Vol. 90, No. 6 Thursday, August 15, 2013 50 cents Levy County Deputies Back to K-9 Robiek – Way Down Upon School at Bronson HS for Threat By Barbara Snow Response Training

Levy County Sheriff’s Office deputies went back to school at Bronson High School recently. This time it was for specialized training designed to simulate responding to threats on a school campus setting for the 2013-2014 school year. The special exercise is part of ongoing scenario-based training for all Levy County schools done with the cooperation of School Superintendent, Bob Hastings, and incorporates instructional sessions between the LCSO and teachers. The instructors were Lt. Scott Finnen and School Resource Deputy, Grant Sandlin. Deputies from the Patrol, Detention, Criminal Investigations and Community Resource Divisions all participated in this training session.

Written by Kelly Holt for magazine TheNewAmerican.com

Someone has finally produced a documentary challenging the dominant thinking in America about race, particularly the notion that the Welfare State helps emancipate minorities from the slavery of poverty. In partnership with FreedomWorks and Ground Floor Video, black leader C.L. Bryant, a former NAACP chapter leader and Democrat liberal, has produced Runaway Slave. This 108-minute film posits the idea that black Americans, by buying into progressivism, and the mindset of entitlements, have traded one form of slavery for another. Bryant, a Baptist minister and Tea Party leader opens the film by asking if African Americans, nearly a half century after Martin Luther King proclaimed “Free at last!” are indeed free. And why, he ponders, are they still angry? His search for the answer forms the basis of this film as he travels from one coast to the other interviewing black Americans, activists, political and religious leaders attempted to legislate improvements for blacks. In support of the film’s premise that American blacks are living Bryant also recounts part of his own personal story. Early in his career, when he was in modern slavery, former presidential candidate Herman Cain is heard in the film claiming asked by the NAACP to endorse an agenda that included abortion, he found his political “The size, and scope, and reach of government is the new plantation.” And Star Parker, philosophy in conflict with his faith, and marks that realization as the beginning of his famous for having made a personal transformation from being dependent on welfare to a journey to . Among the nation’s 200 largest metro areas, Ocala/Marion County ranks fifth in expected fastest rate of employment growth through 2015, according to research firm Moody’s Analytics. The findings were included in this week’s Forbes Magazine annual rankings of Best Places for Business and Careers. With a projected growth rate of 3.4 percent, Ocala was the only Florida metro to make Forbes’ Top 10 Job Growth list. Not surprisingly, Texas dominated job growth projections, nabbing seven of the top slots. Ocala’s overall ranking of 178 on the Best Places list reflects negative job-growth from 2009 through 2011 and modest growth through much of 2012. Beginning in December 2012, however, Ocala led all of Florida’s metros for six consecutive months with the highest job-growth rate, hitting a high of 3.6 percent in May with an increase of 3,600 jobs over-the- year. Levy County School District school food service managers and employees recently joined nine other north Florida school districts as a part of the First Annual Beyond the Lunch Lady conference at Union High School in Lake Butler, Florida. More than 350 school food service professionals attended the conference, which focused on new menu development, kitchen safety, culinary cutting skills, planning for retirement, personal health and well-being. “These ladies and gentlemen are getting ready for school to begin and are honing their culinary skills and knowledge to provide the very best for their students this coming school year,” said Sue Tatum, conference organizer with Vinca Marketing & Communication. The participating food managers from each of the 10 school districts prepared from “scratch” nutritious, fresh and easy to prepare menu items for all the conference attendees. The menu items included: Broccoli & Cauliflower Salad; Pinto Bean Salad; Watermelon Salad; Squash Gallettes; Poached/Herb Infused Breast of Chicken; Corn Ratatouille, Roasted Garlic Mashed Cauliflower; Roasted Fingerling Potatoes from Hastings, Florida; and fresh Peach Blueberry Cobbler. Approximately 25 children from Bronson, Chiefland and Williston came to the event which is part of the summer program of the Bronson Parks and Recreation Department. LCSO Sgt. Max Long spoke to the children about personal safety at school and home. Topics included drug abuse, alcohol abuse, firearm safety and bullying. Deputy Kevin Kinik spoke to the children about his K-9 partner, Rossi, and provided demonstrations of Rossi’s training and discipline. Rossi showcased his talents and ability to detect different odors and how he can take down a dangerous suspect. — information submitted. WANTED - Little Cowboys and Cowgirls

