you are, Where you are, What you’re doing, cause I’m nothing without you. Mom, I miss you. Roberto Alarcon Yo Soy Guacamay Does it even matter? Mother, why is turning your brain into mush more important than me? It’s okay, you’ll still float home tomorrow at one am. The days keep getting longer; Sarah Landor Muzzeled The nights keep getting colder, And you’re still not all here. You are physically, but them drugs have gotten too good, Haven’t they?

There are no more doors open for you. I’ve become a callous to your existence. Linda, are you happy now? Are those bars comforting enough? Linda, is the orange jumpsuit flattering? I hope it makes you feel good inside: Knowing that your kids have completely disowned you. You remember your youngest son, right? Yeah, he doesn’t mention you. He doesn’t ask about you, And I’m glad Because there was never anything intriguing to begin with. Linda, do you know who I am? I’m your daughter. Rosanna Quixito Combining my Two Cultures I’m who used to be your personal rag doll. Linda, who are you? Rosanna Quixito Putting Myself into Place You’ve faded along with the evening sun. You gave life and then forgot that you had. You turned your back instead of being that role model, Destroyed innocent little children, Sacrificed souls to get that perfect high. You’re the definition of human waste. I hope you use your time in captivity to reflect on all of the mess you made, But those are just hopes Because I know all you will think about is the next rush. Is that all we were to you? Another rush? You make me sick. And you will never be forgiven, Linda, Not even when you lie six feet under me.
