Contemporary intercultural encounters, however, are more complicated and dynamic in nature since people live in multiple and shifting spaces with accompanying identities while national, cultural, and ideological boundaries are obscured due to the rapid globalization of economy, the accompanying global migration and the recent innovations in global information/communication technologies. Re-conceptualizing the notion of context as conditions for discourse occurrences, this dissertation research aims to explore the social, cultural, ideological and historical dimensions of conversational discourse between participants with multiple and changing identities in an intercultural global context. An ethnographic research was conducted during 2006-2007 in an American non-profit organization founded 50 years ago to foster social and cultural exchanges among female foreign visitors at a prestigious American university in New England, USA. Building on Deborah Tannen’s famous Thanksgiving dinner (Tannen 1983), a 30 minute conversation among a Russian, a German and two Japanese speakers, who participated in the Thanksgiving Program, was tape-recorded and analyzed together with playback interviews and participants’ journals. The study disclosed that participants not only brought ideological and historical elements in the given intercultural communicative context but also started viewing themselves in the mirror of the “Other” and ultimately constructed their “Self” in “Other” with reference to their cultural memories of WWII and their postwar histories. The following contrastive study of three German and three Japanese subjects’ journals and the transcriptions of their interviews with the researcher further confirmed history’s impacts upon intercultural communication research. The result shows the benefits of triangulating the relationship between Japan and Germany with the U.S. from inclusion of a third participant and/or a third perspective in the studied context. Accordingly, it suggests the need for a post-structuralist approach to discourse analysis in our globalized world (Blommaert 2005). Among them, I am especially grateful to two participants of Thanksgiving Dinner Conversation, Bianka and Olga, who were courageous enough to express their honest thoughts and open a new “domain of sayable.” Finally, I would like to thank my family, especially my husband, Yuan, for his uncompromising support at every stage, and my daughter, Aki, who is born in this new age with an intercultural and interethnic background. iv CHAPTER 1 Introduction Overview of the Research Site – University Community, History and Discourse Newtown is a beautiful city located in the New England region of the U.S., whose historical, traditional, cultural and religious connections to Europe date to the colonial era. It is also internationally well known as the home of East Coast University, one of the oldest and most prestigious American universities. The institution is respected for its tradition of attracting and producing numerous figures of state and intellectual authorities, including future and current American presidents, foreign heads of state and preeminent scholars. The university’s reputable name attracts socially and culturally privileged people from both inside and outside of the U.S.; thus, the university community traditionally has a large foreign population of scholars, researchers, and students as well as their families. In order to support these international visitors, the university, like many other prestigious American universities, has a number of organizations aimed at assisting them in their social and cultural adjustment to life in the U.S. The Office for International Students and Scholars, for instance, offers various cultural resources and social activities such as English conversation classes, language exchange programs, social gatherings for international spouses and partners, and so forth. These programs not only serve to help foreigners improve their English language skills, but also provide them with a social setting in which to meet other members of the university community and share information with one another. The city of Newtown similarly offers many social and cultural activities that give foreign visitors opportunities to participate in and integrate into the local community. Both university and local communities openly welcome these international visitors and celebrate their ethnic diversity, in the hope that they will enjoy their stay at the university. The research site, “Organization for World’s Women” (OWW), is one of those aforementioned non-profit organizations, which is specifically aimed at assist female internationals’ “orientation and adjustment to the new community”1. It is composed of welcoming, hospitable and supportive volunteers, both American and foreign, who “not only meet with new members every week to become better acquainted, but also are available at other times to help solve the problems of daily living in a foreign country.” In order to “provide a social setting where new friends are made and new experiences are shared,2” the coordinators organize regular weekly meetings featuring programs with various international and cultural themes, accompanied

What follows in the pages below had its genesis in a research effort to determine what, if anything the Japanese General Staff knew of the Manhattan Project and the threat of atomic weapons, in the years before the detonation of an atomic bomb over Hiroshima in August 1945. That project drew out of an intense research effort into Japan’s weapons of mass destruction programs stretching back more than two decades; a project that remains on-going. Unlike a work of art, this paper is actually the result of an epiphany; a sudden realization that allows a problem, in this case the Japanese atomic energy and weapons program of World War II, to be understood from a different perspective. There is nothing in this paper that is not readily accessible to the general public; no access to secret documents, unreported interviews or hidden diaries only recently discovered. The information used in this paper has been, for the most part, available to researchers for nearly 30 years but only rarely reviewed. The paper that follows is simply a narrative of a realization drawn from intense research into the subject. The discoveries revealed herein are the consequence of a closer reading of that information. Other papers will follow. In October of 1946, a young journalist only recently discharged from the US Army in the drawdown following World War II, wrote an article for the Atlanta Constitution, the premier newspaper of the American south.

    Operation Pastorius WWII Shortly after Adolf Hitler declared war on the United States, just four days after the Japanese bombed Pearl Harbor, he was eager to prove to the United States that it was vulnerable despite its distance from Europe, Hitler ordered a sabotage operation to be mounted against targets inside America. The task fell to the Abwehr (defense) section of the German Military Intelligence Corps headed by Admiral Wilhelm Canaris. The job was right up the Abwehr’s alley. It already had conducted extensive sabotage operations against the Reich‘s European enemies, developing all the necessary tools and techniques and establishing an elaborate sabotage school in the wooded German countryside near Brandenburg. Lieutenant Walter Kappe, 37, a pudgy, bull-necked man, was given command of the mission against America, which he dubbed Operation Pastorius, after an early German settler in America. Kappe was a longtime member of the Nazi party, and he also knew the United States very well, having lived there for 12 years. To find men suitable for his enterprise, Lieutenant Kappe scoured the records of the Ausland Institute, which had financed thousands of German expatriates’ return from America. Kappe selected 12 whom he thought were energetic, capable and loyal to the German cause. Most were blue-collar workers, and all but two had long been members of the party. Four dropped out of the team almost immediately; the rest were organized into two teams of four. George John Dasch, the eldest at 39, was chosen to lead the first team. He was a glib talker with what Kappe thought were American mannerisms.

Rimmey Topeka High School Topeka, KS Page 1 of 1 Introduction Alexander Hamilton famously noted in the Federalist no. 78 “The Judiciary, on the contrary, has no influence over either the sword or the purse; no direction of either of the strength or of the wealth of the society; and can take no active resolution whatever.” However, Hamilton could be no further from the truth. From the first decision in 1793 up to the most recent decision the Supreme Court of the United States has had a profound impact on the Constitution. Precedents created by Supreme Court decisions function as one of the most powerful governmental actions. Jonathan Bailey argues “those in the legal field treat Supreme Court decisions with a near‐religious reverence. They are relatively rare decisions passed down from on high that change the rules for everyone all across the country. They can bring clarity, major changes and new opportunities” (Bailey). For all of the power and awe that comes with the Supreme Court, Americans have little to know accurate knowledge about the land’s highest court. According to a 2015 survey released by the Annenberg Public Policy Center: 32% of Americans could not identify the Supreme Court as one of our three branches of government, 28% believe that Congress has full review over all Supreme Court decisions, and 25% believe the court could be eliminated entirely if it made too few popular decisions. Because so few Americans lack solid understanding of how the Supreme Court operates, now is the perfect time for our students to actively focus on the Supreme Court in their debate rounds.