Levy County Emergency Management Director Mark Johnson presented Levy County Sheriff Bobby McCallum with 4 battery-operated chainsaws to outfit the Levy County Sheriff’s Office Deputies with necessary equipment for storm situations. This new purchase resulted from a suggestion from Deputy Jeremy Dean. Concerned with maintaining gas operated saws and the fumes associated with transporting mixed gasoline, Deputy Dean researched and located this alternative. The taxpayers along with LCSO, the Emergency Operations Center and the Levy County Road Department will reap the benefits of these new tools. As we move forward into the hurricane season, these new saws can be more safely transported and stored in LCSO vehicles. This allows faster utilization to assist the Road Department in rapidly clearing blocked roads during storm events. — information provided by Lt. Scott Tummond, LCSO. Firefighters Practice Car Fire Suppression at New Public Safety Complex

Levy County Department of Public Safety Firefighters from Station 2 (Morriston), Station 4 (Fowlers Bluff), Station 5 (Rosewood), Station 6 (Yankeetown), and Bronson Fire Department took advantage of the New Public Safety Complex to train on passenger vehicle fire suppression tactics on August 5 and 6. The training consisted of working with firefighters from different stations and night training. This training provides each firefighter with the opportunity to work with firefighters from different stations, helping to understand the dynamics needed for adapting to change during fire suppression activities. The training also included a nighttime component that gives the firefighter the ability to improve and learn how to operate during night operations. When disaster strikes, Levy County emergency responders urged citizens to be prepared to take care of themselves for at least 72 hours before help is on its way. That was the message delivered at an Emergency Preparedness Seminar held at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS) Thursday (Aug. 8). “Most people don’t plan to fail; they fail to plan,” said Clay Connolly, Deputy Chief of Police in Williston. “Preparedness is more than just a good idea, it quickly becomes a necessity.” Along with Connolly, other presenters included David Knowles, Director of the Levy County Public Safety Department; John MacDonald, Levy County Emergency Management; and Danny Wallace, Assistant Chief of Williston Fire Department. Together these officials focused on what every citizen needs to provide to ensure their own survival and recovery from an emergency. “Regardless of our capacities, expertise and equipment, when we share an emergency such as a hurricane, fire or flood, our resources quickly deplete and our systems frequently break down,” Connolly said. “Before you leave tonight, I hope everyone asks themselves a single question: ‘What if I have an emergency and nobody comes? That is what you need to prepare for.’” Darrell Janson, lay minister for the LDS Church in Williston, said hosting this seminar goes right along with the church’s focus on being prepared. should a hurricane knock out power and other vital resources for survival. Water, food, “We as Latter-day Saints have been taught for generations to be prepared personally and as cash, clothes, self-charging radio and/or flashlights, first aid kit, car chargers for cell families,” Janson said. “We would like to help not just ourselves, but also our community to phones, waterproof matches and batteries are just a few of the things recommended to have be free from the fear that comes from not being prepared for difficult times." available. Examples of a 72-hour kit were on display at the program. Participants were provided “Please don’t be complacent,” said David Knowles. “We have a lot to offer our citizens but a handout with a checklist for items that would be extremely beneficial to have on hand resources are limited in a disaster.” Cowboying and Rattlesnakes

One day Ms. Jean was visiting Juanita Faurot, Leo’s wife, who lived next door to us on the TM Britt Ranch. Marlene, our oldest daughter, and her friend were sitting on the steps of the back porch. Juanita walked to the back door, opened it and looked out and saw a rattlesnake in the flower bed about two feet from Marlene’s foot. Juanita kept her 22 mag. pistol on the kitchen cabinet by the door. She picked up the gun, walked out on the porch, never said a word to the kids and shot that snake’s head off. I killed 17 rattlers one year on the ranch. There was a fence post pile not too far from our house. I was loading up some posts one day and killed one under the posts. He was a little over five foot. One day Ms. Jean went cow hunting with us. She was riding her horse ahead of me. Her horse walked right by a four-foot rattler. I killed that one with my cow whip and never got off my horse. I’ve never seen a horse shy away from a snake except in the movies. Moral of the story: Hollywood Drama!
